Clinton Charitable Contributions Went To Clinton Foundation

The New York Times notes that most of the Clinton's charitable contributions went to their own foundation, which has yet to give away much of the money:

During that time, the Clintons paid $33.8 million in federal taxes and claimed deductions for $10.2 million in charitable contributions. The contributions went to a family foundation run by the Clintons that has given away only about half of the money they put into it, and most of that was last year, after Mrs. Clinton declared her candidacy.

Looking at the 2006 Tax return for the foundation, it appears that the sole officers of the Foundations are the Clintons: Bill is the President, Hillary is the Secretary and Treasurer and Chelsea is the Director. The managers of the fund are Bill and Hillary.

The Clintons take charitable deductions for more than $10 million since 2000, and then they pay it into their personal charitable trust. Then, $5 million from their personal charitable trust is distributed as Hillary begins her presidential campaign. My question is: Who received the donations? Also, Bill Clinton was paid over $50 million to make speeches since the year 2000. This includes Hillary's term in the U.S. Senate. More than $50 million ends up in Hillary's tax returns. Who else in this country gets $50 million or more for making speeches? Who paid $50 million for these speeches?

Did you even READ the article? Clinton's charity organization is a real, legal thing that does real charitable work. They GAVE the money away to this organization, just like Bill Gates does with his, or any of hundreds of wealthy people do with their own charitable organizations. And this charity has already given away half of the money it's raised, which seems pretty good to me (I've heard of big charities actually giving a lot less after expenses). So it's not a crock at all... "now we know" as you would say.

It's their money. How dare you tell them how they can choose to use any of it to help the needy. Do you honestly think that all needs are met fully and completely by existing organizations? Without researching, tell us exactly how much money the Clinton-GHWB team raised for victims of the tsunami, and how much they raised for Katrina victims. You know so much about them, those numbers must be on the tip of your tongue.

FYI, among the many very wealthy people who have their own foundations for giving, Bill & Melinda Gates (Microsoft) and Oprah run their charitable donations through their own personal foundations, as well. Let's hear you trash al of them with the same passion. If you don't like it, lobby your elected officials to change the laws surrounding it.

if you read it you will see that 92.9% of their expenses for that year was what was spent on their charitable programs. they spent over 86 million in 2006 for their programs

One of the issues that has yet to get the scrutiny it deserves is how the Clintons have used their foundation as a campaign tool in the months leading up to the election.

The foundation apparently spent much of the money it has actually gotten around to spending, on lavish "conferences" in which attendees, many of whom were potential election donors or supporters, were put up in luxury hotel rooms and lavishly wined and dined. At New York prices, this must have cost the foundation millions.
