Tonight, NBC is throwing a party to celebrate Keith Olbermann's 5th anniversary at "Countdown" — and it just happens to be in CNN's backyard. NBC head honcho Jeff Zucker, NBC News president Steve Capus and NBC News senior VP/MSNBC overseer Phil Griffin are hosting the party at none other than Landmarc in the Time Warner Center — a stone's throw from where former NBC-er and current Olbermann challenger Campbell Brown will be broadcasting live.

A little uptown for this particular gang, given how publicly they all came together in midtown earlier this year in their collective home at 30 Rock, no? Wouldn't it make more sense just to find a spot in midtown within walking distance, so that maybe even former MSNBC GM and now 9 p.m. host Dan Abrams could attend? Well sure — unless you're a perennial third-place network trying to send a message to your nearest competitor, on whom you just happen to have been gaining steadily in recent months. Surely the mass exodus up to Landmarc can't just be the spaghetti carbonara (which is apparently delicious, according to a CNN staffer who's actually eaten there)?

Indeed it is not. "We thought it would be fun to hold Keith's party in the building where the third place 8 p.m. cable news show is produced," said MSNBC spokesperson Jeremy Gaines. Gaines is referring to CNN's "Election Center," which Brown recently took over after returning from maternity leave. In March, "Countdown" beat "Election" center, so Gaines is technically correct — though for the entire first quarter of 2008, "Election Center" was ranked 6th among cable news shows in the 8 p.m. timeslot, where Olbermann ranked 20th. In March, Olbermann averaged 1,080,000 total viewers and and 382,000 viewers in the demo, while Brown averaged 995,000 total viewers and 325,000 in the demo. That number was slightly higher than the average for "Countdown's" quarter (1,033,000), which an MSNBC press release said was Olbermann's best-ever. It should be noted that the numbers for Brown — under 100,000 total viewers behind — represented her first-ever.

The upshot? CNN and MSNBC are duking it out for second place after Fox — which remains the clear leader — taking it to a bare-knuckles fight on a timeslot-per-timeslot basis, in total viewers and in the demo. Olbermann beat Brown, but CNN won 8 p.m. in March overall. CNN won the demo in the first quarter of 2008...but MSNBC and CNN tied in the demo for March. While CNN is still in second place, MSNBC continues to breathe down its neck — and tonight, that breath will be so close it might even waft up to CNN, with the faint smell of spaghetti carbonara.

CNN declined to comment on the matter. But who knows, maybe in 5 years Brown will be celebrating her anniversary at the Rainbow Room.

MSNBC is trying to be Fox on the left and cash in if Obama gets elected.Pure business motives I would say.Wonder what they will do if that doesnt happen?Go back to prison stories and chasing predators?

I thought I was the only one to finally conclude that Olbermann was just another blowhard. I stopped watching him when it became so obvious that he could not pass up one night without hammering Hillary and demanding that she "get out" while plumping up Obama. It got old pretty quick. I am surprised to hear the ratings have climbed because others who I have spoken to have also tuned him out at 8pm and I was sure there would be some ratings decline since that network does not understand they, starting with Joe Blowborough in the morning, Tweetie at 5, Tucker at 6, and KO at 8, were actually belittling the female voters. But I got the feeling that maybe not everything over there is going so well since I noticed, before I made my departure, that Keith no longer segues into Dan's show which follows. My feeling is that KO has gotten a little big in his britches and Dan no longer holds any import. Just a guess. Because in reality I honestly don't care.

Caolas made some interesting points. You on the other hand, did not.

I like Jim Lehr too, but the in-depth coverage means a lot falls by the wayside. CSPAN is great but you have to really keep up with their schedule and plan ahead. Anything beats MSNBC, There is a big empty spot in the market for someone to jump into.

I agree that Olbermann's current slant is obvious, but it is not like he hasnt had a slant all along. The only thing that has changed is that, instead of all O'Reilly-Fox News-Bush-Guiliani-Republican attacks, certain Democrats are now fair game as well. Now that the joke is on Democrats, you can finally see just how bad things really are (Fox is worse, but they're all bad). And i'm saying this as an Obama supporter who is not very fond of Clinton. But the thing is, the Cable "News" coverage is so juvenile, so devoid of actual news (Mugabe and Zimbabwe Election gets no coverage) that its just noise.

If you want actual news, and none of the spinsters, two great sources are PBS Jim Lehr (this is what a News show should be...just facts, and the viewer makes up their mind), and the CSPAN programming.

You are wrong. Olbermann was clearly a fan of Hillary in the beginning but then changed his tune after she started the slime attacks on Obama. I think what put him over the top was Bill Clinton making the Jesse Jackson reference after Obama's win in SC. And all the pro-McCain comments from Hillary and Bill on experience and patriotism really didn't help. Go back to the old blogs and you will see how initially all the Hillary supporters loved Olbermann.

He is a true Democrat - he did not care to see one Democrat throw such low blows at another Democrat while elevating a Republican just to win.

First time I noticed KOs Hillary bashing is when he started co-hosting post debates and primary nights with Matthews. I stopped watching the election returns. What I think is Chris exudes so much poison from his pores that he contaminates those near him. I used to watch David Schuster, starting with his political analysis of the Libby trial and other news stories of the day, and thought he was very good. Then he got a chance to fill in for Tucker. One day while filling in for Tucker, he said to his panel....Chelsea is campaigning for her mother, do you think that is appropriate....and the panel said they thought it was OK. The next day he brought it up again saying Chelsea was calling super delegates, and the panel said it was all right, and David Schuster said, "I don't know, it just seems to me that her parents are PIMPING her. I couldn't believe my ears....as he had been pretty objective in his news analysis. Well, the next day he came on and gave an apology to the Clintons, and then he left the set.......he was suspended for two weeks.
Now he sticks it to the Clintons every chance he gets. KO lost me when made that special comment about Hillary. He looked into the camera and said "Mrs Clinton you must rebuke the comments of G. Ferraro in the strongest way" He is losing some of his audience and respect he once had.

KO deserves MAJOR kudos and our thanks, especially for his "special comments" feature where he can certainly articulate a progressive's point of view.
Our country would have been FAR better served had there been more KO and less CNN, Fox, and even MSNBC's Mathews when "W" stepped on to that aircraft carrier as a photo prop declaring "mission accomplished"!
KO represents the responsible journalism that has been so sorely missing in our national conversation about the issues important to all of us.
Hannity? Beck? Dobbs? O'Reilly? HELL NO!! I Thank G-D for KO!!

Only you and other Republican trolls think Olbermann is a "blowhard."

Sorry, but if you were able to grasp difficult concepts and understand reasoned arguments, you might like Olbermann. Hell, his show is even funny most of the time.

Until you graduate high school, JizM, we won't judge you too harshly.

CNN has too many republican anchors.

Candy Corley - I've seen her on C-Span at attending a republican event
John King - giggled himself to death when Cheney used the f-bomb on the senate floor, he looked like a kid in church with a bad case of the giggles
Campbel Brown - is she still dating Ari Fliesher - the former bush press secretary
Larry King - he's just got to be a republican
Andrea Mitchell - is alan greenspans wife-big, big republican
Lou Dobbs - says he's an independant but I think it's a hoax.
Anerson Cooper - Isn't he Gloria Vanderbilts son - wealth-republican?

when msnbc finally realizes that their core viewers are progressives they will take over cable ratings.

right now fox is ahead because they have the entire racist and bigot viewership all to themselves.

msnbc and cnn spilt the rest..msnbc needs to go entirely with the Keith O type of shows and they will clean up.

only liberals and progressive thinkers like truth.

conservatives and angry white racists like fake fox news,

In order to achieve being no one in cable in any time slot first, they will have to get rid of all of those annoying women during the day. The whole line up makes me wince and those women talk too damn much over the guests. Nora O’Donnell is the only credible host. Why Andrea Mitchell is there, as a host lawd only knows. Then take Gregory (Race 08) off, he’s passed annoying and thinks he’s all that. His ego fills my TV screen. And bring back Tucker. I hated Tucker's views but I loved the fact that he had b*lls right or wrong (mostly wrong) to say what he felt with impunity. (I guess that’s not totally true, his candidness got him fired.) lol

Obama would NEVER do that. BTW- Obama's "supporters" didn't tune in to KO's program on Sunday night.. See for yourself. Nielsen ratings say this:

"Let the smack talking begin: NBC ran a special one hour Countdown with Keith Olbermann and it pulled Quarterlife style numbers (3.37 million) and did even worse in the demo with a 0.5/2. I’d blame that on the basketball overrun except that a rerun of King of the Hill on Fox did about three times as well as KO in the demo. Even a rerun of America’s Next Top Model on the CW had a better 18-49 result than Olbermann. We know from our regular coverage that almost all of Olbermann’s (and O’Reilly’s too) viewers are over the age of 55 on cable, and it would seem NBC was doing their own little Katie Couric experiment to see if it could capture the youth using Keith Olbermann. The verdict is in: nope.

Dateline at 8pm pretty much doubled Countdown in viewers and tripled it in the demo. It will be interesting to see if they try this experiment again, or whether it’s “You: Stay on MSNBC, thanks!”

It's all there at Nielsens. Google is our friend.

Hi, it's the writer! I live in New York. The Time Warner Center is big. You can enter on 59th or you can enter on 60th. As someone who once lived on 60th and Amsterdam, I was well-used to making the argument that technically the Upper West Side started with the park, etc. etc. But anyway, maybe I'm writing from a downtown perspective but 60th and TWC and Lincoln Center and all that feels way more uptown than Rock Center. Just does. Can you walk from 30 Rock to TWC? Sure, but I'd bet that Jeff Zucker didn't. It makes about a zillion times more sense to book something nearby. They booked Landmarc pointedly, and admitted as much. So, there you go.

p.s. Amsterdam starts at 59th - below that it's 10th Ave, like the Springsteen song. But also, that's another indicia of moving from midtown to the UWS. Also, the fries at Landmarc are VERY tasty. And they have free wireless. Woo-hoo!

Am I the only one here who stopped watching Countdown?

Yes, I'm a liberal, and no, I'm not a Clinton supporter, but after a point, watching Olbermann bounce rhetorical questions off Dana Milbank, Howard Fineman, Eugene Robinson (the newbie), Jonathan Alter or Craig Crawford stopped being interesting.

Considering it took Olbermann 5 years to get these kind of ratings (which actually didn't start happening until this year), and Campbell Brown is this close after being on, what, 2 months? Maybe Olbermann & Co. should tone-down the gloating a bit.
