In his books, speeches and campaign commercials, Sen. Barack Obama often harks back to his days as a civil rights attorney.

It is fundamental to his autobiography, displayed on his campaign website and woven into his appeals for votes. In one of his television ads leading up to the South Carolina primary, Obama recalled "working as a civil rights attorney to make sure that everybody's vote counted."

(Conclusion)
Her only hope was a quick and successful end to the Invasion AND the war. That, of course, didn't happen. Once she made that vote, nothing she's done or could have done would save her.

Given her natural constituency, given the competence level of George Bush and the ideological mindset of his administration and Party, she, in effect, rolled the dice with that vote and came up snake eyes.

Nothing else really matters.

I disagree to this extent.

She came out strongly in favor of the war along with Bill, "I've had the perspective from the other side of Pennsyvania Ave..." And she voted against the Levin amendment that could have at least slowed the rush to war. And she has consistently refused to back timetables and has yet to say she was sorry for her vote. As recently as the last state of the union speech she gave Bush the standing O for Iraq and has stated as recently as the Texas primary that we have given "freedom" to the Iraqi's and that it was up to them to take advantage of it, as if ethnic cleansing and total chaos were the equivelant of freedom. Now she is trying to portray herself as the populist champion who was against NAFTA and against the war and against welfare reform but was instrumental in bringing peace to Northern Ireland, Bosnia and creating a budget surplus.

The vote on the Iraq was bad, painful even. It's all of the other stuff on top of it that makes her unelectable.

With all the back and forth going on [and Ive certainly been a part of it] about Obama's resume, specifically, and the comparisons between Obama and Hillary, in general, there are some things that are evident:

Obama's resume is pretty much what we would expect given Obama's long standing profile. There aren't any bombshells and one would be hard pressed to find anything from this nonstory.

Two, Hillary isn't being hurt by her sense of entitlement, her belittling of Obama, her misrepresentation of the facts, her inside baseball type way of dealing with opponents or, even, Obama's sleekly efficient panther of a campaign so much as the one thing that many said would be a problem: Her vote against the war.

Take that away from the equation and, I think, Hillary wins Iowa. The fact that she voted for a war that any hard-core democrat could see was fishy raised the old spectors of "amoral" triangulation and no-different-from-republicanism DLC centrism. The invasion quickly going south forced her to start backing and filling and that evoked the issue of trust. The anti-war heart of the Party had the bone she provided them and they've never let go. That core, in turn, has energised the rest of the Party and it's Katy bar the Door, here comes the perfect storm vis a vis Hillary's presidential aspirations.

Sorry, paragraph 3, line 4 should read "Her vote FOR the war" instead of "against"

My apologies

Here's another case of trying to create a story where there is no story. First fews paragraphs lead you to believe Sen. Obama didn't do the things he said he did, then if you get to the "end" and realize that's not the case he actually did do the things he said he did -- just another hack reporter in need of story but didn't have one.

That's exactly what I was going to post. This is another example of creating a really good teasing headline and picking apart syllables. "Well it wasn't all about civil rights"...I'm sure he had other things to take care of as an attorney and I'm sure he did much more for civil rights than either of the other two candidates. Please. Another weak attempt to get people riled up.

We need to hear more about those letters Sen O wrote on State stationary that enabled millions of government $$ to go to his slum lord pal Rezko. That's the nugget in this article and i am sure it's going to be a big gold one for the GOP.

naturally i wonder where is the Hsu story? He is in jail because he committed crime raising money for the Clintons. and where is the Pail vs. Clinton story? Another fund raising campaign crime. seems even bigger stories the GOP will use to smash the Clintons.

Neither will I! As a former Angeleno it pains me to think the Times has become as trivial as the Daily Breeze. I'm in utter shock to learn that a new lawyer only litigated sometimes mixed in with research and day to day law firm work that ANY junior attorney would be expected to do. That derelict!!!!! How dare he try to earn a living. I don't recall hearing about his representing Wal-Mart or Tyson but he may have been busy ducking that sniper fire at work!

The financial aspects of practice require that someone who does something like CR law to have other areas of practice to allow the lights to be kept on. By in large, he did as he said within the parameters of working at a firm. Polished his resume? Sure did. And the 1 in 1000 of YOU out there who have never polished your resume can all pat yourselves on the back and feel good about not voting for the only candidate that might be able to save the Constitution while basking in your false sense of moral superiority. He did as he said he did . . . he fought more for the "little man" as much or more than the "big man" and when he did it looks like he performed his advocacy with the zeal and thoroughness required by law regardless of who the client was. And here is a dirty little secret: Lawyers OFTEN do not like their clients or think them innocent, but until Bush started screwing with the 4th Amendment, everyone is due a defense. Even Bush, when he is eventually tried for war crimes, should have a defender at bar. It's a core concept upon which this country is built.

There is a distinction many of you seem to be missing. There is a difference between polishing and embellishing. It's the same difference between the concept of spin and outright lying: favorable language vs. fabrication. Compared to most attorneys, this guy is an angel.

This was a crummy hack job in 2004 when he traded on his "relationship" with Obama and scrounged a few grumbles from Chicago hacks who felt Obama had jumped ahead of the line.

Obama's signature ethics reform bill was passed in 1998 and the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2000, under Republican controlled legislatures.

Obama chaired the Health and Human services committee in 2003-2004 which accounts for his sponsorship of most of the legislation passed in those years.

The work that Obama did to secure the video interrogation bill against vehement opposition is well documented. Hendon's claim that he took the ball to the 1 yard line is risible.

The story about Obama gaining his senate seat by legal technicality, challenging nominating petitions and so betraying his mentor Alice Palmer completely distorts the story. Obama was encouraged to run by Palmer who was herself running in a special election for US Congress. Days before the filing deadline (in December) and just a few months before the primary which would surely be determinative in his Democratic district, she lost the special and decided to reclaim her state senate seat. Obama refused to step aside and she was unable to gather sufficient valid signatures to get on the ballot. Challenging nominating petitions is standard procedure in Illinois politics and while Obama has indicated he regrets having displaced a distinguished progressive politician, he was certainly entitled to pursue a race he had invested so much in already.

Did you actually read the entire story? I didn't think so. He embellished nothing.

I see that reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, so let me help you - 70% spent on civil rights and voting law, 30% spent on everything else a junior attorney needs to learn. What stuck in Barack's head? The 70% that was helping others. What an asshole! To derive satisfaction from helping others.

PS: That legislation he sponsored happened to help former clients is immaterial as well. The bill was widely regarded as the right thing to do on both sides of the aisle by the time it was passed. That former clients happened to be in the low-income housing arena is not relevant. The idea was to create more low-income housing, which the law accomplished.

Obama voted "present" 130 times in the State Senate, refusing to take a stand.

You can't do that as the Pres.

"Obama voted "present" 130 times in the State Senate, refusing to take a stand."

Yes, which was typical in the IL Senate, for tactical reasons, or did you just leave that part out for drama purposes.

You obviously don't live in the state of Illinois. Voting "present" is a legal tactic , similar to a filibuster.
One would vote "present" in opposition to parts of proposed legislation.

Legislation in this country is never as simple as voting for one issue, sometimes the opposing party will complicate a new bill with a poison pill, or load it up with amendments that distort the new proposed law beyond something that someone might want to support.

Again, its a legal tactic.

Let's compare:
Barack -- Editor of Harvard Law Review
HRC -- Flunked first bar exam
Barack -- Worked for small firm with civil-rights reputation by choice
HRC -- Worked for large law factory with emphasis on (often questionable) billable hours after connections procured her the job
Barack -- Went directly into public service after practicing law
HRC -- Hung around at law factory and learned how to get rich quick trading cattle futures until hubby elected president
Barack -- No evidence that he hid billing records from his firm
HRC -- Not so much
Barack -- Actually lived in Illinois for five years before running for state senate
HRC -- Carpetbagged to NY with sole intention of launching presidential bid

If the criterion here is who was the better lawyer and that criterion is measured on the pitbull/sleaze scale, HRC wins hands down.

I'll take pit bull every time. Obama's halo is slipping and it must be Hillary's fault. Check Obama for the bad judgement as a state senator by helping the Davis-Rezko slumlords secure state and city funds for their "non profit" land developement company. You are running out of excuses for Barry Obama. mccain will be digging through everthing he has ever gotten away with. Obama must be vetted. peace.
