WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton's chief strategist apologized Friday for meeting with Colombian officials pushing a free trade agreement that the presidential candidate opposes.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the strategist, Mark Penn, met Monday with Colombia's ambassador to the United States. Clinton advisers said Penn's meetings were not connected to the campaign, but part of his job as chief executive of the lobbying and public relations firm Burson-Marsteller Worldwide.

But a Clinton adviser said the candidate was not happy to learn about the meeting, and Penn issued a statement expressing regrets.

"The meeting was an error in judgment that will not be repeated and I am sorry for it," Penn said in a written statement. "The senator's well-known opposition to this trade deal is clear and was not discussed."

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said the candidate has not discussed the Colombian deal with Penn.

"Senator Clinton's opposition to the Colombian Trade Deal is clear and she will be voting against it," Singer said.

The Colombian government is trying to secure congressional passage of the agreement signed in 2006 by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and the Bush administration.

According to Justice Department filings, Colombia agreed last year to pay Burson-Marsteller $300,000 to help "educate members of the U.S. Congress and other audiences" about the trade deal and secure continued U.S. funding for the $5 billion anti-narcotics program Plan Colombia.

Story continues below

Clinton and her Democratic rival Barack Obama oppose the deal. Clinton told the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO this week that the United States needs new trade policies before it has new trade deals. "That includes no trade deal with Colombia while violence against trade unionists continues in that country," she said.

Penn's political consulting firm, Penn, Schoen & Berland, has been paid $10.8 million so far by Clinton's campaign.

Penn has come under criticism for other Burson-Marsteller clients, including tobacco giant Philip Morris and corporate clients accused of union-busting activity. While Penn says he does not personally work on any accounts that could be construed as anti-labor, labor leaders have publicly expressed concern about his involvement with the campaign.

Union leaders backing Obama criticized Penn's involvement with the Colombians. Change to Win called for Penn's resignation and Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa issued a statement that said Clinton's opposition to the Colombian agreement had been undermined.

"How can we trust that a President Hillary Clinton would stand strong against this trade deal when her top adviser is being paid by Colombia to promote it?" Hoffa asked.

I know this:

Obama or one of his surrogates SERIOUSLY needs to come out with a memo or have a press confrerence re: the Florida and Michigan "re-votes." He is getting absolutely panned on political message boards. HRC supporters are making him out to be the one who is solely responsible somehow. This is clearly not the case but that won't stop people from spreading mis-information. People tend to not care that HRC supported this supposed "disenfranchisement" up until the point that she started losing. Something should have been said a while ago but, instead, they have been keeping quiet and i think that is the WRONG THING TO DO. You've got to kill this rumor SOONER rather than LATER because, unfortunately, a lot of people are just not that smart and will eat up whatever ignorance is spewed on the internet or radiowaves or on the television. Soundbyte politics bytes...BIG TIME.

Sadly, most of those people was not going to vote for Obama anyway. Do you see how stupid people can be? Obama did not disinfrancise Florida or Michigan, the DNC did. The people that are talking about this on the message boards are Hillary supporters.

The conflict of interest here is of staggering proportions. If Clinton does not demand his resignation from her campaign, or doesn't fire him, she will never be believed about where she stands on trade.

I think we may know where she stands on trade after this. That Mark Penn personally went is a clear indication. His firms position was, of course, assisted in their efforts to calm any fears of a future administrations commitment to a free trade deal like this one by his presence. Shame on you Hillary Clinton. This will not be as big a story as the Revrend Wright story and it most assuredly should be bigger. Utterly outrageous but she'll get away with it. I truly wish she would go away.

I don't see how firing him is going to help her, since she went to town on the NAFTA issue

Go back? Get real - there has been no slowdown from Columbia, only streamlining and centralized control.

She wanted to know how the stroy would be treted if one of her top strategist met with fireigns leaders on this. Well, let's take it to the voters of Pennsylvania and Indiana and see.

This better be a top question in the Pennsylvania debate. And I'd love a flier to make the rounds quoting her on the NAFTA issue, then showing this. She wants vetting, let's vett her.

Hillary's CHIEF campaign strategist is meeting with foreign governments to assist them in securing passage of a bill which Hillary CLAIMS she opposes ... Hello?? Hello?? Is this that deafening pregnant pause like the one when the reporters asked HRC's staff what real life 3 a.m. call experience she has??

What a fine corrupt specimen this man is? Makes you wonder what kind of job he would have in Hillary's White House? Maybe a special advisor ala Rove? Maybe if she would have picked better advisors who cared about HER campaign she'd be doing better? Maybe not, she's proven herself to a pretty corrupt specimen herself

Penn is getting paid MILLIONS from the Clinton campaign...and he has the gall to go behind her back and have meetings on a trade agreement she opposes ???????

We know (don't we??) how Hillary feels, or felt, about NAFTA...does the apple REALLY fall far from the tree ???

If it's not Bill shooting her campaign in the foot, it's a surrogate...or her LEAD advisor !!!!!

This is a big: WTF !!!!

You think she and Bill didn't know Penn just bopped down to Columbia for a few days? We are supposed to believe that Hillary didn't send him down there? If she didn't then it is clear that Penn is peddling his influence to foreign governments for personal gain. Let's dig into to this a little MSM.

This story should be getting so much more coverage. If the Obama campaign shows caution around Iraq it is regarded as inconsistently when Obama said specifically that we should pull out with greater care than we dove in (paraphrasing, he said it much better).

The Clinton campaign is demonstrating her inability to manage anything by this and her inability to manage Penn. Really, the Clinton campaign has got to be one of the worst managed in history.

Obama is not responsible for a comedian's rhetoric. This is Air America and Air America is responsible for Randi Rhodes. Nice try though.

The events part of the Obama website is one of the grassroots portions of that site. It is not top-down from the Obama campaign, it's bottom-up from supporters - we're the ones that create and post the vast majority of the events on that section. Is the "host" the Obama campaign? No. So it's a supporter-promoted event. So, a supporter hears about an Air America personality doing a gig in their town, he puts it up on the website and invites others to attend and then go out for food and drinks afterward to talk about the Obama campaign. Obama didn't "push and promote" it any more than Huffington Post is pushing and promoting your comment. Get it?

How does this compare to the supposed wink in Canada's direction prior to OH? She really owes the people who support her an apology. I used to be such a Clinton apologist, when I see something like this, I'm so glad that is not a position I take anymore.

This is exactly what I look forward to about not having Clinton. I got so tired of having to defend them over eight years, they wore me out, used up all their tokens.

C'mon folks, just because we, as mere mortals, are unable to live two totally opposed lives at the same time, each bringing us millions of dollars, without any compromise between the two relationships, does not mean that the fabled Clinton Machine members and brain trust can't do it. Give them credit for being able to hire people with the same level of integrity ... like Penn and Wolfson and ... oh and BTW ... ignore that man behind the curtain.

Look at Bill, he consorts with and accepts millions of dollars from foreign governments and none of that money or influence is EVER brought to bear on his wife's behalf. Bill's honest and a man of the people. He would never lie to us and because he was president, we should never question him or his wife about anything negative. That is disrespectful ... and Hillary bashing ... and Hillary hating ... and unfair treatment. Let's face it, just because the Clintons have 100 times the negative baggage than any other candidate in the race does not mean they should receive any more "vetting" questions about that baggage than anyone else. All vetting should be exactly equal unless that negatively impacts our Clintons, then we need to look at that statement again.

What don't you understand about "conflict of interest"

And I had to laugh at "Bill's honest and a man of the people."

As well as "just because the Clintons have 100 times the negative baggage than any other candidate in the race does not mean they should receive any more "vetting" questions about that baggage than anyone else". Her 100 times the negative baggage than any other candidate is EXACTLY why she should be held accountable! My gawd, are you really that dense?

I'm surprised that this isn't seen as a bigger story, especially in light of the accusations regarding NAFTA just prior to the Ohio primary.

Hopefully, this issue will open up a broader examination of this firm's support of other nefarious activities, like representing Blackwater.
