Hagel

The Republican Party and its presumptive nominee Sen. John McCain are heading into a 2008 electoral buzzsaw with their continued support of the Iraq war, Sen. Chuck Hagel said in an interview with The Huffington Post on Thursday.

The country is still very sour on the war, the Nebraska Republican pressed, and support for candidates who want to stay the course is simply not there.

"I am concerned about the [party still holding on to Iraq as an issue]," said Hagel. "If for no other reason than the political factors here are quite obvious. This country has made a decision on Iraq, and as you see now in any poll, even a minimum of 25 percent of the registered Republicans cannot support the president's policy in Iraq. You take that with the independents and Democrats and you have anywhere between 60 and 70 percent who want out. So you can't politically sustain this and any party that uses this as an issue when they are going in the face of where America is, is not going to do very well politically. That is just the facts of life."

Hagel, who is retiring from the Senate, has not yet endorsed a candidate for the White House. While he considers McCain a friend, there is a vast gulf between the two on Iraq. But Hagel also has sharp disagreements with the troop withdrawal plans of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, which he views as overly rigid and hasty.

During a Wednesday event promoting his new book, "America: Our Next Chapter", Hagel was asked which candidate's "world vision" he most agreed with, Hagel evaded the question. "Nice try," he said, smiling. "How about this, I'll sign your book."

On Thursday, however, the Senator did show some awe and appreciation for Obama. Responding to news that the Illinois Democrat had raised more than $40 million in March (following $55 million in February), Hagel called him a "strong messenger," and even offered up a historical analogy to John Kennedy.

"It is a phenomenon," he said of Obama's fundraising. "It is something that I have never seen and I don't know if anybody else has ever seen it. It is unprecedented if you just look at the numbers. And what I think is astounding, not just the bottom line number in the short amount of time, but the average per contribution, and that is significant as well because it is so small... When you look at the next generation that Obama has broken into like nothing since John Kennedy... So his people have been very, very smart in how they use the Internet, and they obviously have a very strong messenger with a strong message."

As he approaches his leave from the Senate, Hagel has found himself increasingly at odds with his political party. On the issue of Iraq, he has been one of the fiercest critics of the Bush administration. And such a streak of independence had made the Nebraskan the center of talk about a potential third party run. That, however, has died down. But discussion over him teaming up with McCain or Obama has remained rampant.

And yet, any political partnership with McCain will have to be done over vast disagreements on the war. The two not only differ on the purpose and benefits of the war, but McCain has also yet to sign on to a revamped a version of the G.I. Bill, which Hagel and Sen. Jim Webb have vigorously endorsed.

"We have talked to John," Hagel said of the measure, which would remove the buy-in cost for veterans to receive greater education benefits. "John as you know has been involved on other pursuits. He has taken a close look at it, his people are. Both Webb and I had hoped he would get on it. Obviously Obama is on it and Clinton, three out of four Vietnam veterans in the Senate are on it, people like John Warner and James Inhofe are on it. So, obviously each Senator has to make his own decision on this thing. But we are going to continue to help educate McCain's staff and we hope he becomes part of it."

McCain: "I offer a bridge to the 11th Century. No other candidate offers a chance to re-fight the Crusades."

The GOP is in trouble. Hagel and many of the Repubs don't like McCain and don't like this war. It is becoming increasingly difficult for GOP Congressional candidates to support the war. McCain will not provide any coat-tails for these candidates to ride. McCain is a weak conservative that will not GOTV of the strong conservative base that helped Bush twice. On top of that, Bob Barr (former GOP) is set to announce his Libertarian bid for President on Saturday. At first it seems silly but his candidacy may skim 2-3% or more from McCain's total.

I don't see how can anyone support McCain. He is exactly like Bush, just older and more senile. Same foreign policy, doesn't care about anyone but the elite 1%, never supported any bill for children's health, has missed the most votes in the Senate except for Tim Johnson who suffered a brain hemorrhage, does not support the GI Bill for veterans, has the most lobbyists working for him (66), has an uncontrollable temper, cannot tell al-Qaeda from Shiite extremists, endorsed by a radical fake preacher who hates Catholics and gays, and most importantly starts off every sentence with "My friends...". If he is elected, more soldiers will die while he sings (very badly) Beach Boys songs. Bush part 3. ...NO YOU CAN'T...NO YOU CAN'T...NO YOU CAN'T!

After the Dems sort out their candidate, the honeymoon will be over for McCain and the American voters will see what they see: an old man totally out of touch with America. Imagine a debate between Obama and McCain.....

You are right - now McSane can wander the world making asinine statements and pretending to give a shit . . . soon the Bull Shit Express will run into the Wall Of Reality.

No mater who the Dem's put up, Mr "100 More-Years Sunni-Shiite-who?" will have to explain why 30 years in the Senate, he has produced NOTHING for Vets, Justice, Economy, Health or Welfare for the Working Middle Class.

Hagel makes his point here and it is a logical one, but one thing must be added; GW Bush is not Republican, he is facist. His government is a right wing dictatorship and that is not an emotional exageration. But please understand, because of all those weak spined Senators in the congress, every single last one of them, Repub and Dem, GW Bush has succeeded in his plan to get away with the stab wounds he has placed into the heart of democracy. They all just let it happen. Now, go play some more golf, you great "patriots".

George W. Bush, at present, is the true face of republican.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:17 PM on 04/03/2008

Hmmm.... at least the Democrats have tried (always unsuccessfully) to oppose him.

The Republicans have uniformly come to his aid and defense.

Seems the Republicans really do have to accept responsibility for the last 8 years. If you want to call them facists, that's fine, but that's still the entire Republican party - not just George.

Hemingway wrote "The Old Man and the Sea". If McCain gets to be President, some future historian can write "The Old Man and the Insurgency". It will start out with McCain battling insurgency in Vietnam. Then he will be in the Senate, passionately defending the conquest of Iraq, but of course not seeing it as such, but rather, as a continuation of the battle against insurgency that he knew from old. Finally as President, the battle becomes an utterly incoherent flailing out against "bad guys" in general. The economy, the environment, the government, and the culture all get driven to the point of scorched ruin, and still the old man fights on and on and on, in search of a victory never defined, let alone achieved, yet always theoretically possible should sufficient force be applied.

You just wrote the definition of the Old War Horse Hell. I know WE American's don't want any part of his folley. Someone just buy McBush a '66 Ford mustang convertable, or 64 corvette convertable, with Wolf Man Jack blasting away on the AM radio, and let him live in his fantasy world of a time warp, and leave us the hell alone.

I respect Chuck Hagel for his stance on this. He has said it for quite some time. I think Obama should talk to people like Senator Hagel and get his input and advice. We really need to fix this mess, and it will take both sides of the aisle.

Obama tries to talk to people like that but he is not given the opportunity because he has to keep answering questions about Reverend Wright. The media want to keep the story going because it's all they have. They see the writing on the wall. Obama has 1,300,000 supporters all who have contributed $100 or less. This is daunting for the puglies. McCain is raising no money and his party is not behind him. The rethug, repigs see the writing on the wall. The Wright issue is dead and the longer it takes for us to have our Nominee, the better because it will give the puglies less time to try to destroy him. Other than the 32% of racists in this country who would not vote for him in any event, we will clean the slate with McCain. Buy the man a supply of depends and send him off to Arizona to bake in the sun.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the ONLY ISSUE where Hagel departs from GOP orthodoxy is on continuing the Iraq debacle. He voted FOR authorizing Dubya to go to war. He voted FOR oil drilling in the ANWR. He is stridently ANTI-CHOICE on the abortion issue. He votes AGAINST workers and FOR corporations.

Too many users of this site assume that because a Republican agrees with them on the Iraq issue that he/she is an independent thinker. The only GOP'er of recent vintage like that is Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. Er, make that EX-SENATOR Lincoln Chafee. He lost his re-election bid in '06 to a fine Democrat named Sheldon Whitehouse.

Yes, Hagel is no friend. It is amazing how little posters know about their leaders in Congress. Simple fact of Hagel's character seems to be unknown to these posters hailing him as VP for Obama. What a bunch if ignorant idiots. Then again, Americans are generally stupid. How else do you explain these two words: President Bush.

What George Bush and Dick Cheney have done to this country in the last 8 years is criminal. You can blame republicans yes, especially those that ignore the people and support a pro-war candidate but democrats were specifically elected to start taking care of the Bush/Cheney bullsh**t ....I'm still waiting on that one meanwhile Cheney's back from poking at Iran.

Stop seeing everything as my side or your side and be appreciative when any polititian risks stepping on toes to say what needs to be said. I appreciate Senator Hagel making this point. Yeah, that's right the american people want out of Iraq.....why is the GOP offering us this? I believe the conspiracy about the republicans not really wanting to win because they intend to blame the next democrat for the Bush/Cheney clusterf**k.

If McCain becomes president, the entire world has the right to think us all INSANE. Or just living with rigged elections. I hope we are not all insane for McCain.

Hagel is going to join the herd of traditional conservative and moderate Republicans being pushed out of their own party, rather than kiss the ring of the neocons and the likes of cult leaders like John Hagee and James Dobson. I have life long Republican friends who are in the same position, they are educated and do not drink the kool-aid that the Bush administration has been passing out for the last 8 years. They are not religious zealots and are live and let live civil libertarians. My lifetime Republican sister-in-law has already jumped the GOP ship. I have another friend, a self employed engineer, abandon the GOP over the stem cell and healthcare issues, his 26 daughter has been suffering from a rare form of bone cancer, which could be treated with a break though in stem cell research. He is also getting hammered with medical bills that his insurance company is not picking up. Abortion and gays are just not his issues. When self-preservation is at stake, there are smart conservatives who can figure out that they have been getting had for the last 8 years. The Republican Party has been taken over by the Bible belt zealots and the neo-conservative internationalist new left.

It could all change Sunday if we bomb bomb bomb Iran, eh? Or not. The question will be are there enough Americans fed up with their rulers to run them out of town (to the Hague) for pulling such an idiotic stunt, or will they stand by their run amok "leaders" as the instructors, I mean pundits, commentators, and bloviators, on the radio and Tee Vee will tell them to?

The support for the continued Iraq War is not there by the majority of Republicans and Democrats. The continued support for this war will bankrupt out nation.
