Pregnant Man On Oprah: I Have Intercourse With My Wife

Thomas the now famous transgendered pregnant man appeared on "Oprah" today and talked about the impending birth of his child. Thomas kept his female reproductive organs to one day have children. He and his wife Nancy shared their excitement and their nerves over the impending birth, and got specific with what happened to make this possible. They had trouble finding a doctor willing to take Thomas on a obstetrics patient, but did, and then used a sperm donor. Nancy delivered the sperm to Thomas at home. Thomas, 34, went off of testosterone two years beforehand so he could get pregnant. However, the testosterone, he tells a curious Oprah, had over the years enlarged his clitoris into a small penis, enabling him to have intercourse with his wife.

I don' t understand the this story. A WOMAN is pregnant. Neither women fathered the child. The only thing remotely unique about the situation is that one of the women took a bunch of hormones for a few years and grew a beard.

The pregnant woman had her breasts cut off... that is all. She never had the "surgery" to have a faux penis formed from loose skin. Her ovaries were never removed. She is not, and has never been a man.

In my book, even if she had her ovaries removed and a faux penis constructed, she would still be a woman, albeit a masculinized woman, because it's your DNA (to scientists, your genotype) that determines your gender, not your body shape. Anybody could take a car and modify the body and turn it into something else (as regards appearance), but unless you replace the chassis and engine and drive train it's still a caddy under the skin.

To be considered transgendered, this man must have had both male and female characteristics at birth. He openely admitted he was not born with traditional male genitalia, but that does not mean he doesn't have other male characteristics. Despite the fact that he kept his female organs intact in hopes of rearing a child one day, he obviously decided to live his life as a male vs. female.

His choice to choose one sex over the other is not the same as someone who wants or has had a sex change operation. He was born with both characteristics but decided he was more male than female.

The only thing I'm curious about is the effect of the mother's testosterone on the baby. Did they discuss that on Oprah? Will they grow up to be supermasculine babies or are there possible harmful effects, or no effects?

I'm sure this baby will grow up in a loving environment, and that's what's important. Just because other parents have a penis and a vagina, that doesn't make them automatically "ideal" either.

Part of me hopes that this kid grows up to be a benevolent genius, and proves the haters wrong--but then again there are thousands of gay and lesbian couples with kids that already demonstrate this. This kid doesn't need to prove anything.

I am the most liberal, non-judgemental person I know and I watched this on Opera yesterday because I had seen some media pictures about it. I for one was a tad uncomfortable only because I knew how many nutz this was going to bring out of the closet. It does not at all surprise me to hear all of the hate remarks. People are afraid and intimindated by things they don't understand. I think that they only did this to hope to get the circus over with as fast a possible so they could go on to living as normal a life as possible. I loved the wife's daughters attitudes about the entire thing. When will people stop being so afraid of what they don't know and just accept it for what it is. You do not need to be educated in transgender issue to comment, just biology. Biologist determine the sex of an animal by looking at the reproductive system (not external characters). So this lady is, well, a lady. She has kept her reproductive organs as female and that is what defines her. She is impersonating a male, but she is still a female. So the actual "news" here is that a woman with a beard is pregnant. Not much of a news worth reporting, I think....

I agree...why is this even news? I have no problem with a transgendered person having a baby...but she's not a man. A man has male reproductive organs and genes; a female has female reporductive organs and genes, and a hermaphrodite has some of both. It's her life, and if she wants to make her outside appearance reflect the gender she feels she is in her heart, that is just fine; if she wants to refer to herself as a man and marry a woman and have a baby, that's just fine; but at the end of the day she's NOT A GENETIC MALE. All these news stories on a "pregnant man" are just sensationalist and deceptive.

She has a vagina and a uterus that she was born with -- she simply stopped taking her hormones halfway through the process, so she has facial hair.

I am sure that when she started taking the hormones (before she stopped), she took a doctor's note to the DMV so she could have her drivers license gender changed to "M", so she can legally call herself a male.

When she is topless, showing off her "baby bump", her masectomy scars are still fresh and red.

It looked to me like they didn't need any money. If you watched the show they had a beautiful house and a wonderful neighborhood. It looked to me as if they were doing fine. No need for money. They have their own business but said they prepared to go without all they have if people run them out of the state and they have to go elsewhere. It's interesting to see everyone's perspective on this subject. Mine has several levels.

I'm all for freedom to feel and believe whatever you wish. I think my posts here at Huff have shown clearly that I hold few things as importantly as our right to do so. At the same time, I also believe merely saying something doesn't make it so...

This person is pregnant. This is wonderful. As the father of 4 beautiful girls I can say there are few things as rewarding and loving as holding your child and seeing them happy. Talking about things, playing, teaching, etc... It's great, and I'm glad this person gets to experience this joy. That said...

The other hand says just because someone wishes to be something they are not, and says so, does not merit this kind of attention. What if someone claimed to be from another planet? All biological evidence points to this person being Human, but they still held fast to their claim. Would Oprah be talking to them? Would they be considered anything but looney?

What's not to understand? When something makes it to Oprah, it gets a lot of attention. If it were a few years back, she's a side show freak.
