Leno And Clinton

Hillary Clinton hit the humor trail Thursday night by dropping in on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. Though she didn't attempt to go joke-for-joke with Leno by dishing out one-liners like McCain and Letterman, Clinton did attempt to score with her own brand of funny. Entering to none other than the theme from "Rocky," Clinton quickly jumped into a gag about her recent historical embellishments: "I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," she quipped before briefly discussing her 'lapse' with regards to her Bosnia memories. Leno, for his part, dropped in a joke about answering the phone at 3 a.m. before the conversation moved on to the election, Bill's temper, and Florida delegates.

Watch the clip.

More from AP:

Clinton said she was proud of her daughter, Chelsea, 28, who has been campaigning for her. But she said her "stomach is in knots" most days thinking about what she might encounter each day. Chelsea Clinton has fielded some tough questions in recent appearances, particularly about her father's relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Her response has been that it's none of the questioner's business.

Asked about her daughter telling a voter that her mother might make a better president than her father, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton grinned and said: "She is such a smart young woman."

Leno also asked about moments during the campaign in which the former president has blown up at reporters and others.

"When you're supporting someone you love, you really do take it very much to heart," she said. "I said 'OK, honey, that's all right, we don't have to go get excited about it.' He's doing a great job for me but he does get a little carried away sometimes."

I think it's insulting to members of the armed forces that Clinton first makes up accounts of sniper fire and then jokes about it. Being subject to sniper attack is no joke! I'm disturbed, not only by Clinton's lies, but by her tendency to say things that are so dismissive of others. First there was staying home to bake cookies, then there was the backwardness of states like Mississippi, now there are jokes about sniper fire. And how many war zones did she visit? Is she suggesting here that she confused Bosnia with some other war zone? I'm willing to bet that Clinton was never under sniper fire anywhere!

It is extremely inappropriate to make jokes about a situation that involved genocide in Bosnia. Hillary made up a story about her experience on foreign policy and confirmed what many voters already believed. She has a strained relationship with the truth. This is not a topic of amusement.

It's bad enough to lie about such things, but even more insulting to go on Leno's show and laugh about it. So she thinks lying is funny? So she thinks what our military men encounter in war zones is a joke? I can't think of any branch of the service that would laugh.

Insulting the Military was the first thing that struck me. Remember the skit Bush did at the Correpondent's Dinner -- about the missing weapons? I think both McCain and Clinton are running for Bush's 3rd term.

Hillary Clinton is not a dope. She could not have possibly thought that she could make up a story about Bosnia and sniper fire and not get busted. The only intelligent conclusion is that she was confusing two different events. Did she ever have to run to a limo after getting off a plane, fearful of snipers? I am betting that she did.

If you read the news reports from the time, they all mention the possibility of sniper fire, how Clinton was the only first lady other than Eleanor Roosevelt to fly into war zones, and how she was covered by sharpshooters on the tarmac in Bosnia. I have no doubt TPTB told her at the time that there might be sniper fire -- the NY Times reported it -- but she should have said "I remember flying in under the threat of sniper fire." That's how she spoke of it to the press THEN. It would have avoided all of this. Some people have compulsion to embellish things. It's a really terrible habit of all politicians to some degree. (Paging "Professor" Obama, the feirce attorney who managed never to try an actual case...) I support HIllary, but I dislike this aspect of her character, and of politicians in general. I don't think her show on Leno will change the minds of any of those who don't already support her, but it's nice to see her trying to be more approachable.

BigMitch, I agree. She was probably informed of possible sniper fire. But it does no good to defend her on Obamington Post.

Of course, Mitch. I'm glad she got a chance to make light of it. It's been downright silly to see the intensity of the talk about this. I guess it's part of being such an interesting year for the Dems that everything they do is under the microscope.

Now, Obama should go on TV and smoke a cig. *haha

It makes me happy to see an elderly woman such as yourself laugh without peeing herself...ohhh spoke to soon.

I guess that's why Hillary's taken so many campaign contributions from the Depend's percentage of out population.

The Clinton brand has been severely tarnished! Has been rolled over by the (dare I say it?) OBAMA brand! OK, I didn't mean to make you Clintonites mad. I used to love Bill Clinton. I am now at a point where I don't even want to see them. So badly have they behaved during the course of this election cycle.

As a military spouse, I am really turned off by this nonsense. I think it is in poor taste for Hillary to not only lie, but joke about it, while we have men and women in uniform fighting now.

I will not vote for Clinton. How will she be an effective leader for our military?

Oh please. Get over yourself.

Hillary is the one who will get your boys out of this 100-year John McCain-supporting war.

Yeah, just like she was the one to keep them from going there in the first place! Whoops, I forgot, she voted FOR the war without reading the NIE, and was one of the LAST senators to come out against it when the polls told her it was safe to do so. Nope, I'm sorry, you're WRONG! Obama will get us out, I DON'T TRUST HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry but I agree with cam737. Maybe you have never had a family member serve in the military but for those of us who do, it's not very funny. A number of my family members have served or a currently serving and have had their lives in danger. Someone pretending to have had the experience is just not right. What's worse is that story she made up about having tried to join the Marines is even worse.

situationcritical -
Have you ever wondered why so many disallusioned republicans are voting for Barack Obama? It's because they're smart enough to know that he is the ONLY solution to our Iraq problem. You're clueless if you think that billions of dollars going over there has been building just schools and libraries. GWB and his cronies have laid the groundwork for a 100 year occupation. I really don't see Hillary changing their plans - probably Bill already has his hands into business deals over there. You need to do some serious research and learn to distinguish the truth from fiction. The one who screams loudest doesn't always tell the truth. The fighter you support has a more devious plan for your future.

I agree, cam737. It IS offensive. HRC thinks it's okay to vote to send other people's kids to die or get maimed in Iraq, but Little Chelsea should not asked any "uncomfortable" questions.

Hillary Clinton is the one who needs to "get over" herself.

Honestly, I cannot stand HRC at this moment. I am an Obama Mama all the way. I live in Texas and I am so proud of the fact that he WON here! BUT, here is where I differ from HRC supporters: I will vote for HER if Obama is not the Dem nominee! I am getting so sick of reading that HRC supporters will not support Obama. Is this a bunch of BS?? Are they just trying to scare us in to voting for HRC?? Why on earth would a person supporting HRC who basically has the same political views as Obama, but in the GE vote for McCain who is TOTALLY on the other end of the spectrum as Obama and Clinton??

Please could a Clinton supporter please tell me why you would not vote for Obama, who basically believes the same things your candidate believes in, and turn around and vote for McCain who wants to stay in the war for 100 years??? PLEASE TELL ME WHY????

Katerose: I will tell you why I won't vote for Obama. Here are my reasons:

He isn't qualified, never was more qualified than Hillary or even Edwards.

He is phony and arrogant, just like his supporters.

His supporters are a bunch of hateful, slur mongering, clueless people, who are consumed with their hatred of the Clintons, that it is bordering on insanity.

His campaign played the race card repeatedly and then said Bill and Hillary played the race card.

With all of the talk of change in the campaign, Obama has proved over and over he is nothing more than a Washington politician, just as hypocritical, and not even that intelligent.

The media has given Obama a free pass from day one and have incessantly trashed Hillary and BIll over and over.

Obama has no record to speak of, and yet he thinks he can criticize Hillary's voting record.

Even with all of these reasons, I will still not vote for McCain, but I won't vote for OBama either. I will probably write Hillary's name in, maybe with Bill.
