Mark Penn, who resigned over the weekend as the Clinton campaign's chief strategist, went into full damage control mode on Monday, hosting a conference call with Burson Marsteller's managing directors to persuade them that the fallout from his resignation was both overblown and would soon pass.

Peppered with questions from colleagues -- one mentioned her "pretty panicked client," another asked bluntly, "Ultimately did you think that it was the best thing for the company [to work for Clinton's campaign]?" -- Penn insisted that "the situation has played itself out."

But he confirmed that while his title with the campaign had changed -- and his work load would undoubtedly decrease -- he still would play a direct advisory role for Clinton.

"I think you've heard that I made the decision to step down as chief strategist of the Clinton campaign. Penn Schoen and Berland is going to continue to poll for it and I'll continue to play a role advising Senator Clinton and former President Clinton as well as the rest of the leadership of the campaign," he said.

Later, he added: "The title, the position of chief strategist tended to be one that drew a tremendous amount of attention. And, number two, yes, I will have more time. We will continue - Penn and Schoen will continue to do the polling and I will be advising, but the net of it will still be that I will have more time than I otherwise would have had so that definitely is going to be the case."

The Huffington Post was able to listen to the roughly 25 minute call, in which Penn defended his decision to meet with Colombia's ambassador to the U.S. to discuss a free trade agreement that Sen. Clinton opposes. Told that junior staff members were wondering why he would risk the appearance of a conflict of interest, the Burson CEO responded by saying the meeting was merely a "courtesy call," and indicated that he had held similar meetings before.

"It's an interesting question," he said. "As I said, it was someone I worked for -- remember, we had the contract for a year before it was even about the free trade agreement, and periodically, maybe, I would have a check-in breakfast every six months. So it did not catch - it's interesting, because somebody working on the account was well versed in politics and it just didn't occur to anybody. I would have to say that it just didn't get flagged."

Suggesting that he had been the victim of a double standard, Penn cited Charlie Black's presence on Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. Black had served as chair of BKSH & Associates, a lobbying firm associated with Burson-Marsteller, up until leaving the post in March 2008.

Story continues below

"It is interesting Charlie Black was the chief strategist for McCain and he left only after McCain got the nomination. So I have to look back and see whether or not - in the end, hindsight is foresight, but I think it's a question," said Penn. "If you look at the McCain-Charlie Black experience versus mine - obviously, the press just gave considerable more attention to what goes on overt at the Clinton campaign."

On Sunday evening, the Clinton campaign announced that Penn would be stepping down from his role as the campaign's chief strategist following the fallout from his meeting with the Colombia ambassador. Since then, however, there had been debate over exactly what involvement the pollster would have with the campaign. On Monday, Marc Ambinder reported that Penn would "remain a key member of the campaign's senior staff."

Later in the day, Ben Smith quoted an anonymous Clinton aide saying: "Its a change. He went from being in charge to being one of the important voices."

On the conference call, Penn addressed this issue early on, not deviating much from the campaign's talking points.

"While I will continue to advise the Clintons on the campaign, I obviously will have in this other role more time for what I do best, working here," said Penn

The call was meant to address "particularly, I think, what the message should be in our conversations with our clients, our prospects, [and] our staff." Saying he had three call this morning from prospective clients now eager to sign up with the firm, Penn pledged that the controversial meeting would "cycle through the news as these things do."

"There will probably be another day," he said, "but there really is only a one two three to the story but not really much more."

The Clintons didn't fire Penn because he's got serious dirt on them.

They still owe him $2.5 Million. My guess is he's going to be stiffed just like all those small businesses in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Hey Marko...

This is supposed to be a 2 or 3 day story. You wish.

Do you think the voters in PA and IN will just forget about it, Mark? Your boss surely knew you were working on the Columbian trade deal, which she claims to oppose. The only reason why you're "out" is because you got busted and you are a complete embarrassment to Clinton as you lobby for the same trade agreement that Bush is pushing.

Just another example, she's Bush Lite. Never saw a trade agreement she didn't love, never passes on an opportunity to lie about it.

I hope you stick around, because every time your name comes up it's another reminder of how the Clintons will say and do anything to get elected. And of course, it's another reason why Clinton has blown a 20% polling lead in PA, a state she had to win big and is now in danger of losing.

Obama should do us all a favor and go for the jugular with ads about Clinton and her support for free trade agreements. This could be the sledge hammer that we've been waiting for. I dont think you can rely upon the media to carry this message to effect. He'll have to do it with ads.

I agree frappe. And the ads need to focus on what it means to be a union organizer in Columbia (i.e., it's practically signing your own death warrant). Columbia has at the very least allowed, and probably sponsored, crackdowns on labor unions that have been violent to the point of death for many members and organizers. The fact that Bush, Penn and possibly Clinton want to get in bed with these murderous thugs on a trade deal simply defies belief.

I agree. I love his message of transformative politics, but he needs to show some closing power. He needs to put enough pressure on the Unions in PA over this Penn issue to get her Union supporters to flip sides. That just might give him a victory in PA and put the final nail in her coffin.

I completely agree. I hope we can lobby his campaign to go after this in a serious way.

This race just can't go on much longer. I would love for Obama to deliver a decisive blow in PA and finish off HRC once and for all. Then we dems can unite and concentrate on shutting down McCain and the right-wing smear machine once and for all.

One of the best judges as to who will be the best president, is to look at the running of a candidate's campaign. Obama has run a smooth campaign with very little shake up. He has stayed on message, and refrained from slinging mud. For example, after the Rev Wright story, Obama could easily have pointed out that HIllary's former pastor was indicted on charges of child molestation. or her involvement in "the fellowship." He did not. He has never gone to her level of slinging the mud, and is to be commended. He has surrounded himself with a great team, and they work together, unlike Clinton's campaign staff. She has mismanaged her money, and even left a trail of unpaid bills. If she can't run a campaign well, how could she run our country?

Talk about a double standard! Clinton was the one who contacted Canada. This is not about Hillary bashing. I used to be a supporter but now she embarrasses me.

Quoted from a Canadian newspaper:

"At the end of an extended conversation, Brodie was asked about remarks aimed by the Democratic candidates at Ohio's anti-NAFTA voters that carried serious economic implications for Canada.

Since 75 per cent of Canadian exports go to the U.S., Obama and Clinton's musings about reopening the North American free-trade pact had caused some concern.

Brodie downplayed those concerns.

"Quite a few people heard it," said one source in the room.

"He said someone from (Hillary) Clinton's campaign is telling the embassy to take it with a grain of salt. . . That someone called us and told us not to worry."

Government officials did not deny the conversation took place."

Before any Clintonite attacks me for this, here's the link to the story in the Canadian newspaper:

This is the correction to the story that the mainstream press ignored. I was surprised when they ignored the correction, but they were probably too embarrassed or maybe it happened during one of the periods when Hillary's campaign was making a lot of noise about unfair coverage.

Obama may have won Ohio if they had gotten it right. However, they got it right this time and it will end Hillary's campaign in PA. This is the last straw for rust belt residents.

And he definitely would have won the popular vote in Texas, too, had Rush Lamebrain not encouraged his army of ditsy dittoheads in "Operation Chaos" to vote for Clinton. They provided the margin that she needed to eek out a victory in the popular vote. Do a majority of Americans understand that?

Clinton Tax Lessons - Wall Street Journal
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120752549042393619.html?mod=opinion_main_review_and_outlooks
"Meanwhile, the Clintons also made liberal use of the charitable deduction, claiming $10.2 million in charitable giving over the eight years. Intriguingly, nearly all the donations went to the Clinton Family Foundation, which has disbursed only half the money. The Clintons can thus use the foundation for, er, strategic giving, such as the $100,000 it donated last year to a local South Carolina library – the day after Mrs. Clinton debated in that key primary state. There are other examples of such politically targeted philanthropy, and it's worth noting that most of the foundation's disbursements came only after Mrs. Clinton announced her Presidential run."

Looks like that issue will get a healthy run in the media - Hillary using the Clinton Foundation contributions to make primary voters "happier" with the Clintons as they trot around the country.

The longer we watch this campaign, the sicker it gets .. kind of like the Clinton White House years.

*********** NEWS FLASH *****************

Camp Clinton continues to melt down. At the rate Billary is going, she is going to be the butt of a LOT of jokes, just like her dopey husband - but with no anger management issues.

Throw in the towel Billary, you are toast. How ANYONE could blow their election hopes as badly as you have is beyond me. You are about to lose to the most unaccomplished, no-name in the history of American politics. Obviously, you are a Cubs fan.

Helluva job Billary, helluva job!!!

And all Americans have to do to get the scoop on all of the crap foistered upon the American people is to look at history in the context of the recent past and the present. We don't have to look anything up. The Republicans have made life miserable for most Americans in a very real sense in the "here and now". It has become part of our "life experience".

I have trouble accepting an article by a Bushite like Peter Wehner who served in the Bush White House as director of the office of strategic initiatives. I don't doubt that Obama second-guessed his opposition to the war. I was fully opposed to the war before it was waged and as things were portrayed as getting better in MSM, I almost bought the rhetoric that we would be cruel to leave Iraq in such chaos. However, I came to my senses as information surfaced about how many Iraqis have been killed since the occupation (millions accoriding to non-MSM), the number of US troops killed, and that the majority of Iraqis want us out, and went back to my strong opposition.

Obama is still by far the lesser of three evils. This article is about supposed flip-flopping on Obama's part, yet we have McCain who has accepted nearly every Bush policy he once opposed (ie. tax cuts for the richest) and Hillary who bends the truth about her positions and experience (NAFTA during the Clinton White House years and Northern Ireland, to name a few).

I don't argue that Obama has a few problems in his record and his past, but how is his record so much worse than the other two viable candidates for President that you refuse to vote for him and will instead embrace a candidate that has far more skeletons in their closet?

Amazing how Senator Clinton can act shocked that Penn has been lobbying for the Colombians when the issue has been debated on the blogs for over a year now.
What exactly was Penn selling if not access to the next (at that time) presumptive candidate for US President?
Here’s one more example of HRC trying to have it both ways.
While being the candidate of the big money DLC segment of the Democratic Party, she continues trying to play a populist for the cameras.
Ms. Clinton was pro-NAFTA before it was in her interest to pretend to oppose the exporting of US Jobs and importing of cheap foreign labor. In much the same way, her healthcare plan opposed the insurance stranglehold before she began courting donations from AFLAC, BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD, and AMERICA'S HEALTH INSURANCE PLANS PAC. Now she is all for what amounts to government subsidization while touting the fact that everyone will be required to have insurance.
The fact of the matter is that we don’t know where Ms. Clinton stands on any issue.
It all seems to depend on whom she’s talking to at the time.

Got to disagree with you when you say, "The fact of the matter is that we don"t know where Ms. Clinton stands on any issue."

You just portrayed her as a senator - believe it or not. This is why her, Obama, and John boy are not really qualified for anything other than a city dog catcher. They tend to take multiple positions on any issue in order to make themselves for adaptable for any group that will throw money at them for their agendas. Not hard to figure out, it's been happening at an alarming rate since 1992.

In the immortal words of Rush Limbaugh, "Follow the money".

Billary is nothing more than a predictably lost politician that has done nothing with her time in Congress, except get rich off donations.

Perhaps the Khemer Rouge want to make a come back and need another venal scumbag to help run their PR operation. How about getting Blackwater to pay all your bills, weasel?

This very scenario is why John Edwards was such an appealing candidate, our government has been outsourced to the Mark Penn's of the world, our tax dollars are subsidizing a black market of wheelers and dealers looking out for their own best interests as they sell off our futures (souls?) to God knows who.

And this very scenario is why Hillary Clinton cannot be trusted with the presidency, she is perfectly fine with the current arrangement, says lobbyists do good work in the name of the people she does - once again she is wildly off the mark.

It's getting very near "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore" territory.

All you Hilary supporters and donors.

Take a hard look at the fat dude above.

That's where your hard earned money has been going into his pockets.
Why?

Because Hilary R. Clinton, does not have the judegement and leadership skills to run an effective and disciplined campaign. I fear to even think what economic disaster she could bring to befall the US where she ever to become president. I do not say this out of spite, but a genuine heartfelt concern that Hilary would be disastrous for our economy. she has a checkered history of failure and gross ineptitude - her only call to glory being a war cry eliciting what a fighter she is.

Gergen is a respected journalist. However, he is also the same journalist who tried to defend Clinton's "opposition" to NAFTA back when she was First Lady. He is the ONLY journalist to attempt this. Even her White House records don't bear this out.

Even respected journalists are human. Wolf Blitzer (in the tank for Clinton) and Chris Matthews (in the tank for Obama) are just two examples.

I don't need MSM analysis to tell me that there's a huge problem with the chief strategist and chief pollster of a Presidential campaign being PAID by a foreign government to actively lobby in favor of a free trade agreement that the campaign's candidate has publicly opposed. You shouldn't need that analysis either.
