Hagel

The Republican Party and its presumptive nominee Sen. John McCain are heading into a 2008 electoral buzzsaw with their continued support of the Iraq war, Sen. Chuck Hagel said in an interview with The Huffington Post on Thursday.

The country is still very sour on the war, the Nebraska Republican pressed, and support for candidates who want to stay the course is simply not there.

"I am concerned about the [party still holding on to Iraq as an issue]," said Hagel. "If for no other reason than the political factors here are quite obvious. This country has made a decision on Iraq, and as you see now in any poll, even a minimum of 25 percent of the registered Republicans cannot support the president's policy in Iraq. You take that with the independents and Democrats and you have anywhere between 60 and 70 percent who want out. So you can't politically sustain this and any party that uses this as an issue when they are going in the face of where America is, is not going to do very well politically. That is just the facts of life."

Hagel, who is retiring from the Senate, has not yet endorsed a candidate for the White House. While he considers McCain a friend, there is a vast gulf between the two on Iraq. But Hagel also has sharp disagreements with the troop withdrawal plans of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, which he views as overly rigid and hasty.

During a Wednesday event promoting his new book, "America: Our Next Chapter", Hagel was asked which candidate's "world vision" he most agreed with, Hagel evaded the question. "Nice try," he said, smiling. "How about this, I'll sign your book."

On Thursday, however, the Senator did show some awe and appreciation for Obama. Responding to news that the Illinois Democrat had raised more than $40 million in March (following $55 million in February), Hagel called him a "strong messenger," and even offered up a historical analogy to John Kennedy.

"It is a phenomenon," he said of Obama's fundraising. "It is something that I have never seen and I don't know if anybody else has ever seen it. It is unprecedented if you just look at the numbers. And what I think is astounding, not just the bottom line number in the short amount of time, but the average per contribution, and that is significant as well because it is so small... When you look at the next generation that Obama has broken into like nothing since John Kennedy... So his people have been very, very smart in how they use the Internet, and they obviously have a very strong messenger with a strong message."

As he approaches his leave from the Senate, Hagel has found himself increasingly at odds with his political party. On the issue of Iraq, he has been one of the fiercest critics of the Bush administration. And such a streak of independence had made the Nebraskan the center of talk about a potential third party run. That, however, has died down. But discussion over him teaming up with McCain or Obama has remained rampant.

And yet, any political partnership with McCain will have to be done over vast disagreements on the war. The two not only differ on the purpose and benefits of the war, but McCain has also yet to sign on to a revamped a version of the G.I. Bill, which Hagel and Sen. Jim Webb have vigorously endorsed.

"We have talked to John," Hagel said of the measure, which would remove the buy-in cost for veterans to receive greater education benefits. "John as you know has been involved on other pursuits. He has taken a close look at it, his people are. Both Webb and I had hoped he would get on it. Obviously Obama is on it and Clinton, three out of four Vietnam veterans in the Senate are on it, people like John Warner and James Inhofe are on it. So, obviously each Senator has to make his own decision on this thing. But we are going to continue to help educate McCain's staff and we hope he becomes part of it."

Buzzsaw?

In November, supporters of Bush's War and Economic Meltdown (Republican and Democrat alike) are going to feel like they're living in one of those "Left Behind" novels.

Obama-Webb '08 sounds GREAT! I would also find a prominent slot for Sen. Hagel.

So Hagel is against the war - big deal. He's a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN. He's on the wrong side of every OTHER issue. I would NEVER vote for a ticket that included him, no matter who was at the top of the ticket.

So . . . . . you agree with Bush that we should be in the war and should stay there?

You must not have any family serving over in Iraq or you certainly would not be saying that.

This character has been taught one color is better than the other. If your a Democrat you can do no wrong, if your a Republican everything you do is wrong. (one of THOSE kind)

You know there are a few, a very, very few conservative Republicans who do have integrity. They belong to the old school conservatism, and they really don't have a party to turn to. Kind of like Liberals. Just ain't no where to go to have your political voices heard among the herd of neo-barbarians.

It is a BIG DEAL, Lily. Try to picture 11,000 American soldiers without limbs, try to picture 30,000 Iraqi children dying in the arms of their mothers. I would rather vote for Hagel than for Hillary.

Hegel just reinforces my thesis that the Rethugs do not want to win this one! They know what a mess we're in. If they loose the Whitehouse in '08, they can spend four years blaming the lack of recovery, rising taxes and misery in Iraq all on the Democrats. They will not support any Democratic measure to correct the problems, it will be a miserable four year IF we let them get away with it.

The only solution is taking the Senate as well as the Executive and House. Run Hegel and the rest out of town on a rail. Then, perhaps we can then go after the real problem, as I see it, the Supremes.

Hagel is not running again. He has served, but I am afraid that he was not loud and ornery soon enough over this debacle in Iraq and everywhere else in the world. Other than that..he seemed to back this corrupt administration the rest of the way. And "Myfriends" McCain will not face anything like a buzzsaw if the MSM keeps protecting him as they presently are. I would like to see what Hagel is going to do when he isn't in the Senate...or which lobby group he will make his other millions supporting. I respect him for stepping out on this war, but I don't see him convincing any of his comrades. And yes, the Democrats can be blamed for it all once in office, IF in office. I can hear Boehner now through the tears and that jackass from Oklahoma and the likes of them. ARGH

The MSM is not protecting McCain. The real news of the moment is Obama and Hillary. Once one of those is proclaimed the candidate, then watch to see what they do to McCain.

Of course, knowing the media, by now, they are so hooked on the daily feed of garbage about the candidates, I am sure they are going to conduct themselves as they have towards Obama and Hillary.

I agree with you fed, the Republicans are repulsed with the idea of having a short old guy with a disability representing them. I think they'd really like to see Obama win and take advantage of him, then have him take the blame so that they can come in four years later and 'save the day.'

Ho HO HO bewrong. I would not want to be the person or party to even TRY to take advantage of Sen. Obama!!!!!!! He is much too intelligent, unlike some of the bloggers who think he's a push-over. Shoe fit?

Hagel is the TRUE AMerican hero.

McCain? He bombed civilians from 10,000 feet; got cocky, and got shot down.

Hagel? He saw bloodshed up close and he's got scars to prove it.

He's make a great Sec. of Defense. Unlike the dorks Bush had in there and continues to have in there.

Why would Hagel make a "great Sec. of Defense"? A single example of being on the correct side of a policy issue does not even an adequate Sec of Defense make.

To all of the people thinking Hagel will make a great addition to the Obama team: I would love to have some of whatever you are smoking! Not in this lifetime would Hagel join with Clinton or Obama.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:50 PM on 04/03/2008

Why?

I think having Republicans in prominent positions in a Democratic Administration would be the first step towards making peace with the Republicans. And once that is done, so much more will be able to be accomplished!

Hagel's fawning over Obama is self-motivated. The Times of London has reported that he met with Obama recently about becoming his Secretary of Defense if Obama were to win the general election. Another republican, Richard Lugar, is being considered for Secretary of State. In addition, the story talks about Obama's many other G.O.P. supporters, including top Bush strategists working on his campaign. It's confounding how David Axelrod is able to market his candidate as a liberal and conservative at the same time - something for everybody. That so many Democratic Party leaders approve of this hugfest with the G.O.P. is inexplicable, other than that they may be trying intentionally to filed a losing candidate, thus securing their own power for another four years. Here's a link to the Times story. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3466823.ece. For more on the G.O.P.'s role in the primaries, I've posted a story at thecityedition.com.

Your logic is idiotic to put it politely. Abraham Lincoln found wisdom in placing people in his cabinet from BOTH parties. Some of them didn't even LIKE Lincoln! That's the BEST way to get input from experts. It ensures you get the truth instead of cronyism. This partisan RED against BLUE crap is stupid. That's politics from the past. LOOK AT THE INDIVIDUAL! Go Bama!

On more than one occasion I have seen Chuck on a talking head show. Each time I have been incredibly impressed with him. Kind of like I used to respect McCain before he became a standard bearer for the republican party by selling out his soul to get the nomination...this after they smeared him in the last election.

As a die hard dem. here I honestly used to respect McBush, now I could never respect him. Hagel if you are looking for the big tent party, come on over and lets sit down and chat.

Hagel likes to bask in his "anti-Republican" Republicanism. He spends a lot of time on his hair and goes on the talk shows so we can all see his saintly demeanor. I've seen these useless types come and go...they take the high ground and want to be enshrined. They're failed politicians, footnotes at best. Did Hagel run in the primaries? Too holy.

Funny, when a person does not like someone else but, for some reason, can't come up with a good reason, they start attacking looks.
