Patrick Gavin at FishbowlDC has obtained an advance copy of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine, which features a long, juicy profile of Chris Matthews by Mark Leibovich. In the piece, Matthews admits that MSNBC executives forced him to apologize for sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton and speculates that he would be an inviting target for a propaganda kidnapping, which is why he won't visit Syria.

The profile also reveals Matthews' deep job insecurity: his contract expires next year and "NBC officials seem bent on conveying the message that they could get the same ratings, or better ones, for considerably less" than the $5 million per year he gets now. Matthews is particularly suspicious of David Gregory, who is commonly perceived to be auditioning to be is replacement.

Leibovich also writes that "Matthews craves [Tim] Russert's approval like that of an older brother, but that "Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish....Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief."

Choice excerpts below, but visit FishbowlDC for more.

• As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isn't so funny now, is it?'"

• Matthews says the notion that he is sexist has been pushed unfairly by blogs, women's groups and, to some degree, the Clinton campaign. His remark that Clinton benefitted because her husband "messed around" triggered much outrage from the Clinton team. Matthews eventually apologized in a rambling on-air explanation, but he hardly sounds contrite now. "I was tonally inaccurate but factually true," he told me. I had asked him earlier if he was forced into the apology. "Oh, yeah, of course I was forced into that," he said, laughing. "No, no, no .... Phil [Griffin] asked me to do that."

• "By the way, have you figured me out yet?" Matthews said at the end of another phone conversation the following day. "You gotta understand, it's all complicated. It's not like Tim." Tim — as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" — is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

• A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief.

• According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann. Nor, according to network sources, has Olbermann bothered to hide his low regard for Matthews, although when I spoke to him, Olbermann denied any personal animosity toward Matthews and told me that he appreciates his "John Madden-like enthusiasm for politics."

Hey Chris, that would actually KEEP you from being kidnapped, even with your high opinion of yourself.

Oh, come on. We all know the guy is kinda nutty. But so what? Any sane person who can read and write, who watches MSNBC, will raise an eyebrow at the ways in which the network's anchors and pundits jump, twirl, sing, tear off their underwear, and thrash guests--all to grab TV ratings. These guys are smart and pretty well informed, yet they have to act like BUFFOONS and change topic every ten seconds in this manic attempt at holding our attention. If they just got rid of the crawl--or the three crawls--on screen at all times, we would listen more carefully. But no. They'll end up delivering the news naked with dancing girls and ponies in the studio, before any MSNBC producer will grow the balls to deliver NEWS without the flair. Matthews is doing his job. He's reporting and he's getting attention. What more do you want?

warts and all chris is entertaining. no matter what envirement one works, there will always be turf wars..chris does his jog well as does keith and david. they bring differant styles and perspectives..love the way keith went after the corrupt walmart, and reminds every one about the mission accomplied slogan..i think when david reaches a comfort level, he will take more risks like chris.. he captured my respect at press conforences when he and helen thomas asked the only tough questions..chris as we know is flawed and some times silly, but the bottom line is he isn't afraid of controversy does go for the kill some times in a reckless manner, i can live with that.. i vote he is resigned when his contract is up. regardless of bloggers, if his numbers are there he will be too.

Something is deeply wrong with a network when the only decent, sane, normal, professional and intelligent people are Pat Buchanon and Tim Russert!! All the others are complete clowns and parodies of themselves. They need to completely clean house and get some fresh blood.

Olbermann would be included in the A-list if he stopped the constant Bill O'Reilly and Fox noise thrashing, and just stick to delivering sharp, critical, smart dialogues that speak the truth. Scarborough was great when he was on at night - he was serious, focused and poised - but now he's just a silly, joke-cracking thrill-seeker. The absolute worst are Tucker, Matthews and Mika who all have no idea what their jobs are, and continually embarrass the network.

Oh, that Mika? I've written Scarborough several emails complaining about her. She's like a small child interrupting an adult conversation. What a ditz. And that hair falling over one eye gives her a demented look. Picture her in an asylum.

God bless you. I thought I was the only one who finds Mika insanely annoying! Most of the time I cannot follow what she is saying because her thinking pattern seems to be circular and illogical, at best. And the cutesy act? *shiver* If Joe needs someone that ineffectual as his sidekick, I think it speaks volumes about how insecure he must be about his own abilities. All the smart, effective, personable, CAPABLE women available and he has Mika?

I turn the moment I see her fact.

The bit with her and Cooter from The Dukes of Hazzard pushed me over the edge. /eyeroll

Mika is much brighter than Joe. That's not easy to deal with when you are on a show with his name. It's like calling a show with Einstein and Keanu Reeves: Morning Keanu

Wow, that visual, seriously, I can picture her in an asylum. Also, can she wear any tighter shirts? She has the same one in about 25 different colors. Nice, sellout.

Darn, I was thinking the same thing about the Fox channel. The difference is that all of them are clowns.

I'll pony a $100.

Chris M is not worth respect... Much-less wasting time watching. He's worth $100 to me to get him out of the picture. It's like the "Big Boys" never watch his program either.

Matthews is a jackass. He has guests come on the show only to ask them questions, and then not let them answer. Instead he shouts over them imposing his own view.

STOP SHOUTING OVER YOUR GUESTS!

When Russert desribes Matthews as a "loose canon," I hope he is not referencing Matthews coverage of the Scooter Libby -Valerie Plame outing. The vice-president called Russert to complain that Matthews was being too pointed in his criticism of the administratin because Ambassador Wilson did not find evidence that Saddam tried to purchase uranium in Niger. Here Matthews did a great job!

I used to be a big fan of Matthews. However, he has let Bush entirely off the hook for the longest time with his endlesss speculation about the next election. Bush is still trying to rob us of our civil liberties and the press should cover him.

Ever since then he has strangely left Bush alone, even with all the assaults on the constitution. He really blamed Cheney moreso than Bush even then. Matthews, I believe, is a recovering alcoholic, and must identify with Bush.

It stuns me how ignorant and short sighted so called liberals who love Matthews are. Have you no memory? Do you not remember how Matthews skewered Al Gore, pushed and repeated the media lies about Gore ad nauseum. Now Matthews claims to be so "anti war" but the a**hole helped put the idiot dolt W in the white house. He drooled over BUSH after the jerk got us into the war progressives say they hate. I will never forget Matthews admiring W as he stood on the ship, with MISSION ACCOMPLISHED above him. Matthews words were NOT anti war...they were of admiration for the war monger...."he has a sunny nobility." The man has pushed and promoted Ann Coulter. Matthews insulted Kerry and never even attempted to shower negatives on the Swigtboaters. But now Matthews is drooling over Obama and suddenly the liberal bloggers love Matthews. Amazing...and frankly makes them out to be sanctimonious hypocrites.
I cannot believe any true progressive/liberal were not be totally turned off by Matthews and his ilk.

This is the same clown who admitted to voting for Bush in 2000. You see, Like Obama, Bush gave him tingles up his leg and caused him to drool uncontrollaby. I hope those buffoons over at MSNBC do the right thing and get rid of his demented, anti Clinton, pro McCain ass!

Chris Matthews has an obsessive hatred of the Clintons, in part, because he never landed the job he wanted in the Clinton administration. Relentlessly spewing disdain for Hillary Clinton is just plain unprofessional. There has been no effort to present a balanced picture. And Matthews swooning over Obama borders on crazy. Maybe it's time for him to go. The sooner the better. On the other hand, seeing how he handles the general election would be interesting. Remember he used to have a similar love affair with McCain. If it's McCain vs. Obama, will Matthews continue to slobber over Obama?

His disdain for Hillary and the Clintons is so overt, it is childish, catty and completely uncalled for. This guy needs to get a life and ride into the sunset. I hope he writes another book and no one buys it! That would be excellent.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:54 PM on 04/09/2008

Given a choice between McCain and Obama, Matthews will support McCain once we get to the General Election. His current adulation of Obama is primarily driven by his hatred of Hillary.

Of course if Senator McCain continues to have his so-called "senior moments" and temper tantrums Matthews may quickly bail. If there is anything he relishes it is to be topical and cool. He rails aginst (unsuccessfully I might add) any notion that he is out of touch.

He fears being the subject of ridicule for supporting a candidate whose only remaining supporters are those with strong idealogical ties who would never ever vote for a democrat.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyy

I Love Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Tim Russert. David Gregory and Dan Abrams are growing on me too but, Joe Scarborough & Pat Buchanan run luke warm or ice cold for me.

I love that Chris seems willing to take more risks by sharing his own special point of view rather than just repeating what other popular pundits are saying. I also like that he does play around a bit....and does not take these Opinion Stating interviews and polls all that seriously. This is not news....it is all opinion and speculation. Lighten-up and enjoy the fact that he is often very disarming with guests who underestimate his ability to truly play HARDBALL.

My observation is that he one of the ones who gets the echo machine going for the right wing. You didn't notice how he kept throwing things at Hillary for the haters to hang on to? Like her laugh, the way she does this, the way she does that. That's what makes him so dangerous -- he can fool people like you. Lighten-up -- no way!! this guy has got to go.

Thank god some of the people here get it.

CHRIS MATTHEWS lost me long ago--a retiree I am with time--but I switch of the new RACE,do
Oberman and watch the History Channel when Matthews comes on--he has become so arrogant
and aggressive as to just intrude or "nail down" people for no point but trying to force an answer
that can be twisted any direction he pleases.
He is simply blind on the subject of Hillary, and I don't think she could spell her name on TV without
him finding some cryptic purpose to it--Chris Matthews is a left-side blind bigot who is as rude to Left
people as Rush L.--there is absolutely no respect for opinion or re-statiang a guest's opinion with any
objectivity---it is just raw meat to chomp on. Please do get rid of him shortly--Rachel is better if she would slow down a might--anything--but just don't bring Ronald Reagan's son back , and keep Tucker
Carlson away from these vignettes--he is a chattering parrot without a serious view on any subject--
he looks for red=herrings and makes a science of them. J.McCormick--a disgusted awful Liberal

I love Chris Matthews! I tape his show when I'm not home. He's the only one who asks the tough questions, and doesn't let the pols get away with avoiding them. He's fun, and he's interesting. He's the only reason I watch MSNBC. Just because he engenders all this controversy is the reason to renew his contract! He has guts and convictions, and isn't afraid. So he makes mistakes; so what? I'm tired of canned talking heads. They're not worth watching.
And he was nice to Hillary for a long time. He got turned off, when we all did - when she got nasty and low level.

Please LEARN THE FACTS. Matthews has NEVER been nice to Senator Clinton, let alone FAIR. He has hated her for years. His hateful vitriol has been documented since the 90s. You are one gullible fool if you think Matthews hatred for Hillary has anything to do with this presidential race or with the truth. As well, you are even more gullible if you believe Matthews respects Senator Obama and his supporting him.
Read Matthew's history since the election between Bush and Gore. What he is doing to Senator Clinton now he did to Al Gore (only without the added layers of misogyny and sexism). And he will do the same to Senator Obama. Obamaniacs are being fools and being used by the right and Matthews, McCain lover that he is, will not hesitate to trash Obama in the GE.
