Thin Intel

CNET News:

During a keynote speech at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, an Intel executive brandished a Netbook that looked Air-thin. Will inexpensive Linux Netbooks be a poor man's MacBook Air?

Most of the photos to date of upcoming Netbooks are ho-hum designs, engineered to be inexpensive yet practical for users such as young schoolchildren. But some upcoming designs look intriguing--and extremely thin.

"This Netbook is running Linux...As you see, this doesn't mean an ugly design. It's a really nice-looking, stylish design," said Dadi Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Mobility Group, when waving a very-thin-looking Netbook at the audience during his keynote at IDF.

Is this thing any good?

Here's your first clue - the headline of the story: "Is This The POORMAN'S MacBook Air?"

Looking forward to the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros which are now going to be redesigned with some of the great MacBookAir features.

He's right. As far as its design, it isn't ugly.

It's FUGLY.

I hope this one bombs because it's designed to compete with the computers it promised it would not compete against

Since I didn't edit the last post before I posted I will clarify. PC's are junk. Macs run better software and that is what we are willing to pay for.

Unfortunately from our politics to our technology Americans have always reaffirmed that crap is good enough for me!

Macs and PCs are the same. They both have hardware based on the X-86 architecture. It's Windows that makes PCs suck so bad and it is Apple's operating system that makes the difference. Mac OSX is based on the open source Unix kernel known as BSD. Linux is also an open source kernel. A kernel consists of the bits of code that run the computer's hardware. Linux is every bit as solid and resistant to viruses as Mac OSX, perhaps even more so. This is good news. It means that laptops will soon be better, cheaper, safer and people will have real choice when it comes to computers rather than relying upon the whims of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
This new choice for our computing needs we have slowly been witnessing over the last few years is all thanks to the efforts of thousands of individuals around the world who work to develop open source software, like the Firefox web browser (used by millions to surf the internet) and Linux and Apache (used to host most of the world's websites).

Obama and McCain are the same.

That's easier to believe than a PC being anywhere near equal to a Mac.

It won't beat the Airbook? Why? Because PC makers haven't figured out that it's not the hardware but the software that macs the Mac so special. As long as this new machine is running Windows it will be a piece of crap. Literally a cheap piece of crap.

It's not running Windows - it's running Linux.

Typical apple moron, always talking in absolutes. No room for anyone else. Why don't you let people use whatever they want to use?

You PC guys are the ones who own the market share. Personally, I hope the the Mac market share doesn't increase too much...then, just maybe someone would actually succeed making the first virus for OS X.

Is it odd that Intel supplies the processors for both?
