Spike Lee: Hillary And "Massuh" Clinton Would "Lie On A Stack Of Bibles"

Director Spike Lee was asked about his political leanings this season. He had kind words for Sen. Obama, even taking credit for his marriage to Michelle:

I'm riding my man Obama. I think he's a visionary. Actually, Barack told me the first date he took Michelle to was Do the Right Thing. I said, "Thank God I made it. Otherwise you would have taken her to Soul Man. Michelle would have been like, 'What's wrong with this brother?' "

However, Lee attacked the Clintons, calling them liars who drag along black politicians as subservients:

The Clintons, man, they would lie on a stack of Bibles. Snipers? That's not misspeaking; that's some pure bullshit. I voted for Clinton twice, but that's over with. These old black politicians say, "Ooh, Massuh Clinton was good to us, massuh hired a lot of us, massuh was good!" Hoo! Charlie Rangel, David Dinkins--they have to understand this is a new day. People ain't feelin' that stuff. It's like a tide, and the people who get in the way are just gonna get swept out into the ocean.

Many people are going to end up on the wrong side of history, swept aside because of their refusal to embrace this transformational energy. You know he's gonna pick it back up with a movie or documentary. This discussion will be going on in the AA community, but most whites want no parts of this. Many are still in shock that traditional hierarchical roles are being changed. Its gonna take them a while to recover.

So right! Until they recover, we can't have a rational discussion about race in this country,pa­rticularly between blacks and whites. We don't start in the same place. Some people, black and white, think black people need to just get over slavery and Jim Crow and they resulting discrimination that followed. Let's just start over. Or worse yet are the current conversations I hear among younger whites almost daily: Blacks are the ones who are racist and if they can use the "n" word, I can and will if I want. Bill Cosby is right, black men don't take care of their children; black men are more likely to be criminals, thereby proving that they are more violent--the lies go on. They never owned slaves and are unwilling to acknowledge the advantages they have nonetheless reaped because, and only because, they are white.

I hope I'm wrong; I pray that what I've seen is limited and hardly representative of the larger community. What I fear is that it is not.
