The New York Times notes that most of the Clinton's charitable contributions went to their own foundation, which has yet to give away much of the money:

During that time, the Clintons paid $33.8 million in federal taxes and claimed deductions for $10.2 million in charitable contributions. The contributions went to a family foundation run by the Clintons that has given away only about half of the money they put into it, and most of that was last year, after Mrs. Clinton declared her candidacy.

I love it when HuffPo reports banal activities of the Clintons - even philanthropy - as though they were scandalous.

Well, then you should be happy with the Clintons.

The Clinton Family Foundation in 2006 did give $75,000 to rebuild LA after Katrina - through the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund.

In all, it gave $1,275,000 in 2006, was given $1,581,000 by the Clintons, and earned $112,000 interest income on money it did not disburse yet. It's total expenses for the year were $3,669.

Besides $75,000 for Katrina, its other big donations were:

Arkansas Cancer Research Center Foundation Fund $100,000
Mrais Fareri Chidren's Hospital $100,000
Blythdale Children's Hospital $100,000
THEA Foundation $75,000
University of Arkansas (Clinton School) $75,000
Immanuel Baptist Church $50,000
Foothills Foundation (Columbine Memorial Fund) $50,000
Open Door Family Medical Centers $50,000

A "charitable foundation" is a tax shelter. More money would have gone to rebuild after Katrina, and other expenses we share as a nation, had the Clintons and everybody else with these "vanity" shelters paid their full share of taxes.

As a consequence, the burden for paying for our infrastructure (roads, bridges, rail lines, mass transit, dams, ports, waterways, etc.), national defense, police and fire fighting services, public health, food safety, education, environmental clean-up, natural resources (national parks, federal lands, water projects), health research, interest on the federal debt, anti poverty programs, social security, medicare, justice administration, community and regional development, veterans' benefits, federal employees' pension, foreign aid, falls to you and me.

Any American who STILL believes that Bill and Hillary Clinton are honest, decent, progressive people who deeply care about the middle class is either seriously deluded, smoking crack or just plain ol f_cking stupid. That's the bottom line. I mean you gotta love the In your face corruptness of the Clintons---"I am Bill Clinton, let me set up a Charitable Foundation, call it the Clinton Global Initiative that allows me to solicit donations from the world's richest people and then use those funds to fund my personal pet projects like the Clinton Presidential Library and my wife's Presidential Campaign. Hey tell you what, even better idea, I sold the Whitehouse (Lincoln Bedroom, FALN Terrorists & Marc Rich Pardons) on the way out last time. Let me sell the next Clinton Whitehouse to the highest bidders before Hillary gets there, you know after all she is the inevitable candidate right? What a great sales pitch, Hillary is the next President, wanna donate to our charitable endeavors...wink wink. POLITICS IS THE CLINTON FAMILY BUSINESS---selling favors and access to power is the revenue generator. OLD TIME POLITICS at its finest. CLINTON=FRAUD

Through their "charitable foundations", the rich can be up to all kinds of mischief, running businesses and hiring people to perform services that may run counter to our own individual and national interests, and be, in fact, more for their own long term private self-interests. For instance, the Clinton Foundation appears to have people on the payroll who are working on HRC's campaign.

The Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation and the Clinton Foundation is allegedly spending money in Africa. How charitable or wise is their giving in fact? What could the government of the US, as well as the governments around the world, do to alleviate the problems Africans encounter on a daily basis, that would no longer necessitate foreign aid? Is our own foreign policy in Africa the source or one of the sources of their troubles?

Are the rich in other nations doing the same for us? Are they using their "charitable foundations" to feed and house our poor? Are the Saudis paying for our health care?

Why you should care when the rich funnel income into their own "charitable foundations":

It's to avoid paying taxes, which would go to pay for services that are vital to a functioning democracy. For things like our infrastructure (roads, bridges, rail lines, mass transit, dams, ports, waterways, etc.), national defense, police and fire fighting services, public health, food safety, education, environmental clean-up, natural resources (national parks, federal lands, water projects), health research, interest on the federal debt, anti poverty programs, social security, medicare, justice administration, community and regional development, veterans' benefits, federal employees' pension, foreign aid.

If the rich aren't paying for these services, you are, the burden falls to you.

The Clintons, as you know did not avoid paying taxes. They paid a higher percentage of their money to taxes than did the Obamas. You should be complaining about the Obamas then.

The Clintons were also more than twice as generous in giving to charity as the Obamas - 8.3% of income from 2000 to 2006 versus 3.8% of income for the Obamas. In no year did the Obamas match the Clintons in giving percentage - even mean Obama made $1.65 million and $980,000.

We can't include 2007 because the Clintons have given preliminary numbers while the Obamas continue to not disclose theirs.

That the Clintons' charity, from which they receive not a dime, was called the Clinton Family Foundation seems to irk you for no rational reason.

The family foundation has spent a increasing amount of money each year, and has said they spent $3 million or so in 2007.

2002 - 170,000
2003 - 313,000
2004 - 221,000
2005 - 549,000
2006 - 1,274,000
2007 - > $3 million

To StephenS-I'm sure it's unintentional, but your numbers are misleading--The Clinton's income of 109.2 million dollars is just for the years 2001 through 2006, as are their claimed charitable donations of 10.2 million dollars-They've requested an extension on their 2007 I.R.S. filing & so that year is not in the equation-We don't know how much they took in last year or how much they donated to their own little "Family Foundation"-It does however, appear as though their spirit of generosity was multiplied just before the presidential primary campaign-Obviously a mere coincidence-One other minor correction is that Obama did not seek to buy time with an extension & already released his 2007 tax returns to the public a couple of months ago-It's the Clintons who have not produced theirs-I can't imagine why-Perhaps their very, very highly paid accountants are just feeling lazy lately-

The analogy only makes sense, Stephen S., if the Clintons were living in a $100 million home and that was the average cost of housing.

It's why flat taxes and national sales taxes are a no-sell in the US.

But keep trying if your goal is to kill off the middle class, or in other words, if you want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.

If you go to http://empowertube.blogspot.com/ you will find out that the Clinton library was funded by the Saudi royal family and three Saudi businessmen. The government of Dubai, Kuwait and Qatar and duputy prime minister of Lebanon also donated $1 million or more for the museum and library.

Not surprised.
And who is on the board of that "charity?"
Several members of her campaign team.
Guess they could afford to work for the campaign for free because they have that job at the foundation that will let them miss a few work days?
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/20/us/politics/20clinton.html?hp
"In raising record sums for her campaign, Mrs. Clinton has tapped many of the foundation"s donors. At least two dozen have become "Hillraisers," each bundling $100,000 or more for her presidential bid. The early library donors, combined with their families and political action committees, have contributed at least $784,000 to Mrs. Clinton"s Senate and presidential coffers.

The foundation and Mrs. Clinton"s political campaigns have been intertwined in other ways. Terry McAuliffe, who led the foundation"s fund-raising and sits on its board, is now Mrs. Clinton"s campaign chairman and chief fund-raiser. Cheryl Mills plays a similar dual role, sitting on the foundation board and serving as the general counsel to Mrs. Clinton"s campaign. And Jay Carson recently traded a communications position at the foundation for a job as her campaign"s press secretary."

Bill Clinton is a rich pig..... He abused his power when he tried to seduce young impressionable woman working in the whitehouse, with his wife practically in the next room. Bill and Hillary are a disfunctional couple. no matter how much money they have, the've lost the respect of many people.

I continue to be amazed at the liberal capacity to both turn on the Clintons, and to disregard the striking similarities between your arguments now and those which motivated the republicans eight years ago.

Either the repubs were right then, and libs ignored the truth with unthinking dedication to their "cause" (similar to Yankees fans hating Red Sox fans, for example), or the repubs were wrong then, but managed to "predict" the future by attacking the Clintons' character with their "vast, right-wing conspiracy."

Or, Hill is just a sweet lady, who cries at the right time, and who wishes her country well. But, I don't think anyone really believes that!

So what? Isn't their own charity a charity? It is common practice for non for profit organizations not to give all their donations away immediately. There are so many factors that are involved including 3-5 year donation plans that all othese organizations have.

You may want to discredit the church because of some of the things the Rev. Wright said, but the fact is a church is more than it's pastor. The congregation consisted of individuals from all backgrounds. From Doctors to the sick, from lawyers to past criminals, from the elderly to the young of all races. That money Obama donated did not go into the pocket of the Rev. It went into legitimate issues such and AIDS. So before you try to undermine the good things done by this church, i would like to know how much money you've donated to a charity, or have you even served your community in anyway.

Nothing wrong about being multi-millionaires, or giving your foundation all the charity money to advance social courses. But everything is wrong when the same millionaire is involved in back room back deals with union busting Colombian Gov trade deals while pretending to be the champion of the low income blue collar, barely surviving workers of PA.
