Hillary Clinton With Jay Leno On Tonight Show: Enters To "Rocky" Theme, Jokes About Sniper Fire

Hillary Clinton hit the humor trail Thursday night by dropping in on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. Though she didn't attempt to go joke-for-joke with Leno by dishing out one-liners like McCain and Letterman, Clinton did attempt to score with her own brand of funny. Entering to none other than the theme from "Rocky," Clinton quickly jumped into a gag about her recent historical embellishments: "I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," she quipped before briefly discussing her 'lapse' with regards to her Bosnia memories. Leno, for his part, dropped in a joke about answering the phone at 3 a.m. before the conversation moved on to the election, Bill's temper, and Florida delegates.

Clinton said she was proud of her daughter, Chelsea, 28, who has been campaigning for her. But she said her "stomach is in knots" most days thinking about what she might encounter each day. Chelsea Clinton has fielded some tough questions in recent appearances, particularly about her father's relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Her response has been that it's none of the questioner's business.

Asked about her daughter telling a voter that her mother might make a better president than her father, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton grinned and said: "She is such a smart young woman."

Leno also asked about moments during the campaign in which the former president has blown up at reporters and others.

"When you're supporting someone you love, you really do take it very much to heart," she said. "I said 'OK, honey, that's all right, we don't have to go get excited about it.' He's doing a great job for me but he does get a little carried away sometimes."

Hillary recently misspoke about her trip to Bosnia. She accurately describes the trip in her book, Living History:

'Due to reports of snipers in the hills around the airstrip, we were forced to cut short an event on the tarmac…' "Security conditions were constantly changing in the former Yugoslavia, and they had recently deteriorated again. Due to reports of snipers in the hills around the airstrip, we were forced to cut short an event on the tarmac with local children, though we did have time to meet them and their teachers and to learn how hard they had worked during the war to continue classes in any safe spot they could find. … We were then off to the fortified American base at Tuzla, where over two thousand American, Russian, Canadian, British, and Polish soldiers were encamped in a large tent city." No, actually according to the pilot who flew that plane, not even Senator Clinton's book contained an accurate description. I might also add that Senator Clinton made this particular misstatement using almost precisely the same words on 3 separate occasions, once in December 2007, once in February 2007 and the most recent one that caused this since Andrea Mitchell heard it who was on that plane and did not hear any warning about snipers, or sniper fire. The war in Bosnia had also been over for 2 months and the military assigned to protect the First Lady and the First Daughter had cleared the area of anybody they deemed remotely hostile (as they always do).

I believe the best thing Senator Clinton could do now is apologize for this. I don't believe that defending her, or attempting to make this misstatement somehow reality, will be effective.

This attempt at backpedaling is truly disturbing. She simply lied about her account in Bazra on more than one occasion and got caught in the lie. And for her to go on Jay Leno and joke about the lie in that fashion, as if it is no big deal, is disturbing. She's looking more and more like a typical Republican. Most of all, she is DESPERATE!

Concerning Chelsea Clinton and the Monica Questions:
If I had the opportunity, I would ask Hillary the same questions Chelsea is receiving about Monica Lewinsky. It has as much to do with Hillary's candidacy as Rev. Wright has to do with Barack Obama. So, let's make a pact, anywhere Bill, Hill, or poor little Chelsea venture forth on the campaign, please bring up the Lewinsky Affair. Why? The question's implications Go to judgement, go to honesty, go to Hillary's qualifications as commander in chief. Question Two, Three and Four for Any of the Trio: What is so secret about the meetings? What is so secret about the conversations Hillary had in the White House? What is so difficult and secret about the tax returns?

I disagree about asking Senator Clinton about Monica Lewinsky. I don't think any of that was ever any of our business. Now, it is absolutely fair game to ask for Senator Clinton's missing White House records. Since Senator Clinton is claiming experience, she should back that up with documentation. As for asking about her tax returns from 2000-2007, this is absolutely fair game. Also, I would ask about the donors to the Clinton Presidential Library. I would ask about those pardons. After the last 7+ years of extreme, excessive secrecy, it is up to us to demand transparency from all of our candidates, even if their surname is Clinton.

Also, it is fair game to ask Senator Clinton why in the heck she sat down with Richard Mellon Scaiffe. It is fair game to ask Senator Clinton why she gave Richard Mellon Scaiffe legitimacy with that sit-down. Mr. Scaiffe is the vast-right wing conspiracy to which Senator Clinton referred all of those years ago. Mr. Scaiffe tried to destroy Senator Clinton's entire family and bring about a coup d'etat in the Executive Branch of the United States. Why does she sit down with Mr. Scaiffe-- is she hoping to turn that man's vitriol on Senator Obama? These are absolutely fair questions.

However, I don't think Monica Lewinsky was ever our business. In my opinion, that particular issue has always been a private matter between Mr. and Mrs. Clinton.

But, I wasn't this angry about this whole Bosnia thing until I watched Senator Clinton on Jay Leno. Our men and women have been shot dead by snipers. Our men and women have been severely injured by snipers. I don't believe any of this is at all funny. I am not laughing, are you?

I think I begin to understand why those I know how have been in combat are so angry about all of this.
Senator Clinton should either a) stop talking about this, or b) (and preferably) apologize now.

My brother is an ex-marine corpsman and is angry as hell at this. He tells me that if pols are actually flown into a hostile situation that soldiers clear a perimeter (based on the reach of weapons fire) and that the pols go directly from the aircraft to an armored personnel carrier.

Unless you are in constant fire fight you remember being fired upon. In my military career i ended up in sniper action a few times and i vividly remember everything like it was chiseled in my brain. This happened over 20 years ago. For Hillary to be joking about her lie brings to mind how Bush walked around the Oval Office joking about his lie on WMDs.

Governor John Connally was shot in Dallas. He always maintained that he clearly remembered what happened. His memory differs from the events as recorded in the Zapruder film. Multiple witnesses to the events in Dallas remember the assassination vividly and yet disagree with each other. Human memory is simply not reliable. Eye witnesses (even in cases involving gunshots) are notoriously unreliable. I am not saying Clinton didn't lie, only that there are plausible alternate explanations.
