Penn

Mark Penn, who resigned over the weekend as the Clinton campaign's chief strategist, went into full damage control mode on Monday, hosting a conference call with Burson Marsteller's managing directors to persuade them that the fallout from his resignation was both overblown and would soon pass.

Peppered with questions from colleagues -- one mentioned her "pretty panicked client," another asked bluntly, "Ultimately did you think that it was the best thing for the company [to work for Clinton's campaign]?" -- Penn insisted that "the situation has played itself out."

But he confirmed that while his title with the campaign had changed -- and his work load would undoubtedly decrease -- he still would play a direct advisory role for Clinton.

"I think you've heard that I made the decision to step down as chief strategist of the Clinton campaign. Penn Schoen and Berland is going to continue to poll for it and I'll continue to play a role advising Senator Clinton and former President Clinton as well as the rest of the leadership of the campaign," he said.

Later, he added: "The title, the position of chief strategist tended to be one that drew a tremendous amount of attention. And, number two, yes, I will have more time. We will continue - Penn and Schoen will continue to do the polling and I will be advising, but the net of it will still be that I will have more time than I otherwise would have had so that definitely is going to be the case."

The Huffington Post was able to listen to the roughly 25 minute call, in which Penn defended his decision to meet with Colombia's ambassador to the U.S. to discuss a free trade agreement that Sen. Clinton opposes. Told that junior staff members were wondering why he would risk the appearance of a conflict of interest, the Burson CEO responded by saying the meeting was merely a "courtesy call," and indicated that he had held similar meetings before.

"It's an interesting question," he said. "As I said, it was someone I worked for -- remember, we had the contract for a year before it was even about the free trade agreement, and periodically, maybe, I would have a check-in breakfast every six months. So it did not catch - it's interesting, because somebody working on the account was well versed in politics and it just didn't occur to anybody. I would have to say that it just didn't get flagged."

Suggesting that he had been the victim of a double standard, Penn cited Charlie Black's presence on Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. Black had served as chair of BKSH & Associates, a lobbying firm associated with Burson-Marsteller, up until leaving the post in March 2008.

Story continues below

"It is interesting Charlie Black was the chief strategist for McCain and he left only after McCain got the nomination. So I have to look back and see whether or not - in the end, hindsight is foresight, but I think it's a question," said Penn. "If you look at the McCain-Charlie Black experience versus mine - obviously, the press just gave considerable more attention to what goes on overt at the Clinton campaign."

On Sunday evening, the Clinton campaign announced that Penn would be stepping down from his role as the campaign's chief strategist following the fallout from his meeting with the Colombia ambassador. Since then, however, there had been debate over exactly what involvement the pollster would have with the campaign. On Monday, Marc Ambinder reported that Penn would "remain a key member of the campaign's senior staff."

Later in the day, Ben Smith quoted an anonymous Clinton aide saying: "Its a change. He went from being in charge to being one of the important voices."

On the conference call, Penn addressed this issue early on, not deviating much from the campaign's talking points.

"While I will continue to advise the Clintons on the campaign, I obviously will have in this other role more time for what I do best, working here," said Penn

The call was meant to address "particularly, I think, what the message should be in our conversations with our clients, our prospects, [and] our staff." Saying he had three call this morning from prospective clients now eager to sign up with the firm, Penn pledged that the controversial meeting would "cycle through the news as these things do."

"There will probably be another day," he said, "but there really is only a one two three to the story but not really much more."

Anyone else smell a rat?

Here is a story struggling to persuade us that this whole thing was an essentially innocent arrangement by a very very busy man just trying to do right by everyone. It tells us there's nothing really bad here, it will all soon blow over, and Hillary opposes this trade deal.

This private call (private except that all of us have it word for word a day later) is just packed with unnatural dialog: "As I said, it was someone I worked for -- remember, we had the contract for a year before it was even about the free trade agreement, and..." This thing even gives cover for Penn in case he's caught in the future giving support to those nervous aides.

I wouldn't doubt that is really Penn's voice on that recording. I hope we get to hear it. I want to hear whether the acting is as bad as the script.

What I mostly get out of this is that the Clinton's are so tied up with the inside the beltway lobbyists and corporate base that she would never be able to cleanse and lead any kind of reform. It would still be a corporate government with big money owning Congress and the White House if she were elected. We need to break this up. That is one reason why Obama is so much more appealing as a candidate. Just look at who is backing her in Penn. It is the old Democratic political machine; back room deals, favors and pay backs. Enough already!

I was struck with how much it sounds like Clinton talking points. There were explanations of how this arrangement didn't raise any conflict of interest issues, Penn is so innocent, it will all blow over soon and by the way we were contacted by some prospective clients, so this is really a good thing for our business.

Good point about how this was leaked. Penn wanted it leaked?

Votes tell the story about NAFTA. Hillary has opposed the NAFTA expansion to Peru. Her Democrat opponent is on-record voting to expand Nafta to Peru in 2007. He only recently has adopted Hillary's position to campaign to change Nafta to be more favorable to US citizens. Then her opponent's debacle was that he didn't even know his own position or Hillary's position, and his campaign distributed a campaign piece in Ohio misrepresenting his past performance and also misrepresenting HIllary's opposition to Nafta. When he was given a chance to retract, he insisted the campaign piece was accurate. Check your facts please!!! Hillary's actions on NAFTA have followed her words, not so with her opponent.

Opposing one NAFTA expansion bill is not the equivalent of opposing NAFTA. Especially because she supported the initial passage of the agreement. Your argument is tantamount to saying that the war was a good idea, but the surge was a mistake -- and then trying to pass yourself off as the antiwar candidate.

oh by the way... take a look back at her speeches while campaigning in Texas... she was praising NAFTA... thats because it benefits those people!!!

Then.. go to Ohio and she is utterly disgraced by NAFTA!!!!

This was all at the same time... so please tell me again how she is a staunch opponent of NAFTA???
Answer: she is when it is politically positive for her... she supports it...

Obama's position has been that it must include labor and environmental standards that give American workers a level playing field. There is a record of Hillary's unreserved support for NAFTA for the past ten years. This includes witnesses at numerous meeting with Hillary where she lobbied to gain support for NAFTA.

Over 2500 trade unionists have been murdered in Columbia in the past ten years, more than half that number in the last four. It is also the number one exporter of drugs in the world. It is the heighth of hypocrisy to oppose NAFTA in Peru but support it in Columbia.

Get a grip on reality.

Breaking News

NBC news is reporting that Chief Strategist, Mark Penn, has fired Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) as candidate for the Hillary Clinton For President campaign. It was a move that has been expected for weeks by many high ranking officials within the campaign.

In a statement about Hillary Clinton, the Clinton campaign said they were "enormously grateful for her friendship and her outstanding work" and said she "has done an extraordinary job in getting us to this point -- within reach of the nomination."

Behind the scenes, many staffers were furious over the candidate's insistance on labeling herself as an opponent to the Columbia Free Trade Agreement. "We spent an enormous amount of time courting the Columbian government, working out blockbuster lobbying deals", said one senior campaign member in an interview. "Getting caught making public statements opposing the deal brought alot of heat -- the deals are dead now".

Clinton, who has been with Mark Penn since she was first lady of the United States, noted that "this has already been the longest Presidential campaign in the history of our nation, and one that has required enormous sacrifices from all of us and our families."

She wrote that she has been "proud to be a candidate for this campaign, and prouder still to call Mark my friend for more than twelve years. I know that he will make a great chief strategist."

The more I think about this entire scenerio the more ridiculous it becomes. Hillary opposes the Columbian free trade, meanwhile her head strategist is working for the Columbian govt. Now I've read Wolfson does too, just a different company. Did these guys who are suppose to be so smart not get the impact of NAFTA on our economy? Did they not get that Hillary Opposes this? Are we suppose to believe she didn't know? Are we suppose to believe these guys actually don't see the conflict of interest? It is so beyond stupid and bad judgement that it almost seems deliberate....

here is answer... this woman insults the intelligence of the American people... she thinks she can keep holding her boring rallies and telling everyone how much she cares for your jobs when in all actuality, she is have Pig Pen run off to Canada(yes) and Columbia to make sure they fatten their pockets....

the sooner people wake up to this madness, the better off we are!!! I hope the people of PENN take a good look at what happened to the people of Ohio... they got HOODWINKED!!!

End this crap Pennsylvania... vote Obama on 4/22

The intertwine of Washington politics is based on "ignorance." ... Our ignorance. The less the American voter knows, the more favors can be repaid.

Washington Folks are stupid to think it would never catch up with them, but they also know that most Americans are busy trying to raise a family or make a living... So they continue to take the risks of not getting exposed like Penn was today... Yet, to him, it's really no big deal because that's how the game is and has been played.

Our ignorance is the weapon of Washington.

Finat, Obama has you hoodwinked BIG TIME indeed!!! Hillary vetoed expanding Nafta, and Obama voted yes on the expansion of NAFTA, This was in 2007! I would think he might be able to remember this vote, wouldn't ya think....??? Maybe the folks in the bigger states have somewhat better media coverage to let the voters hear the issues and decide.

meltingpot101 & FINTA// Hillary and staff are experiencing this problem for one reason only, they never anticipated a protracted fight for the nomination. Had Hillary actually won the nomination on February 5th, it is very possible that these small details which have blew up in her face might not have come out---or they would have been able to adjust.

The Clinton campaign have awoken each day to the same bad dream, there is in-fighting, poor management at the top, mounting debt and probably a sense of resignation that things are going to still be just as bad, come tommorrow.

It is really amazing how the media switches gears as it now is on the Baptist 'Death Watch' for Hillary, its really quite sad at this point that Hillary doesn't exhibit some class and walk away, she obviously rather stubborn as well as in some sorta of denial.

So Hillary, Obama and McCain met with the Ambassador from Colombia. The DNC wont let Gays be part of our Affirmative Action Agenda, because members of the DNC Black Caucus, such as Donna Brazile, opposed the plan because it was seen as “an affront to the civil rights movement.” And then they fired the gay man who worked for the DNC because he wouldn't cover it up.

HRC Colombia ties don't stop with Penn

Mark Penn isn’t the only Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter on the wrong side of the Colombia trade agreement.

The Democratic-leaning advocacy firm the Glover Park Group, former home to Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson, signed a $40,000 per month contract with the government of Colombia in April of 2007 to promote the very agreement that Clinton now rails against on the presidential campaign trail.

That means Glover Park Group was arguing the same position as has Penn's firm. The contentious Clinton strategist and Burson-Marsteller chief executive lost his campaign job over the weekend after The Wall Street Journal revealed that he’d met with Colombian officials to plot strategy on the pact.

Several other Glover Park employees have deep connections with the Clintons, including founding partner Joe Lockhart, who served as the White House press secretary under President Bill Clinton, and Joel Johnson, who was a senior communications adviser in the Clinton White House.
