Patrick Gavin at FishbowlDC has obtained an advance copy of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine, which features a long, juicy profile of Chris Matthews by Mark Leibovich. In the piece, Matthews admits that MSNBC executives forced him to apologize for sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton and speculates that he would be an inviting target for a propaganda kidnapping, which is why he won't visit Syria.

The profile also reveals Matthews' deep job insecurity: his contract expires next year and "NBC officials seem bent on conveying the message that they could get the same ratings, or better ones, for considerably less" than the $5 million per year he gets now. Matthews is particularly suspicious of David Gregory, who is commonly perceived to be auditioning to be is replacement.

Leibovich also writes that "Matthews craves [Tim] Russert's approval like that of an older brother, but that "Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish....Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief."

Choice excerpts below, but visit FishbowlDC for more.

• As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isn't so funny now, is it?'"

• Matthews says the notion that he is sexist has been pushed unfairly by blogs, women's groups and, to some degree, the Clinton campaign. His remark that Clinton benefitted because her husband "messed around" triggered much outrage from the Clinton team. Matthews eventually apologized in a rambling on-air explanation, but he hardly sounds contrite now. "I was tonally inaccurate but factually true," he told me. I had asked him earlier if he was forced into the apology. "Oh, yeah, of course I was forced into that," he said, laughing. "No, no, no .... Phil [Griffin] asked me to do that."

• "By the way, have you figured me out yet?" Matthews said at the end of another phone conversation the following day. "You gotta understand, it's all complicated. It's not like Tim." Tim — as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" — is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

• A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief.

• According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann. Nor, according to network sources, has Olbermann bothered to hide his low regard for Matthews, although when I spoke to him, Olbermann denied any personal animosity toward Matthews and told me that he appreciates his "John Madden-like enthusiasm for politics."

They wouldn't be doing themselves any favors by replacing Chris Matthews with DAVID GREGORY! That perpetual grin of his irks me more than I can express. He makes me miss Tucker.

I have been watching less of Matthews as I don't see him playing "Hardball" at all - he is now more like Larry King.

For example - when he has 20 and 30-somethings on his show (and who have never been in the military) talking about their support for the Iraq War - telling us all why the Troops needs to stay in Iraq and we all need to keep paying for it - I cannot get over that Chris never asks these people "If the Iraq War is so important why are you not signing up and going to fight in it"? - and then pin them down on it for an answer.

This is, at least to me, a bottom line question for anyone of military age - who supports the war - but isn't going to fight in it themselves.

If the war is not worth their personal sacrifice how serious can anyone take their flag-waving support?

But I don't why Matthews will never ask this question - perhaps he is embarrassed by his own lack of Service due to his Draft Deferment during Vietnam to actually call someone else out on their lack of Service?

Mathews wants to be like Russert? He's even dumber than I thought.

If they get rid of Matthews it will be one of the happiest days of my life. He is the biggest phony that ever was.

Chris Matthews is a star struck, immature, biased, uninformed and full of himself TV personality....He is not the political guru he thinks he is. He is biased against Bill and Hillary, and probably Chelsea, but since I gave up watching him I am not sure of Chelsea. I have stopped watching him because of his bias, and too, I gave up watching Keith Olbermann for the same reason.

I used to like Keith until he jumped onto the "Hate Hillary" bandwagon. Then it was -- what the hell? Only thing I can come up with is that maybe he wants to protect that $4,000,000 contract he got a while back.

It would be a HUGE mistake for MSNBC to replace Matthews with David Gregory. No offense to David Gregory, but his show is booooring and no different than anybody else's really.

When Joe Scarborough was on David Gregory's show giving us the "maverick" McCain talking points (He was against the Bush tax cuts! He likes to poke at the conservative base!) and Rachel kicked him to the curb with nothing but the facts, I almost had tears in my eyes. Finally someone had called that BS with facts as their reasoning.

Her analysis on Olbermann is as rare and spot on in the MSM as the brilliant Michael Ware's analysis from Iraq.

I learn from her.

Rachel Maddow is an Obama supporter. I think every pundit on TV should have to wear a sign around their neck indicating whom they support. It isn't difficult to figure out black pundits usually support black, but do they have to have the obligatory black pundit along with several white ones who support Obama. It is most usual to have a Clinton supporter. Frankly, I don't want only pro Obama comments and anti Clinton comments. I want facts upon which I can base my decisions and judgements.

Chris Matthews worrying about getting kidnapped in Syria? How typical of his ego. How important does he think he is? and who would pay to ransom him? I'd almost pay to get rid of him.

I do agree that David Gregory's show is not very different from the proliferation of like shows on MSM. But at least he doesn't drool, interupt constantly, get shivers up his leg when he hears Obama, fawn endlessly, and congratulate himself constantly.

A news show with good analysis and with more light than heat would be very welcome. When entertainment becomes the primary value of "news" shows, we are in big trouble . . . and we are. How many times do we need to see Obama send his bowling ball into the gutters, see pictures of Hillary arriving at the airport in Bosnia, hear the same snippets from Rev. Wright's sermons, etc? Isn't there a war going on? an economy in trouble? How about some in-depth analysis? Not just talking heads that Chris Matthews can goad.

while i agree with most of what you said, i've gotta say that chris matthews is still more fair to democrats than CNN or FOX anchors. he's got a good personality for a political show, but definitely not a news show.
