Raw Story:

John McCain's temper is well documented. He's called opponents and colleagues "shitheads," "assholes" and in at least one case "a fucking jerk."...

Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

As regards digging into this, exposing it, and great skits on SNL...wait for the general election. Republicans must be having nightmares by now.

SNL doesn't have the grapes to cover an incident like this. I'd rather wait until Chris Rock gets hold of it.

What is truly disturbing to me is the fact that Cindy McCain is faithfully "standing by her man," even after he publicly humiliated her with such vile remarks. Additionally, if he would publically humiliate her in such a fashion, then what must he have said or done to her in private? Totally disgusting on his part, yet she (a very wealthy woman) remains by his side. Since she doesn't need him to financially provide for her (thus negating the old "cave man" theory), that begs the question: Why does she stay with this abusive man? Hmmm...could it be that...she is lusting after the power and prestige that would come with her husband as president and her as first lady? Well, of course. Rhetorical question.

Ironically, her blind support for her abuser is comparable to John McCain's kissing Bush's butt after the 2000 campaign, even after the Bush/Rove slime machine spread lies that McCain had fathered an illegimate black child. As insulting and hurtful as these lies were to his family -- indicated by the recent revelation by the Bangladeshian adopted child in question, who wondered why President Bush hated her -- McCain continues to grovel at Bush's feet. The disturbing toleration of humuliation and abuse by these power-hungry people is absolutely disgusting.

Generally, the state of a candidate's marriage is irrelevant to me, but while this speaks volumes about the creepiness that is John and Cindy McCain, I'm really more interested in what it says about McCain's personality in general. A guy who gets so angry at his wife's offhand/affectionate reference to his aging that he drops the C-bomb on her and calls her a whore? Hairtrigger temper, irrationally disproportionate response to perceived insult, and immediate dive to the gutter? Yes, please put that in the Oval Office. And it doesn't say anything about Cindy's response, which was probably a blush and a simpering smile, or, worse, an apology for him, which means this is just your average exchange in the McCain household.

People calling this just a "temper" need a reality check. Getting pissed at your wife shows a temper, humiliating her in public shows a lack of self-control.

This is NOT a man you want in charge of the armies and the nukes.

AND CALLING HER A TROLLOP AND A C___T is completely over the edge. I can't imagine all this not catching up with McCain at some point during the campaign. Let's hope, anyway....

I have never understood why McCain is considered a hero.

There's nothing heroic about being imprisoned.

Is it because he refused to be released when he was offered the opportunity?

That's not heroic; that's irrational...

Calling that heroic is news-speak. We all speak it. We have to.

Why is this very old man in contention for POTUS?? Why are Clinton women saying they will vote for McCain rather than Obama if she doesn't win??? As a 62 yr old woman, single mom and longtime feminist, I have to say "HAVE YOU ALL LOST YOUR MINDS"??????????
Yes, he is endearing like your grandpa (outwardly likeable) - but would you want that same senile Grandpa to be President of the United States??

IF MY GRANDPA WERE AS "ENDEARING" AS MCCAIN I'd disown him. (If I had a grandpa). Look, Ms. Sushi, age is the least of McCain's problems. With an out-of-control temper like that, it would matter if he were half his age and running for president (which someone half his age -- 35-1/2 -- is legally entitled to do by the Constitution). No, I think "endearing" is hardly the word for him and I don't want to say what the word is in polite (or even impolite, as here) company....

I'm hoping that when Clinton's female supporters say that, as many of them do, it's mere hyperbole; if it's an actual statement of intention, it's a sign that they've completely lost touch with reality to the point that they're willing to behave in a manner diametrically opposed to their own interests and that of this country. I guess only time will tell.

(Try #2, day 2...)

Here too, sushi, I don't find him endearing outwardly. That soft tone is hideously artificial, the false, forced control of a lunatic, and too creepy to listen to for more than a few seconds at a time. He's pysically ugly, exceptionally so, where lots of men around that age are perfectly lovely people to look at. And the things he says are often so stupid, and show such a lack of engaging personality and natural poise, that I bite my thumbnail pityingly, WINCING as I watch him. He is misery incarnate for anyone exposed to his outwardness. Just...ICK.

Sometimes I've thought perhaps he has PSTD in reality, and this is a difficult thing to overcome, his inability to control verbal impulse to abuse someone, or quick rise to anger. I am not throwing stones, just saying that this is indicative of this situation.

Why is anyone surprised? Perhaps he was misspeaking, sleep-deprived, or dodging sniperfire.

Mr. McCain is a warmonger, and many warmongers talk like this, if not in public, than in private.

Clearly, McCain is the best second choice for all those Clinton supporters who say they will vote for McCain over Obama if Clinton loses. They claim Obama is "divisive" and his supporters are "hateful" and "misogynistic"... and that McCain is "better qualified". Their own candidate Ms. Clinton has even publicly endorsed McCain over Mr. Obama, and called McCain her "friend", and said their contest would be "the most civilized in history". Not surprising, since both of them supported war in Iraq and are unapologetic about it, and share hostile positions against Iran. They're both warmongerers who have a reputation for their tempers and both support Fox News.

Anybody who is still a Clinton supporter after Clinton's McCain endorsement, and is also willing to vote for "my-wife-is-a-c*nt" McCain if Clinton loses, clearly is an excellent judge of character, a very wise and well-informed citizen voter, and a true supporter of women's rights. You should be very proud of yourselves as Democrats and as Americans for correctly identifying Mr. Obama as the divisive, misogynistic, anti-American, empty-suited Anti-Christ. I'm sure you feel much prouder than Michelle Obama.

I hope that any Democrat who is threatening to, or thinking about, voting for McCain if your candidate does not win the nomination thinks very, very carefully before casting a vote for a man who so obviously has no respect for women.

Do we really want to give this man the kind of power he would have as POTUS over the supreme court and, consequently, so much power over our reproductive rights? Do we really want to have this man making representing us to the world?

Women, especially, think about what it would mean to vote for this man if your candidate loses (and I'm talking to supporters of both dems here). Could you really vote for someone with so little regard for women?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:11 PM on 04/09/2008

As an Independent who had said, "If _______ does not get the nomination, I'm voting McCain in fall," this combined with McCain's inability to recognize facts regarding reproductive health (Do condoms help reduce the spread of AIDS, Senator? Gotta check your "position" on that one, still?), I don't see how I can stomach voting for the man.

I still believe my vote for him in 2000 was not wasted - he would have been better than Bush - but I cannot fathom voting for him against one of the two Democratic candidates.

i am not excusing his behavior, nor do i think its acceptable, nor do i in any way agree with his politcal views, but as someone who treats veterans who often have ptsd (post traumatic stress disorder), i have to mention that having a hair trigger temper and irritability are signs or scars left over from having been forced to live in circumstances that none of us ever should have to. when one is in a combat/pow situation and on guard 24/7 for many years, the brain has a hard time adjusting back to "civilzation." again, i don't condone him but i can maybe understand why he has this problem. i do wish people would stop calling him names. what is that saying about not judging someone until you have walked 1000 steps in his shoes or something?

I truly respect your expertise on the matter and honor your work with veterans. Unfortunately, I don't want a President with a hair trigger temper, a brain that has a hard time processing civilization or someone who would ever refer to a woman as a c**t no matter what the circumstances. This sounds like someone in need of ADA Accomodation, not someone who can be trusted with the immense job of being President.

Tublu:

You make a good point. However, those who still suffer from PTSD shouldn't be running for POTUS. This is not to mention that something is clearly wrong if a 20-year Senator who supports 100 years in Iraq can't tell the difference between Shias and Shiites.

That said, he is an appropriate candidate for Hillaryland supporters to rally behind when Clinton loses the nomination. We should all trust in Clinton's judgment, because she has 35 years of experience which includes 8 years of experience and friendship with McCain. She showed great judgment and wisdom when she publicly endorsed him over Mr. Obama, who has clearly run a more divisive, hateful, and misogynistic campaign.

Anybody who criticizes and adamantly opposes Ms. Clinton's candidacy, is clearly a misogynist.

I agree that McCain needs to be in treatment rather than running for the most powerful position in the world.

He's a burnt out old coot who's got no business anywhere near an elected office. I don't know how many people from Arizona you know, but maybe there's something about living in a desert that screws with your judgment. How else could he have gotten elected?

Oh yeah, lobbyist money. I forgot.

I appreciate this comment. I think we all accept that Mr. Mccain was tortured and brutalized and carries those scars and conditions usually seen in PTSD. However, I cam concerned in the manner in which those conditions or scars manifest themselves. His medical records will reveal if and when he has received treatment for his PTSD. If he has received no treatment, that reveals an even bigger problem. In any event, it is a problem which cannot be excused because he is a war hero or an accomplished elderly person.

(Day 2, try 2)

McCain acts EXACTLY like someone I know in real life who was never tortured, never even mistreated, in her life. Was McCain imprisoned and tortured before, or after, he became known as "McNasty" in high school? Stop with the excuses for McCain. He isn't doing ANYTHING that a host of dreadful evil people don't also do, people who were never POWs. It has nothing to do with that, and if it DOES, then why is he running for POTUS, for God's sake?! He should be trapped under a net, loaded into a van and transported to the loony bin to keep the country safe from like-minded rats who might vote him into office!

With the born-bad pathological narcissist, it is ALWAYS us who must walk in 1000 steps in THEIR shoes, to excuse THEM, because THEY are so awful, have hurt so many people so much, that it MUST be the fault of cruel upbringing or PTSD. Ill-behaved monsters need to be made to walk 1000 steps in other people's shoes for a nice fat change.

No excuses, McSnotty, you are a bad man and very few of us are fooled. Unfortunately, some ARE, and they may be enough.

Just a little old case of PTSD. Did he ever get any type of counseling after his years as a POW? The voting public has a right to know. Maybe he has some self hatred for naplming the indiginous population from 30,000 feet? He's already a genuine war criminal for that. Oh, I forgot, he was just following orders. from his dad, the admiral.
