WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton's chief strategist apologized Friday for meeting with Colombian officials pushing a free trade agreement that the presidential candidate opposes.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the strategist, Mark Penn, met Monday with Colombia's ambassador to the United States. Clinton advisers said Penn's meetings were not connected to the campaign, but part of his job as chief executive of the lobbying and public relations firm Burson-Marsteller Worldwide.

But a Clinton adviser said the candidate was not happy to learn about the meeting, and Penn issued a statement expressing regrets.

"The meeting was an error in judgment that will not be repeated and I am sorry for it," Penn said in a written statement. "The senator's well-known opposition to this trade deal is clear and was not discussed."

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said the candidate has not discussed the Colombian deal with Penn.

"Senator Clinton's opposition to the Colombian Trade Deal is clear and she will be voting against it," Singer said.

The Colombian government is trying to secure congressional passage of the agreement signed in 2006 by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and the Bush administration.

According to Justice Department filings, Colombia agreed last year to pay Burson-Marsteller $300,000 to help "educate members of the U.S. Congress and other audiences" about the trade deal and secure continued U.S. funding for the $5 billion anti-narcotics program Plan Colombia.

Clinton and her Democratic rival Barack Obama oppose the deal. Clinton told the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO this week that the United States needs new trade policies before it has new trade deals. "That includes no trade deal with Colombia while violence against trade unionists continues in that country," she said.

Penn's political consulting firm, Penn, Schoen & Berland, has been paid $10.8 million so far by Clinton's campaign.

Penn has come under criticism for other Burson-Marsteller clients, including tobacco giant Philip Morris and corporate clients accused of union-busting activity. While Penn says he does not personally work on any accounts that could be construed as anti-labor, labor leaders have publicly expressed concern about his involvement with the campaign.

Union leaders backing Obama criticized Penn's involvement with the Colombians. Change to Win called for Penn's resignation and Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa issued a statement that said Clinton's opposition to the Colombian agreement had been undermined.

"How can we trust that a President Hillary Clinton would stand strong against this trade deal when her top adviser is being paid by Colombia to promote it?" Hoffa asked.

Penn gives jobs away while Hillary pretends to oppose such deals . The crew of rats running Hillarys bid would sham Bush. Somebody wake up the talking heads at CNN and MSNBC and tell them to try and cover some real news . Oh I forgot HRC and Wolfson might not like it.

Hey! I wonder if Morning Joe Scarborough will still be in love with the Clinton women now. Joe is only hiding the fact that he hates Obama. He has never liked the Clintons, he is a republican and always talked about them until now. The sleeze ball!!

"I would ask you to look at that story, substitute my name for Senator Obama," Clinton said. "If some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments and basically saying ignore what I'm saying because it's only political rhetoric ... I think it raises serious questions." - Hillary Clinton on University of Chicago professor Austan Goolsbee's meeting with some mid level members of the Canadian consulate

This didn't take too long to come back to her. And this is the fundamental problem with always going on the attack. Especially when your own people were doing what you accuse your rival of in the first place. Petard, meet the Clinton campaign.

This is just the tip of the iceburg, folks. (I've posted a link to show what the Republicans are getting ready to lay on Hillary if she wins the nomination, below.) When all is said and done, the Clintons aren't just cozy with NAFTA... The Clintons ARE NAFTA:

[from Townhall.com 10-22-07]:

"Just look at recent Burson-Marsteller clients that have been in the news in the past two weeks.

BLACKWATER " the hired guns in Iraq.

Blackwater"s CEO, Eric Prince, hired Burson"s lobbying subsidiary, BKSH, to prep him for his Congressional testimony " helping him to glibly explain why the civilian cowboys who work for him have been involved in 195 shooting incidents. After news reports about the controversial representation, Burson-Marsteller ran screaming from Blackwater, describing it as only a "temporary" engagement with no involvement by Penn. And the Clinton campaign affirmed its support for Penn.

While Blackwater is certainly no Whitewater for Hillary Clinton, ... raises serious questions about Penn"s dual roles as strategist for the potential next president and adviser to corporations and governments who have ongoing big business in Washington.

Then there was Countrywide Financial, ... Microsoft ... Armenia, (trying to pass a Congressional resolution accusing Turkey of genocide) ... The Peoples Party of Pakistan ...!

Didn't Hillary's campaign make a big stink with much media coverage of one of Obama's numerous unpaid "advisors" talking to a mid-level Canadian? Here is her Chief Strategist sitting down with the Ambassador of Columbia. The Ambassador!

Does anyone in their right minds honestly believe that if Hillary was elected, Penn would not have extreme access to her. And he'll make even more money!

Vote Hillary--The Same Old Rotten Self-Promoting Buddy System!

Clinton argued that the press should aggressively pursue the story. "Just ask yourself [what you would do] if some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments," she said. "

If Penn, working so intimately with Hillary, cannot pursuade her that the Colombian deal is a doozy, then one wonders what the Colombians are paying him for.

Hillary Clinton better get on top of this Mark Penn story real, real, quick. If the media fans it, voters in Pennsylvania are going to begin to understand about who she really is.
And, the way the country of Columbia treats union members is beyond the pale.
I don't see how Clinton is going to be able to make the argument that her top person (who she pays ten million dollars) is somehow disconnected from being the point person for Columbia, a country that is very anti union, regardless of how she positions herself on the upcoming trade vote.
It keeps getting worse for her by the day. If I were her I'd grab my hat and head for the door. She is going to wake up the day after the PA primary ten million dollar in debt and two more expensive primaries ahead of her. Time to bail out.

Especially since Hillary was on the board of directors of Walmart when the CEO and executive board was on a rampant campaign to supress union representation, with the President of Walmart at the time calling the Unions "bloodsuckers".

Gee, this makes me think of that whole dust-up with the Canadian government official who was reassured that Hillary was just engaging in political posturing when she said she was going to renegotiate NAFTA (originally reported as OBAMA's campaign, just in time to honk up his chances in Ohio, and then a quick apology from the Canadians... "Oops, we meant Clinton, eh?").

Now we see the real agenda... all free trade all the time with anyone who's interested (no matter how corrupt).

And again, the third side of this coin for me is the whole issue of managing your organization. Presidents must be very, very good at surrounding themselves with the right people and managing those people to achieve the best possible results. Clinton's campaign in this regard has been a circus of horrors. How can she have so little control over the people she is paying to run her organization? Geez, no wonder her campaign is nearly bankrupt and stiffing everyone they owe money to. The management skills here are deplorable. Hillary would get fired from my company in a hot minute.

Global capital vs. global labor? No, don't even think in those terms. Let's sponsor a flag-burning amendment. Hillary is a globalist and a free trader. She is decidedly militaristic and anti-labor. How can people continue to put their heads in the sand. I feel like kicking their backsides for being so ignorant and stupid. They will vote themselves into more trickle up economics for Hillary's friends in investment banking on Wall Street.

It's time for Senator Hillary Clinton to send her vaunted 'chief strategist' Mark Penn packing -- back to his job consulting for union busting corporations and anti-labor governments for good.

"We have questioned Penn's role in the Clinton campaign in the past for his representation of union busting employers like Cintas. At that time, Penn said there was a wall between him and his firm's representation of union busters. The latest revelation that Penn -- whose firm represents the Colombian government in its effort to secure passage of a so-called free trade agreement -- is actively involved in securing its passage in the middle of Senator Clinton's presidential campaign is outrageous. It also suggests that he has been playing a double role - advising the Senator on what to say to curry Democratic voters and advising the Colombian government on what to say to curry a majority of votes in Congress.

"The vast majority of Americans do not believe that we should be granting preferential trade status to a government that coddles death squads that target union organizers. Colombia remains the most dangerous country in the world for union members, where more than 2,200 workers have been murdered since the 1980s by Colombian death squads for trying to form unions while the government has done nothing to effectively stop the murders. It is time for Penn to go."

If she ever became president (God forbid) just think of all the different excuses you could look forward to when her rich campaign contributors start to collect on the IOUs Hillary gave out in exchange for donations. Of course, you would have to wait until the conflicts came to light, since she would not disclose them voluntarily.

Penn looks exactly like what he is, a smarmy, over indulgent pig who uses his insider contacts to make money and gratify his senses.
