I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Karl Rove

Now that Karl Rove's retired from the Bush White House and bent on rebranding himself as a media personality, the rest of us get to more fully appreciate the weird way in which his mind works. Last week, in an interview with Greta Van Susteren, we got a fulsome look at the Rove value system. His "advice" to Barack Obama? Traffic in rank insincerities, and call it "gutsy." Somehow, we always figured.

In a wide ranging interview with GQ, readers can come to appreciate another one of the traits that has served Rove in good stead as he's led a President through two-terms of catastrophic ideas that have resulted in horrific approval ratings and his party's defeat in both houses of Congress: his glorious lack of self-awareness. This is on glittering display as he discusses the two Democratic contenders.

What do you make of this whole thing where Hillary was talking Obama up as a vice president and he came back saying, "Wait a minute, I'm winning--why are you asking me to be your number two?"

Very calculating on the part of the Clintons, and a mistake for him on his part.

Why?

Because they wanted him to get down to their level. They want him to look like, you know, not the golden inspiring figure but instead, you know, like an average ordinary pol who's got three years in the United States Senate. So they lay it out there. And rather than having it be dismissed by a surrogate, instead he goes out there! And rather than having an inspiring, forward-looking message, instead he's out there as an ordinary pol saying, "Hey, I'm number one, I'm in first place! I won more states than she did. I won more delegates than she did. What the hell's she doing offering it to me? That's insulting." And he did it in an arrogant way that I don't think made him look that good."

So you don't think his response played well?

No. Take a look at the footage. Turn the sound off and look at it. You can tell that he is arrogant, and you can tell that he's a little bit angry, and you can tell he's very dismissive. He takes his hands and he sort of, you know, waves his hand like, "I'm dismissing something." That was the moment to say, you know, "Look, I know what my opponents are saying, but you know what? I'm focused on one thing and one thing only, which is to help bring Republicans and Democrats and independents together to move America forward." Instead of "Hey, lemme just remind you, I'm winning! I'm beatin' her!"

Rove calling Obama "arrogant?" That's pretty rich coming from a guy who, just a few days ago, took a nice chunk of money from an appearance at the University of Iowa, during which he scolded the attendees, "You got a chance to ask your questions later and make your stupid statements, let me make mine," and mawkishly clutched at his own heartstrings over Iraq: "I shed a lot of tears and I have been inspired by many of the people who feel their son or daughter should not have to die in vain."

But if you dare risk your eyeballs permanently rolling back into your head, here's what Rove had to say about Hillary Clinton:

You've said--what was the phrase you used about Hillary? "Fatally flawed"?

Fatally flawed. I just thought her flaws would show up in the general election. I didn't know they'd show up as early and as strong as they have.

Which flaws?

Uh, calculating. You know, she went through the period where she had the calculated laugh, she went through the period where she had the calculated accents, and you build that on top of a person who already has the reputation that anything she says is calculating, you know....

Is calculating a terrible thing?

It is if people think it's phony. And that's what her problem is. That and the sense of entitlement.

And so, the eternal dialectic betwixt pot and kettle in re blackness continues. At least the interviewer had the good sense to not let that one slide.

There is something ironic about Karl Rove criticizing someone for being calculating.

Right. Look, it's one thing to calculate and say, "What's the best way for me to do this?" It's another thing to say, "What's the best way to do this, even if it means the sacrifice of my fundamental principles?"

And with that, we recommend you click on over to the Huffington Post's "Living" vertical, where you might find tips on how to clean a copious amount of vomit out of your computer's keyboard.

_______________

RELATED: Later in the interview, Rove offers up some juicy opinion that he did not deem fit for reader consumption:

I get the sense you respect Hillary more than you respect Obama.

Off the record?

Please don't go off the record.

Off the record... [Yeah, it's good. Sorry.]

Damn! Now say that on the record.

No. Nope. Nope. Nope.

Let's try again, then: on the record. I get the sense you respect her more than him.

Uh, I know her better than I know him. And I just, uh--she has been around public life a lot longer and has demonstrated, you know, more involvement than he has.

Now that Karl Rove's retired from the Bush White House and bent on rebranding himself as a media personality, the rest of us get to more fully appreciate the weird way in which his mind works. Last w...

Who cares what Karl Rove thinks about anyone or anything? I'll give the guy some credit for having gotten Bush elected. But Rove himself and the rest of the media seems to act like he's a "wunderkind" or something. His track record isn't that great. Please note the following:
(1) Bush barely won the 2000 election / Supreme Court gave Bush Florida.
(2) Based on past elections, voters generally want to retain the Commander-in-Chief during a war, and so they tend to vote for the incumbent. I think this was the major factor in Bush's 2004 victory. Not Karl Rove. (LBJ didn't run for re-election. Although Nixon ran on having a "secret plan" to get us out of Vietnam in 1968, we were still in Vietnam in 1972 and Nixon was re-elected by a landslide. )
(3) Karl Rove believed that the Republicans would continue to dominate Congress for the next 50 years. (WRONG!)
(4) in the 2006 Congressional elections, Karl Rove believed that the Republicans would loose only a few seats in the House and retain the Senate. In fact, he was quite shocked that the Republicans lost so many seats. So he's obviously not a great prognosticator. So again, who cares what Karl Rove thinks???

No matter how much one hates Rove, what he said made sense. Obama should have had staff handle the VP question instead of himself. Obama does have a vulnerability to an "arrogant" attack. And Hillary IS calculating, and everyone knows it.

What Rove does well is point out stuff which is incredibly obvious after he points it out.

"Arrogant and calculating."
This is what the psychiatrists call projection. When you have a certain quality that you cannot accept, about yourself, you "see" it in others and attack it there...out there in the world.
Trouble is that this particular defense mechanism does not allow much personal insight. It is a very primitive
George Bush is even sicker than TurdBlossom. For the past eight years the country has been run by men that really need 17 years of intensive psychtherapy .
No wonder the US is in such horrible shape. The war, the dead soldiers, the dead Iraqis, the economy, waning world opinion, Katrina, cronyism, lies, spin, illegal wire taps, torture, rendition and general disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, international treaties, too.
Who out there voted for this bunch of bullies and sickos? Shame on you!

Great post, Angel!

Seems to me that no one on Earth should be asking Karl Rove for his opinion on Anything!! Don't we already know that no one should WANT to know what drives a Social Deviant of his magnitude! The sooner this cretin is forgotten by humanity, the sooner we can all get back to work to TRY to redeem the future for SOME of us poor bastards!

Karl Rove is 'calculating' every step of how he destroy Hillary Clinton in the general election. Barf! If anyone is calculating, it's him! He has no moral compass and believes only in achieving American Empire at all costs, even if it's your son or daughters life. As the turdblossom get's pulled from it's roots, he's squirming and his words are very transparent.

The ol' Rovian style is not as powerful as it once was and damn is it starting to feel good. He knows well enough that his neo-conservative crap ain't going to fly after Bush gives both House and Senate as well as the Presidency to the Democratic Party. He wants Hillary Clinton and we're not going to let him have it. The Republicans and Old Man McCain will lose the White House and the legislature. We will be dancing in the streets all over the world.

Karl Rove is a war criminal and should be prosecuted at the Hague!

ANALYZING ROVE

"Arrogant" is racial code for an "Uppity Negro" or one who doesn't know his place so to speak.

Historically, to publicly call out an accomplished Black man as "arrogant" has been code to authorize all and any measures necessary to bring him down to size.

It's applied more so to Black men than women. The thought of an accomplished Black man in any sport or professional endeavor, particularly in which he is excelling, who is not deferential like Jackie Robinson, but excessively boastful like a Muhammad Ali, strikes a chord with certain racist tendencies in some people who harbor resentment toward high-profile Black achievement. Like with Ali or Tiger (among the other golfers for sure) they want to see him defeated.

It's a rallying call to stop this guy before he gets too full of himself; and is analagous to Bill Clinton's recurring charge beginning in NH that Obama had a FREE RIDE which has been replaced recently with the charge Obama wants to disenfranchise DEMS, both of which speak to peoples' sense of fair play.

Consider Rove's comment, just like we took Bill Clinton's "Fairy Tale" rant with his "GIVE ME A BREAK" crescendo in NH as a "Call To Arms" for the like-minded and a Declaration of War. I'm afraid Karl Rove and his ilk have pivoted from Clinton and are preparing to really BRING IT to Obama. Like our candidate, I will just trust the voters that they won't be distracted this time.

Everything is code now, huh? Nobody can say anything about Obama, without being called a racist. It's pretty sad actually. Listen Obama does come off as arrogant sometimes, I have freinds who are huge supporters but even they admit it. It's a actually a trait that most politicians have, some call it cockiness etc. It's not that bad of a thing to be called, you don't get very far in life by being passive or feeble. Most alphas have the traits, it doesn't have to be about race all the time.

The skills of Carl Rove are undeniable. As helpful as he was in advancing the Bush policies for the American people, let me ask a few questions:
1) How many americans, regular folks, became successful under the Bush Adm?; Received tax breaks, or managed to make investments in stocks?
2). How many americans have seen their communities flourish; business grow, new industry moving into the communities; employment opportunities in abundance, or are most people living from paychack to paycheck, or barely getting by financially.
I live in PA. am I am convinced that people should have more opportunities at their disposal. I am not a young adult in college who is idealistic, and believes in change, although I use to be one. I am an middle age adult who is just a little tired a watching the same folks in politics do the same things with the same results, and nothing much changes for the regular people. I realize most people are comfortable with what is familiar, mainly, because it is safe. We often vote for the lesser of 2 evils, or are fortunate to actually have an opportunity to nominate a candidate we like. I already know what I will get with the familiar, I really need change this year. 4 more years of the continued division will only be toxic of me , for us. As Americans, we desire better.

But who cares we all know you outed a CIA agent for political purposes had Scoooter cover up and lie about it and here you are thinking you are relevent. Karl why not do us all a favor and go away, BTW who would stick around with someone that refers to a person as TURD BLOSSOM do you have any self esteem?

How many crimes have been committed to make this man feel in authority to call anyone, especially Obama, arrogant? I listened to this man speak on Cspan last week. He appeared to be confused as to where and why he was speaking. He was roasting folks, galore, and being blatantly negative and ugly. Was he angry? Is he on something? He appeared to me to be totally aloof by rattling on and on and on negatively about folks. I find it hard to accept his judgement about folks as being credble. A calculating person does not befit hil, and Obama does not appear to be arrogant. I didn't like the child's play alluded to when Clintons insinuated that she wanted Obama be HER vp? What a play and what a tease. Was this a hint that she needs someone of Obama's calibre to MAN the W H while she catches up with Bil? Anyway, They contradicted their very own lie when she told that Obama was inexperienced. This is not calculating. This is trying to be funny at her own experience/expense. KR will be out to set up and usingnegative Media on Dems to keep Bush and McC alive

At least he's not ARROGANT and STUPID like his former boss: George! We know what a dangerous combination that can be. Besides Karl Rove needs to take that one piece of hair he has in the center of his head shut up and ride off into the sunset somewhere, they've done enough damage to AMERICA!
