Mark Penn, who resigned over the weekend as the Clinton campaign's chief strategist, went into full damage control mode on Monday, hosting a conference call with Burson Marsteller's managing directors to persuade them that the fallout from his resignation was both overblown and would soon pass.

Peppered with questions from colleagues -- one mentioned her "pretty panicked client," another asked bluntly, "Ultimately did you think that it was the best thing for the company [to work for Clinton's campaign]?" -- Penn insisted that "the situation has played itself out."

But he confirmed that while his title with the campaign had changed -- and his work load would undoubtedly decrease -- he still would play a direct advisory role for Clinton.

"I think you've heard that I made the decision to step down as chief strategist of the Clinton campaign. Penn Schoen and Berland is going to continue to poll for it and I'll continue to play a role advising Senator Clinton and former President Clinton as well as the rest of the leadership of the campaign," he said.

Later, he added: "The title, the position of chief strategist tended to be one that drew a tremendous amount of attention. And, number two, yes, I will have more time. We will continue - Penn and Schoen will continue to do the polling and I will be advising, but the net of it will still be that I will have more time than I otherwise would have had so that definitely is going to be the case."

The Huffington Post was able to listen to the roughly 25 minute call, in which Penn defended his decision to meet with Colombia's ambassador to the U.S. to discuss a free trade agreement that Sen. Clinton opposes. Told that junior staff members were wondering why he would risk the appearance of a conflict of interest, the Burson CEO responded by saying the meeting was merely a "courtesy call," and indicated that he had held similar meetings before.

"It's an interesting question," he said. "As I said, it was someone I worked for -- remember, we had the contract for a year before it was even about the free trade agreement, and periodically, maybe, I would have a check-in breakfast every six months. So it did not catch - it's interesting, because somebody working on the account was well versed in politics and it just didn't occur to anybody. I would have to say that it just didn't get flagged."

Suggesting that he had been the victim of a double standard, Penn cited Charlie Black's presence on Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. Black had served as chair of BKSH & Associates, a lobbying firm associated with Burson-Marsteller, up until leaving the post in March 2008.

"It is interesting Charlie Black was the chief strategist for McCain and he left only after McCain got the nomination. So I have to look back and see whether or not - in the end, hindsight is foresight, but I think it's a question," said Penn. "If you look at the McCain-Charlie Black experience versus mine - obviously, the press just gave considerable more attention to what goes on overt at the Clinton campaign."

On Sunday evening, the Clinton campaign announced that Penn would be stepping down from his role as the campaign's chief strategist following the fallout from his meeting with the Colombia ambassador. Since then, however, there had been debate over exactly what involvement the pollster would have with the campaign. On Monday, Marc Ambinder reported that Penn would "remain a key member of the campaign's senior staff."

Later in the day, Ben Smith quoted an anonymous Clinton aide saying: "Its a change. He went from being in charge to being one of the important voices."

On the conference call, Penn addressed this issue early on, not deviating much from the campaign's talking points.

"While I will continue to advise the Clintons on the campaign, I obviously will have in this other role more time for what I do best, working here," said Penn

The call was meant to address "particularly, I think, what the message should be in our conversations with our clients, our prospects, [and] our staff." Saying he had three call this morning from prospective clients now eager to sign up with the firm, Penn pledged that the controversial meeting would "cycle through the news as these things do."

"There will probably be another day," he said, "but there really is only a one two three to the story but not really much more."

We can tell a lot of what kind of person Hilary is by the people she surrounds herself with.

No wonder her support amongs the public is dropping every day as they learn more about who she really is, instead of just basing their support for her based on name recognition, gender or colour (though people who support her on those last two points are so narrow minded and stupid, they will support her come what may).

It's time for a new and enlightened voting public. Away with these scum bags in politics.

Tell me, what mental majesty could this group of idiots possess which would make clients want to pay them millions of dollars for anything?

This story is so depressing. Why isn't the media covering this more? When Obama's aid was accused by the HRC campaign of giving the wink win to the Canadian govenrment (a false story by the way), HRC went hammer and tongs after Obama. It likely cost him a victory in Ohio.

Penn hasn't even been properly fired, just moved out of the public eye so he can wield his dark magic in secrett What he did was far worse than anything Goolsbee was accused of. He is a paid political strategist and a paid political lobbyist with a very obvious conflict of interest. It is clear to me that he's out for no one but himself.

Seems like HRC attracts people like herself---people only out for themselves. Is this the sort of government we want people? This same ole same ole sickening revolving door where the boundaries between government and lobbyists are blurred into indistinction. It's called corruption and we need a clear out of this sort of thing once and for all.

Well said. Like you, I'm troubled by the media's lack of emphasis on a story that exposes Clinton as perhaps a fraud on issues involving free trade agreements. It's especially significant insofar as much of her support comes from those most affected by these free trade agreements.

The media should be all over this story as they were with Obama on what turned out to be a bogus Canadian NAFTA story. It's a double standard.

And where are the stories concerning the renewed violence in Iraq? Iraq has become the least reported of stories on mainstream television news of late. Is the media going easy on the Republicans for the presidential election? Do they think we don't notice or don't care?

And where's the focus on McCain's gaffes on Iraq? If it was anyone else, it would have dominated the news for weeks. Here we have this so-called "expert" on foreign policy and Iraq making statements that reflect a serious misunderstanding of the forces at work in Iraq and Iran. Are these just more attempts to mislead the public as Bush and Cheney did for years? But McCain's "misstatements" barely get a mention.

We are now beginning to see the media revert to its "pro Republican" genealogical beginnings. They do it in every election cycle. Usually though, they don't go into Republican overdrive until after the conventions.

Frappe: Not only as you discuss above, as I said yesterday, I believe this story on Penn was timely released to create a diversion in the MSM so that the Clinton tax returns and that BIG story would diminish. As you can see on any MSM station and even the newspapers, nary a word has been spoken since Friday afternoon when they released those documents (they knew, beyond a doubt, that no one would be paying attention). It is all the "timing" people, it really is all in the timing!!!

On CNN this morning, Hillary brought up the 'misinformation' regarding the NAFTA/Canada/Obama-aide issue again. Naturally, John Roberts just let it go unchecked.

The problem for years has been that the MSM doesen’t know what TRUTH is anymore! They determine beforehand what to cover up and what to let the public see. And the public swallows it hook, line and sinker. For decades, the MSM has not spoken on any level of TRUTH; they only give us their opinions, comments, bigotry, racism, and ineuendo and want us to believe every falsehood they spew. If we, as a nation, do not turn off our MSM stations and search out the truthTRUTH in news each day, we will remain stupid or ill-informed about all important issues. Thank God we have the net so if we can learn to stop being so lazy, we can research the important topics of each day unlike other countries who don't have this luxury.
If lazy people really buy what the MSM has to report, they need to know they are only purchasing garbage and not TRUTH. Furthermore, do they really want to pay the salaries of these MSM employees?

So correct, sad but true. They have stopped reporting on this story, period. Too much for the public to handle I guess and would completely disrupt the political machine in motion.

She will be out right after North Carolina. Her big money backers are going to be pissed. She won't be VP, either. Obama doesn't want to carry that baggage around for the next 4-8 years.

Just like everything else that Penn's advised the Clintons about, he's wrong about this thing, "playing itself out." It hasn't. Not yet.

I hope he keeps giving them advice. I hope they keep paying him his $4 mill-a-month salary.

I hope they write a shitload of checks to themselves to fund their brain-dead campaign. Maybe then they can go into bankruptcy proceedings, and have to deal with the consequences of the banking legislation which Hillary introduced and voted for in 2005 -- the laws that make it easier for banks to get their money out of people buried in credit card debt, and harder for individuals to crawl out from under it.

Stay in the race, Hillary, Bill!

Don't change a thing! You're doing a great job!!!

So?

Meaning, Penn is IN AND OUT of the Clinton-campaign at the same time? Like, Hillary is FOR AND AGAINST the NAFTA-treaty at the same time? And while she pledges to accept the DNC's rules concerning the delegates of Michigan and Florida NOT being seated at the convention at Denver - while she AT THE SAME TIME fights vigorously to get those illegally elected delegates SEATED ANYWAY, which she fradulently collected there by campaigning, and putting her names on the ballots against the agreemant, which she herself SIGNED AND ACCEPTED?

Am I the only one to see a pattern developing here? Anyone?

Ah - I see: Words have no meaning. That's the pattern. Like: "utter and forget".

With Penn, and now Wolfson and Ickes all tied into the Colombia FTA deal, it seems we have a story that is scaring the bejezus out of everyone on Capitol hill. Now Bush has pushed the agreement on fast track before it all blows up. I doubt the press will overtly connect the dots on this, to not piss off the mucks on the hill. See Politico article: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9435.html

Isn't it curious how, all of a sudden, Bush is pushing for passage of yet another free trade agreement?

Did Penn know something was up therefore precipitating his trip to Columbia? Do the American people really understand or fully grasp how disastrous to the middle class and our way of life that free trade agreements, globalization and outsourcing will be and have been? Without a middle class, we will have no economic engine. The unions will disappear. We'll have a very small, but very wealthy "upper class" and an extremely large, but very poor, "lower class". We'll become ripe for a fascist police state. Bush has already prepared the preliminaries with his Patriot Act and the emergency powers it brings to bear.

I don't mean to sound paranoid and, at the same time, to the casual observer, I know that I do. But it is with just cause and sound logic that I've come to these conclusions.

Penn is in la-la land if he thinks this story will blow over 1,2,3.... The union bosses are enraged and those pro-Clinton AND pro-Obama won't let this this go. PA could very well go Obama now.

She won't fire Wolfson - because she hasn't fired Penn. He's not out - just not "chief strategist". However, even in Penn's own words, he's still a "key advisor".

The fact that this clown can take Hillary from inevitable to feral and still have people who want to pay him big bucks to represent them tells you how completely checked out the leadership class in this country is. He is like the failed CEO who bounces from one Fortune 500 company to the next turning profits into loses and then bailing out with a platinum parachute. For all of you who gave your hard earned cash to Hillarys campaign take a long look who really benefits from all your dedication. What a sad state of affairs.
