New York Times:

Americans are more dissatisfied with the country's direction than at any time since the New York Times/CBS News poll began asking about the subject in the early 1990s, according to the latest poll.

In the poll, 81 percent of respondents said they believed that "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track," up from 69 percent a year ago and 35 percent in early 2003.

If anyone needs me, I'll be getting ready for lunch. I've added to my resume the Isaac Bashevis singing I did with my college's chorale.

This country has been off-track since Dubya stole the election in 2000. Constitutional law has been re-defined, subverted, circumvented and ignored. Our Attorney's General, elected representatives in Congress, and the media have been bought-off to accept these policies as good for America, to make us safer and secure.
How does limiting freedom of speech (in the media) or suppressing the rights of people make us safe? How does monitoring detailed activities of law-abiding citizens help secure us? How do lies, spin, or re-definition of the truth help keep our democracy strong? How do torture, pre-emprive attacks upon, invasions and occupations of other nations make us safe in the world, when most despise our actions and policies? Where and how can one imagine that forsaking our values, principles or liberties (for the sake of politics) make us credible, much less a leader of the "free" world?
Torture, rape, murder illegal surveillance, and other techniques espoused by our government, having been utilized and condoned since this administration took office are now defended by the main stream media as acceptible in war time. We tried the Nazis in Nuremburg after WWII for just such actions, and now employ those very tactics as "necessary" to secure ourselves.
What utter hypocricy!!!

Americans were lulled into a false sense of security thinking those tax cuts, laissez-faire, trickle-down economic policies would stimulate the economy, businesses would grow and provide good-paying jobs. The businesses took those tax-cuts, advantage of de-regulation and loopholes, and then outsourced American jobs overseas to boost their profits. Others, like Enron and some banking firms, preyed upon consumers with utility outages, sub-prime loans which have come back to haunt not just the average person, but big firms as well. Now that the crisis of our national debt, credit crisis, dependency and addiction to copious consumption of non-renewable energy has hit the big companies, dissatisfaction with this administration is growing. People are losing their jobs and homes, but Bear Stearns got the bail out, and its CEO a golden parachute. Georgie will be retired in Crawford (with his pension and top-notched tax-payer provided life-time healthcare) when most find out their Social Security and Medicare benefits won't be there for them, as those trust funds have been looted. With over half of every tax dollar being used just to pay interest on our national debt (mostly owned by foreign countries), and the other half going towards the war (which Georgie, Dickie, and many Congressional representatives are reaping millions from), there's a country, once great, that is heading towards Third-World status.

Any sentient being having lived through the 1980's saw through that as glass.

Things can change. Al Sharpton is on MSNBC making complete sense in his calling for everyone to embrace Dr. King's dream of parity for all. A good start to a long overdue debate.

Quite a remarkable coincidence that the "results" of NYT's "polls" always manage to support the views of its editorial page.

Polls like any statistic need to be tempered with inherent variation stemming from things like sampling methods, the way in which the question is worded, the tone in which the question was asked, the mood of the person answering the poll question, and so on - however, breaking the 80% mark is rather significant as it cannot easily be explained away by uncontrolled variables.

Recover America.

Everyone in the country (but the right wing lunatics) knows we are on the wrong track! When it's more important to start a useless war you can't win than it is to make certain your citizens have a decent life. Then you know a Republican is in office and no good is going to come from it! But, I know we are fighting terrorism??????? It would be nice if we had a President who was smart enough to figure out that starting wars isn't a way to fight terrorism. This whole concept has become a cruel joke!

We, as a nation, have decided that Treason is now okay.

Ethics, honor and the Constitution are looked upon as old hat. Obscure.

We accept lies with few to no questions ... on the more important concerns. We never openly questioned 9-11 and accepted the thousands of unanswered questions. When Cheney and Bush glibly say 'So" to our soldiers dying needlessly, we back down. Pelosi and many other Democrats decided that tacit consent would be the new rule and even allowed treason to be without any penalty. She became their personal guardian.

They all get a slice of the pie that way and screw the public.

We seem to live with this ... some even applaud it. About 20% want to see a nation run by, for and of corporations. No bid contracts, jobs sent to India and Pakistan, the Fed, a PRIVATE organization, is handed over amazing powers while Cheney claims that all energy meetings shall not be known to us taspayers from here on out.

Ron Paul was right there and we turned the other way. We allowed the media to push him back and then the lackies were promoted as usual. Now we've got McCain and Clinton as 2 of the 3 at the fore front? How in Hell did that happen? As planned of course.

We are focused on small potatoes ... entertained to death. Dumbed down as a nation at an amazing rate over these past 50 years. Our grandchildren will probabkly hate us for

People can't handle looking too closely at 911. The ineveitable conclusion of a detailed analysis would drive most to take up arms. Don't go there America. Go back to sleep. Watch some more TV. Have some beer America. Its OK. Everything is UNDER CONTROL.

You're right Dan, except for the fact that Clinton and McCain aren't the two front runners: Obama and McCain are. That means there's hope. You're grandchildren are those who are voting for Obama because we/they know what a despicable job you all have done with steering an entire civilization into the ground.

Good Grief what took them soo long. What I find disturbing is that 50% of the country not only doesn't understands whats going on, but doesn't have the gut to get an accurate feel for things.

Maybe 81% of America believes were on the wrong track but unfortunately about 50% are willing to go vote to stay on the same track in the fall. A vote for McCain is a vote for the same. So until the 81% figure out that you can't change the track until you change the Party in the White House they can look forward to running down that track for a long long time.

In the meantime, we can wonder why Obama and Hillary can only find a microphone when they want to ask for votes.

You mean to tell me that they can't shame the rest of the Senate into throwing most of THEIR policies into reverse?

We your elected Representatives are very concerned with your concerns. We'll get back to you, meanwhile enjoy your cake.

Why does Senator Rockefeller feel he didn't have time to read the completed (and yet to be released) "PHASE II" Report at the Obama rally?

Why the picture of Bush? Let's include the Congress, too. Apparently, the Senate is giving handouts to the rich at the taxpayer's expense.
