Reality hit "Project Runway," the foundation of Bravo's transformation into a reality-based power network, is jumping ship in favor of women's network Lifetime — but NBC isn't going down without a fight.

Lifetime Networks' President and CEO Andrea Wong and The Weinstein Company's co-chairmen Bob and Harvey Weinstein announced today that "Project Runway" will begin its sixth season on Lifetime in November 2008. However, NBC, which owns Bravo, filed suit to keep the hit show, claiming that the network had right of first refusal on the series. From the New York Times' Bill Carter:

In a lawsuit filed Monday in state court in Manhattan, NBC accused the owner of "Project Runway," the Weinstein Company, of violating its rights by making the deal with Lifetime.

The suit asserts Harvey Weinstein, the chief executive of the Weinstein Company, promised NBC that it would have an opportunity to match any offer to the rights of "Project Runway" and that instead, Mr. Weinstein concluded a deal with Lifetime on Feb. 7, even though he continued to negotiate with NBC Universal for two more months.

In a statement, NBC said "NBC Universal has continuing rights related to 'Project Runway,' including a right of first refusal to future cycles of the series, which the Weinstein Company unfortunately has refused to honor."

Still, the show's stars expressed excitement about the move. "Fashion is about change, so we're looking forward to saying hello to Lifetime, our new fashionable home for our fashionable series," host Heidi Klum stated. "We're excited to bring 'Project Runway' to the #1 network for women."

Mentor Tim Gunn added, "Lifetime and I will definitely 'make it work' together. I am very excited to be part of the Lifetime family."

Lifetime is a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and Hearst Corporation. Bravo was acquired by NBC Universal in 2005.

"PROJECT RUNWAY" HITS THE CATWALK AND STRUTS OVER TO LIFETIME

IN NOVEMBER '08

Peabody Award-Winning Hit Series --

NEW YORK -- Lifetime Networks and The Weinstein Company have entered into a groundbreaking partnership that will move cable's top reality series, "Project Runway," to the top network for women, Lifetime Television, beginning November 2008 with the premiere of season six. In its most recent season, the hit show averaged a 3.8 W18-49 Live + 7 day rating* and the Live + 7 rating for the March 5th finale was a 6.1 W18-49 AA%.

Heidi Klum, "Project Runway's" international supermodel host, and Tim Gunn, Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne, Inc. and mentor to the show's contestants, are both fashioning their new home at Lifetime.

The pact, encompassing a five-year deal for the seven-time Emmy®-nominated and Peabody Award-winning series "Project Runway," was announced today by Lifetime Networks' President and CEO Andrea Wong and The Weinstein Company's Co-Chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein.

Wong said, "'Project Runway' is one of the best television programs on the air today on broadcast or cable. I am a huge fan. All my friends are huge fans. Having watercooler movies, dramas, and reality shows like 'Project Runway' is what Lifetime Television is all about. We welcome The Weinstein Company, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn to the Lifetime family for many walks down the runway to come."

"'Project Runway' is our programming crown jewel and great credit goes to Heidi, Tim and The Magical Elves for building more than a television show, but an actual brand that influences fashion interests and pop culture," stated Bob and Harvey Weinstein. "Whether it be our recent Peabody Award or the great ratings we have seen each year, 'Project Runway's' millions of loyal viewers have made the show a nationwide phenomenon. We would like to sincerely thank NBC Universal and Bravo for all their contribution and support. Today's announcement is a celebration of all of our success and having Lifetime's unique cable reach will ensure that the show will continue to grow and expand in the years to come. Lifetime is one of the strongest cable networks in the industry, with great leadership and a true commitment to original programming. We are very excited for the many new opportunities that will now be provided to 'Runway' and its fans and look forward to premiering the sixth season in November 2008."

"Fashion is about change, so we're looking forward to saying hello to Lifetime, our new fashionable home for our fashionable series," Heidi Klum stated. "We're excited to bring 'Project Runway' to the #1 network for women."

Tim Gunn added, "Lifetime and I will definitely 'make it work' together. I am very excited to be part of the Lifetime family."

Responding to a lawsuit filed today against it in the New York Supreme Court The Weinstein Company noted, after declining to compete for the right to have "Project Runway," NBC has sued to try to disrupt the series moving to Lifetime. "We believe that this lawsuit is without merit. While good for the market for lawyers, it is always unfortunate when parties try to win in court what they have lost in the marketplace," said David Boies, counsel to The Weinstein Company.

"Project Runway" provides budding designers with an opportunity to launch their careers in fashion. The wildly successful competition reality series has proven to be one of television's most talked about and was the highest rated reality competition show in all of cable for 2007.

"Project Runway" is executive produced by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves ("Project Greenlight," "Last Comic Standing," "Top Chef"). Heidi Klum and her managers Desiree Gruber and Jane Cha of NYC-based Full Picture also executive produce the series. John Miller and Barbara Schneeweiss will oversee the production on behalf of The Weinstein Company.

The Project Runway producers assume that the show is simply about "fashion" and that it will be a perfect fit on Lifetime, since "fashion"=women, right? Sorry, but PR is about much more than fashion, it's about creativity and art. I can't imagine that the same people who can stomach to watch Cheryl Ladd or Meredith Baxter in woman-in-distress melodramas are much interested in art. I may be wrong, just my opinion. I'm sure PR won't implode over the move, but I bet it will confuse and frustrate loyal viewers who haven't tuned into Lifetime since the Golden Girls reruns.

I am an AVID fan of Project Runway, but I have a "feeling" that I will be missing more than seeing the new episodes on Lifetime. Frankly, I don't "get" the move unless it is for money reasons only. On Bravo you have a wide fan base: gay men (which make up a large portion of the viewer ship) along with all sorts of other markets. Why alienate anyone when switching networks? I don't get it...

I usually always find something fun to watch on Bravo and I NEVER ever watch Lifetime. So perhaps it is time to get a life and read another book!

If the NYT prints it, then you know it's true!

Ditching the gay channel for the do-nothing housewives channel? Bad move PR. The show doesn't exactly belong in the middle of a bunch of lame made-for-TV chic flicks.

"host Heidi Klum stated. "We're excited to bring 'Project Runway' to the #1 network for women."

I can't remember the last time I tuned into Lifetime for ANYTHING, I don't even know what it's channel number is! It's a poor fit, IMO, and I'm not sure I'll take the trouble to find the channel because Lifetime gives me the creeps these days.

I agree with you about Lifetime - I think the last thing I watched on Lifetime were reruns of Unsolved Mysteries. Are they still running them?

And as if women are the main audience for PR.

Something tells me that the sometimes over-the-top, almost border line drag queen attire will not go over well with the Walmart audience.

I bet they go commercial next season- I wonder if Nina and MK will walk out.

-Big Mistake- Many viewers will not follow PR to Lifetime, which, lets face it, carries a frumpy, white-trash, middle aged, style-less, boring housewife vibe, as opposed to Bravo's reinvention as a chic, stylish network. Will they pair this with ARMY WIVES, or their LIMITLESS canon of 'men are abusive freaks, women are victim' made for TV moovies? Again-- Huge mistake!

Maybe for the reasons you stated, it's a clever plan by Heidi & Tim as a sure fire way to get out of their contracts for this show, 'cause you are right in that the Bravo viewership (ususally more educated, having culture and class, and/or also gay) will NOT cross over into the Lifetime Movie of the Day "Women are Victims and will be beaten, raped (ad nauseum)" network. God, their shows are largely terrible and gay people generally have too much taste to go over to that trailer trash ghetto network, thus making Project Runway a sure fire cancellation the same year as it's debut on Lifetime.

This would be due to it's fan base not willing to switch the channel over to there. I also hardly think that the Jerry Springer/HSN/CBN/Daytime soap watching crowd of Lifetime will become enamored with Project Runway. A MAJORLY bad idea on the part of The Weinstein Company.

Which contract would Heidi be getting out of - that of producer of Project Runway or as host? Heidi is one of the original producers of the show. She was quoted not long ago of saying that she was asked by the other producers to take on the hosting spot, something she did not originally intend to do.

I don't like this move, howver, to Lifetime either. Just not the same ambiance. LOL.

I do not see why fans of Project Runway couldn't spend what all of 15 seconds figuring out what channel Lifetime is on? Hell the gays already know that cause of the Golden Girls. Lifetime offered more money and got the contract.

I really doubt there are Bravo fans out there that wont change the channel out of some sort of loyalty to Bravo??

NBC frakked up when they didn't move PR to broadcast this year with the strike. Now they are just pissy cause they thought they could get the milk for a cheaper cost.

Bravo to the Weinstens.

No the big mistake was bravo going to shit programming.....oh, that's the so called chic "reality TV". If I wanted that shit I can go to the networks. Well, the networks are not by passed where they never show up. They do at least provide local news. Bravo, which I did watch quite a bit, now is bannished.

I'm sorry, but I do not see how a contest show about fashion where usually half of the contestants and judges are gay men equates to being a good fit onto a third-tier network predominantly known for movies of women in peril by actresses who see doing said type of movie on that network as a death note to their careers. If Project Runway wanted to jump ship from Bravo, a big mistake in my opinion, it should have gone to either the Style or Logo networks don't you think?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:37 PM on 04/07/2008

Style and LOGO would be good fits too, but would probably out-price most people on basic cable packages.

The "foundation of Bravo's transformation into a reality-based power network" was not Project Runway. This started with Queer Eye to the Straight Guy - which was their ratings champ and brought eyes to the network in the first place.

It's shameful how Bravo ended Queer Eye in such a disrespectful manner. They pretty much just ran the last episodes all in a row and had no real big "end" for the show that made them.

Yes the audience had moved on but C'mon
