New York Times:

Americans are more dissatisfied with the country's direction than at any time since the New York Times/CBS News poll began asking about the subject in the early 1990s, according to the latest poll.

In the poll, 81 percent of respondents said they believed that "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track," up from 69 percent a year ago and 35 percent in early 2003.

LOL. Concern is at the "greatest ever recorded?" Yep, I bet people today are really feeling so much worse than the poor sods in 1929. Uh huh, the folks sitting in gas lines in the Carter years were much happier. Absolutely, peope were kicking up their heels during the race riots and Vietnam protests of the late 60's. Oh, let's not forget the good ol' days of the Civil War, the Dust Bowl, etc., etc., etc.. What a bunch of short sighted fools work in the NYTimes and Huffpo headline writing department.

Good point, our nation has been in crises before. It just seems like a shame when the troubles are caused by the President, because of his idiocy.

selfserving idiocy.

It's amazing how people want to blame all the country's woes on W. I think most would agree that the current economic ills are driven mainly by the mortgage crisis and energy costs, right? You can't seriously lay all that at the feet of W (and please don't say "it happened on his watch" -- I really want to punch people who use that kind of superficial argument). Do you actually think W has the power to purposely drive up oil prices to the degree we've seen? Do you really want to deny the supply and demand forces? And while the mortgage woes may have been preventable, even geniuses like Alan Greenspan didn't see that one coming. And I think people have lost some perspective on that issue as well. These subprime borrowers and the lenders are both suffering because they took on excessive risk. Home ownership is still at very high levels.

So you are saying George W. Bush is not the worst president in United States history, and the country he (as his administration's figurehead) has helped run into the ground is headed for some good times?

I recognize you have somewhat of an idea of American history (albeit warped and somewhat devoid of proper context), but you sure are ignorant about what's happening now.

See my response above to AdLib. It's laughable that you used the word "warped" when you made huge illogical jumps to warp what I wrote into some kind of advocacy of the Bush administration.

Okay...so people aren't suffering today because there were other terrible times in American history. Sounds like you learned reasoning from George Bush.

So if there is a woman in the hospital with a flesh-eating virus, she's not really suffering because there's a woman down the hall who had cancer.

Can you spell D-U-H?

Your willful mischaracterization of what I wrote and absurd attempt at logic is laughable. What did I write that stated or implied that I think "people aren't suffering today"? I was just trying to provide some perspective for all the Chicken Littlers here on huffpo.

Can you read, idiot? The article said, "...than at any time since the New York Times/CBS News poll began asking about the subject in the early 1990s." They were talking about the POLL, not "ever in history."

That's why I said "headline writing" idiot. So, if I invented my own misery index, did the first measurement, and wrote an article with a headline that said "Best Ever", you wouldn't have a problem with that? Ooooooh, it dates all the way back to the "early 90's"?! What a historical bunch of big picture visionaries those folks the Times are.

You really can't be serious? You think waterboarding and a questionable war trumps things like, oh let's just pick a few off the top of our heads... lynchings, slaughtering of native Americans, Vietnam (ever hear of My Lai), Japanese-American internment in WW II... Thanks for proving my point about your short sightedness.

There will likely be a sweep of Democrats into congress that will constitute a large enough majority to right many of the wrongs that have been committed by this corrupt and morally bankrupt Bush Administration and its Republican Party minions. I think it will be a congress that acts.

Massive national debt, massive housing bubble, massive wars with no end in sight, massive militarism (MIC), massive ignorance in Washington D.C. (i.e., Lobby Land, USA), massive erosion of good quality jobs, massive medical costs, and massive tution costs for the prospective college student. And it's like the average American is at sea in a tiny boat. A perfect storm is on the horizon brewing...the wind and waves are restless.

.....forgetting massive invasion by Third World, ILLEGAL ALIENS.....?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:56 AM on 04/04/2008

Dude, why are you so afraid of THIRD WORLD ILLEGAL ALIENS? Why not 2nd world or first? At least twice I have seen this topic in your replies. Do they frighten you worse than corporate slimeballs who want you to buy Dora The Explorer backpacks and Thomas the Tank Engine Trains (Oh heck, Dora is Hispaici-sh and Thomas might have illegally immigrated from the Island of Sodor) but forget about the profits going to other countries? Do people who want to make their lives better scare you more than illegal wars fought for resources? Oh dear, why bring this bull to the table when there is more to worry about? Sure, illegal immigration is not right. They are breaking the law. They stress our already stressed out system but the push-pull factor of this type of immigration is more due to the push of their society and the pull of easily finding jobs here. Isn't there a better problem to get so worked up about or is it because they are brown?

lets see we are an imperialist and war mongering country and the chickens are coming home to roost and we are concerned.

a black preacher tells us the chickens are coming home to roost and americans get upset. what denial. americans love to play the victim role not realizing we are a republic guess who put these den of thieves and war mongers into office

and guess who has supported this industial military complex for the last 6 decades. demos and repubs alike.

and we call jane fonda a traitor and mc cain a hero. the very defintion of an imperialist country. even obama calls mc war a hero. that makes obama an imperialist also.

we americans deserve mc cain. he now leads in the polls. further proof we are a war mongering country.

and the dollar is doing what against the euro. now dont forget americans to look for that socialist under you bed tonight like your parents looked for that commie.

no wait dont look for that socialist he is building our tanker planes for our industrial military complex and making great wages doing that while americans work as wal mart greeters. dumb and dumber.

Researcher, I liked your post and would like to recommend that every concerned American,
read "Killing Hope" by William Blum. The book gives the details of every CIA and military
involvement since WWII. It does not make one proud to be an American, and backs up most
of what you are saying. I think our country does need a new direction, we simply need
someone who is not a corrupt moron, to bring us along.

This is what happens when you give the worst president in history two terms in office. If McCain were to get into office, though, we'll look back on these heady times of 81% dissatisfaction as the "good old days."

Is it "official" now? Isn't that amazing! Did someone take a poll? Or was it a survey? Or did they just draw straws?

What's to be concerned about? Just because Bush and Cheney both act like they don't care what happens to the country? Just because they both have the biggest, shit eatinest grins in the world? Looking at the pictures of them grinning, they look like they were taken over by aliens, or something. It's down right spooky.

As much as I dislike union politics, trade unions are responsible for the middle class, and are ALWAYS the first body gutted by conservatives.

At least we had a modicum of counterbalance to unfettered corporate greed. Perhaps we may yet again see a rise in unions if we somehow survive this next recession (I sure hope it is only a recession).
