Thomas Pregnant Man Oprah

Thomas the now famous transgendered pregnant man appeared on "Oprah" today and talked about the impending birth of his child. Thomas kept his female reproductive organs to one day have children. He and his wife Nancy shared their excitement and their nerves over the impending birth, and got specific with what happened to make this possible. They had trouble finding a doctor willing to take Thomas on a obstetrics patient, but did, and then used a sperm donor. Nancy delivered the sperm to Thomas at home. Thomas, 34, went off of testosterone two years beforehand so he could get pregnant. However, the testosterone, he tells a curious Oprah, had over the years enlarged his clitoris into a small penis, enabling him to have intercourse with his wife.

Read all the Thomas' appearance on Oprah on her website. He is also featured in the new issue of People magazine.

this is bizarre. people can do what they wish with their lives, but this is kind of too much for me to handle. With this kind of story on this kind of blog anything other than a "bravo" or complete apathy is deemed intolerant. I think everyone's got their boundaries with what they are able to mentally compute and if nothing else this story is a boundary tester for the average, even for the not so average, American. But i think this is some pretty wild shit. I give them credit for having the balls (no pun intended) to come out (no pun intended) with this story. That's my awkward two cents...

I don't care what people do with their lives and bodies. As long as they don't harm anyone else, have fun. My only concern in this story is the health of the baby. But if the doctors say the baby's fine, wonderful. Now let's move on.

It is not a baby until born.

It is actually just a mass of tissue.

So, the bottom line is that the "guy's" DNA is female. He just did some cosmetic and
hormonal changes on his physical body. But what is going to be tricky is how the birth certificate will be filled out. If he gave birth, he is the biological mother. Mother is female.
He will create yet a new legal issue when that important document is filled out. He is married to a woman. Not legal for two women to be married. So, how will this change the
legality of the marriage if he now gives birth, redefining himself as a female.

It's a freak show within which a new innocent life will suffer the consequences.

Further, with all of the hormonal treatments and physical alterations which have been done, I wonder about the actual development of the child, and the conditions for a healthy delivery and birth. Freaky yes, but what has been granted patents in the laboratories just this year makes this look pale by comparison.

Did you know you can get your gender marker changed on your birth certificate? (watches head explode). Except in a handful of states, that is.

You're right that there are legal issues, but not in this case. He's a guy, legally.

Now in my case... medically, I'm female (just ask my OB/GYN). Legally, well, it's complicated. I have dual UK/Australian citizenship. My UK Birth certificate says "male", but my UK passport says "female". Due to vagaries in the law - I'm Intersexed rather than merely Transsexual - I can't get the BC changed.

Should I get divorced, I could only marry a man in Australia, or a woman in the UK, as neither country tolerates same-sex marriages. And I'm married to a woman in Australia.

In 1985, I looked male, and the diagnosis then was "undervirilised male", mildly Intersexed. In 2001, with come technical help (as you can imagine) I became a biological father. In 2005, symptoms of my condition manifested, and on the basis of a really thorough and comprehensive series of tests with 21st century technology, MRIs, Ultrasounds, Genetic tests etc the diagnosis was changed to "severely androgenised woman". I no longer looked remotely male by then, much to my relief.

It took me a 20 month legal fight to get an Australian passport.... the complexities are immense. I think my legal sex in the USA would depend not just on what state I'm in, but in which county. I just consider myself a woman with a very unusual medical history.

If his internal organs enabled him to get pregnant, then technically he still IS a woman, even if he cut off his boobs and has facial hair.
Men don't have reproductive abilities inside their bodies. Only women do.

Honestly, the biology is the simplest part. We all learned basic biology in high school. The challenge is to imagine beyond the nuts and bolts of it. What does it mean to be a man? In what ways might being a man impact your life? Why might someone who is a man potentially not want to be one, or vice-versa? I'm giving you these starter questions because it seems like you think you're taking a pop quiz and have been asked to solve the biological puzzle. What Thomas is telling us is that the pieces don't necessarily fit how you think they should.

And, human dignity is struck yet another blow.
Is there nothing people will not expose for a few minutes on tv?
I feel for thepoor baby. Not because of the transgender thing, but because the poor little thing is going to be part of a three ring circus of media attention.

Look, I hear you about going on Oprah. But you can't know their motives, and you also don't know that they're going to raise the kid up in some kind of media circus. Odds are this will die down really quickly. Who's going to stay interested in the story once the baby's born?

Your point is well made. Because, most of us have already lost interest in it. But, it is not really because this is not a mind boggling story... it is really because there will always be an even MORE mind boggling story 15 minutes later! What a world. *c*

I agree with you Sharon B because rather it's now or 10 years from now people with have acess to something called the internet and can look up this story and that could be the kid in your neighborhood and because of their exploitation of this situation this child can be the target of true violence.

If these people are going to put themselves in front and center of all of this media attention, then they must realize that many people including myself are going to make judgements about them. I am only being honest about how I feel. I think that they are turning this whole thing into a freak show. I don't care what goes on in other people's personal lives, as long as they don't hurt anyone. I don't need the details of how they have intercourse together and all those other tidbits. They are going to have a baby together, and they need to THINK about how this public spectacle will only damage the child emotionally as he/she grows up.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:21 AM on 04/04/2008

Who gives you the authority to decide what's "way too much"? You don't have to like it. Just don't come around acting like a judging little baby who's angry that the world's not like you. Damn, I can't even imagine how uptight a person would have to be to get all nasal in their voice and say something like, "This is too much!" Take it easy, baby. You got one life to live. Enjoy the show.

I have the authority to decide that these people are freaks to me. I don't care that they are gay and he/she is transgendered. I find all of the pictures tasteless and the way they are exposing their unborn baby to this huge media frenzy. These people are media whores. This is just my opinion.

This case isn't remarkable on a biological level - but it is something that I hope other transgendered inviduals think very carefully about before taking the same route. As a researcher who works with endocrinologists assisting people make the hormonal adjustments, I'm aware of the difficulties many living the life of a transgendered person goes through. I think it is small-minded to pass judgement on people's life choices without walking a mile in their shoes; however, the thing that makes me uncomfortable is when another innocent party is also subject to the consequences of those choices. I'm not at all sure that previous hormonal treatment with testosterone won't affect some downstream developmental aspect of the child (for example - would a female child be more likely to develop anovulatory androgen excess?) - not to mention the psychological isolation this kid will have to go through trying to figure out exactly how he/she came to be. To add further turmoil - all this publicity will make it very difficult to slowly adjust without all the stress that being under this kind of spotlight brings to even the most emotionally stable of individuals.

Oh "think of the children! The poor children!" strawman argument. My wife and I raised her 3 kids just fine. THey are all happy productive members of the community. They were HARDLY isolated, psychologically or otherwise.

And as we all know, news stories ALWAYS stick around for some 18-20 years.

My wife and I raised her kids just fine. They were HARDLY psychologically or socially isolated. These kids were raised by 4 loving adults, my wife, her ex-wife, and us spouses. These kids are now incredible members of our community.

I always love the "I don't mean to pass judgment but what about the CHIDREN?" posts.

From what can be surmised by your response - it hardly appears to be the same situation as a female to male transgender suspending testosterone treatment to give birth to an artificially inseminated sperm from an unknown donor. I didn't mean to imply that children growing up in a family where one parent is a male transgender would be psychologically affected. I think this particular situation (i.e. - the headline making "pregnant man") isn't an ideal one to decide to expose an unborn child to due to the possibility of having an altered "maternal factors" environment in the womb, the public "freak show" that will mark the child's enterance into this world, and the fact that his/her biological mother is a man - which can be isolating since it isn't exactly a common feature. Children are certainly resilient, but it's nice to just give a moment's thought about what it would feel like rather then one's own personal wants.

Your concern is a good one, but there have been no problems recorded in any of the other times this has happened previously.

See http://www.transparentthemovie.com/ from 2005 which documented 19 other cases. They're by no means the only ones. The difference is, that with the backlash against Gay Marriage, and the continued erosion of rights for TS people because of that, we're now going public.

We used to be able to "fly under the radar" and "not make waves", but now the Fundies won't let us.
