Spike Lee

Director Spike Lee was asked about his political leanings this season. He had kind words for Sen. Obama, even taking credit for his marriage to Michelle:

I'm riding my man Obama. I think he's a visionary. Actually, Barack told me the first date he took Michelle to was Do the Right Thing. I said, "Thank God I made it. Otherwise you would have taken her to Soul Man. Michelle would have been like, 'What's wrong with this brother?' "

However, Lee attacked the Clintons, calling them liars who drag along black politicians as subservients:

The Clintons, man, they would lie on a stack of Bibles. Snipers? That's not misspeaking; that's some pure bullshit. I voted for Clinton twice, but that's over with. These old black politicians say, "Ooh, Massuh Clinton was good to us, massuh hired a lot of us, massuh was good!" Hoo! Charlie Rangel, David Dinkins--they have to understand this is a new day. People ain't feelin' that stuff. It's like a tide, and the people who get in the way are just gonna get swept out into the ocean.

Look I know alot of people are upset, but he's right, you know. Every time someone tries to get me to vote Clinton it's always "They gave us money, and good jobs, and we can get them back" and it is time we move from accepting these "half loaves" which came with things like welfare "reform" and NAFTA , to demanding the "whole loaf" of justice, peace and security. No more compromising with our future.

As a fellow Brooklynite, Spike, you have disappointed me tremendously with the racist commentary about the Clinton's. You know your attacks on Rangel and Dinkins are unfounded and downright mean to the core. IIf you want to support Barack Obama, that is your perrogative and you certainly have the right to endorse him if you choose. However, demeaning four other individuals who have never demeaned you or your fellow black Americans is truly unfair and speaks volumes about the unfair nature of your character. I guess Hollywood sees this as well, which is why you are so bitter and could never garner enough support at oscar time for your movies. Channel your energies into your failing career and cease in attacking those in the political world who have never hurt you directly.

Why don't you do what you are best at, the "vast right wing conspiracy" is already making a script on "Obama the movie" scheduled for the summer, to scare those ignorant voters, you can get off your behind and do the "left wing version" to push back with truths........

How disappointing to hear him talk like that.

I thought I liked him. I didn't know he was just another mean jerk.

A positive endorsement -- minus the trashing of "old black politicians" and Clinton -- would probably have done just as well.

A stack of Bibles is meaningless if not even one of them is in your heart. Only judge yourself by the Bible. Never to measure other by your Bible. Your pity mind is going too far.

I am not sure what you consider racist and why you seem so angry yourself. Do you really think that the only reason Spike supports Sen Obama is because he is black?

Are we forgetting that this is actually a man who is intelligent and is running for POTUS to solve some problems that have? All black people who support him do it b/c he is black? Black people also have brains.

Male/Female

Protestant/Catholic/Morman/......

White/Yellow/Brown/Black or Tan

What other group?

Able/Disabled?

What other group?

I have nothing nice to say about Spike Lee.

He is a racist to the core. He is one of the most toxic human beings there is. I have actually met the man, and his extremely foul language and views made me sick. He is an outcast in Hollywood - which is why he lives in Brooklyn - and he is despised by the rest of his african american acting bretheren.

We would expect nothing less of Spike Lee than to support Obama because he is black, and denigrate Hillary because she is white. It's racism to the core - and don't try to tell me otherwise, as there is a massive double standard occurring in politics right now and I do not support it.

enough: YOU ARE THE RACIST. To say that black people only support Obama because of race is an insult to all voters and to all candidates. Are you now going to say that women only support Hillary because she's a woman? That's sexist. Spike Lee is one of the most successful and respected directors in the history of the entertainment industry. Disagree with his opinion, but don't dismiss him just because he's black. That's what racism is.

You're funny, now crawl back under your troll rock and marinate a while longer, you might have something meaningful to say in . . . oh about another 5 years.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle "black"?!?

enoughalready13,

Spike Lee is not a racist, but the old saying goes, it takes a racist to know a racist! So maybe you are the racist, I'm not calling you one but it's something you should consider. Maybe you are angry because he called Bill and Hillary the people that they are liars and people who have a master plantation complex.

Anyway, did anyone see the McCain girl's new video "Here comes McCain again..", it was
HI-LA-RIOUS..wwwooo! I didn't know big girls could be so funny...ha, ha...! Got to go, I'm looking for a new girlfriend.

I just went to factcheck.org and did a search on Obama. Some embellishments and misleading ads, but I didn't see anything they referred to as on outright lie. Is there one in particular that caught your attention? If so, please share it with us.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:32 PM on 04/08/2008

Spike, I could not agree more. When Rangel and Bob Johnson started spouting off, I knew the Clintons had employed the idea of having gone of those people criticize Barack so that blacks would see that "their own" did not support him and thus they'd better support the ones who "have always done right by us." As though doing the right thing gives anyone a free pass till the end of days.

It was a shameful race play that has backfired with voters, black and non-black. Hopefully the exposure will end Hillary's political future with all voters.

A lot of black people who are supporting the Clintons (I do not blame them, it is their prerogative) who are pulling this type of language about Sen Obama not being black enough are just doing that because they are envious. They wished it were them that this was happening to. Give some other reasons why you do not support him (policies, issues). The rest is just outside of the topic.
I was never raised with anger, never to hate anyone. I was always taught to work hard all my life. I do not find any excuses for anything. I know the game I play it. We have a long way to go before it get to the standard we want it to be (whatever it is). But let not dismiss the little that we can get.
Do not demonize Sen Obama for his Havard education, teach your child to work hard at being the best and send him to Harvard if you can. Stop being bitter.

I need to stop. Obama 08!!!!

I have been following him since he delivered the keynote at the DNC in 2004.
I forgot to mention that I travel the world, I am from Africa, educated in France and here in the USA. This whole drama going with this election is surprising. But after we elected BUSH twice, nothing surprises me here anymore.
It used to be when we travel we were proud to arrive at airports around the world, because we were always welcome as soon as people found out we were americans. Then now when we go, we have to squeeze by because people look at us with this look in the face: you are all stupid to have voted for BUSH twice.
Sen Obama will bring tremendous change in the image of our country around the world.
For you to say he has not suffered from racism because he has always lived in a privileged environment is being dishonest. My parents have never been slaves, I have grown up very privileged. However, I work in a law firm where some white partners would not even speak to me because I am black. They do not want to know where you are from, what you are doing, just because some of them think they do not have any subject they can discuss with you. It does not matter that I speak several languages, I stay in 5 stars hotels when I travel, to them I am just a black person.

I have been reading this blog for a long time and finally decided to join the community. I like it because the level of somprehension here is higher than the majority of the blogs and people here know what they are talking about.

I am reading this post and the thing that struck me and I guess that compelled me to respond is Julia1023. I feel a lot of resentment in all her comments, even disdain. It is her prerogative to not vote for Sen Obama and have her choice of vote for the candidate she wants. However, what I see is hate. She sounds to not take very well the fact that the first black president did not come from the pool of olf slaves because the Sen's family has not suffered from slavery, thereby not beeing "black enough."
I am a black woman of 40, educated. I am an attorney and entered Sen' campaign the very day he announced to run for POTUS. He came to Oakland (CA) for a rally, his first, I took all my children to the rally back in 3/07. I did not have to wait to see if white people were going to vote for him for me to do it.

Julia1023, my parents are older than yourself, ages 52 and 53. Both of parents grew up in rural Mississippi when racism was very much alive and well. My mother is very light and my father is very dark. Both, equally have experienced the same level of racism. My mother, because she was too light would get harassed by both blacks and whites. Blacks were always saying she wasn't black enough. Whites were either just plain hateful against blacks or they would "favor" her for fair features, which my mother did not like. Just because one is lighter, does not mean they have it easier. I can imagine that Barack experienced racism as he further pursued his education. Many people have the impression that he got to where he got because of some affirmative action deal. Well, he did not.
I am not loyal to the Clintons because of a variety of reasons. My parents voted for Bill Clinton both times, likely because he was considered "the first black president". But, sadly, we know that this is not the case. Now, my parents have seen the light. They are older, yes, but they can tell when someone is just trying to pander. They are now supporting Barack Obama.
