Patrick Gavin at FishbowlDC has obtained an advance copy of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine, which features a long, juicy profile of Chris Matthews by Mark Leibovich. In the piece, Matthews admits that MSNBC executives forced him to apologize for sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton and speculates that he would be an inviting target for a propaganda kidnapping, which is why he won't visit Syria.

The profile also reveals Matthews' deep job insecurity: his contract expires next year and "NBC officials seem bent on conveying the message that they could get the same ratings, or better ones, for considerably less" than the $5 million per year he gets now. Matthews is particularly suspicious of David Gregory, who is commonly perceived to be auditioning to be is replacement.

Leibovich also writes that "Matthews craves [Tim] Russert's approval like that of an older brother, but that "Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish....Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief."

Choice excerpts below, but visit FishbowlDC for more.

• As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isn't so funny now, is it?'"

• Matthews says the notion that he is sexist has been pushed unfairly by blogs, women's groups and, to some degree, the Clinton campaign. His remark that Clinton benefitted because her husband "messed around" triggered much outrage from the Clinton team. Matthews eventually apologized in a rambling on-air explanation, but he hardly sounds contrite now. "I was tonally inaccurate but factually true," he told me. I had asked him earlier if he was forced into the apology. "Oh, yeah, of course I was forced into that," he said, laughing. "No, no, no .... Phil [Griffin] asked me to do that."

• "By the way, have you figured me out yet?" Matthews said at the end of another phone conversation the following day. "You gotta understand, it's all complicated. It's not like Tim." Tim — as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" — is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

• A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief.

• According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann. Nor, according to network sources, has Olbermann bothered to hide his low regard for Matthews, although when I spoke to him, Olbermann denied any personal animosity toward Matthews and told me that he appreciates his "John Madden-like enthusiasm for politics."

How is it that Matthews has gotten away with his sexist remarks all these years? He is given money to be heard, and people don't recognize sexism, if they do they accept it! He and Keith, and several
other are intolerable! Time to put out the fire!

And trust me Mr. Mathews; you're not nearly important enough to even be considered a kidnapping target by any country on Earth.

The egos of these neo-conservative bottom feeders really cracks me up!

bravo--the only fear of kidnapping for Matthews would be from Cheney who might torture him
to stop pronouncing the ridiculous name as CHEE-nee--sounds like pet monkey or neutered ape
which might be an adequate label--but why not let CHAY-nee remain the horrible echo he is,
and concentrate on a little rage about him on our telephones instead of fussing about whether
Hillary alluded to Michelle's color. Disgusted--J.McCormick

Sorry James, CHEE-nee is the correct pronunciation. I know, I was surprised as well.

My favorite Mathews moment was when he went on The Daily Show but Jon Stewart didn't genuflect at the Alter of Mathews or his book "Life's a Campaign."
Nope...Jon Stewart gave Mr. Mathews taste of his own medicine by challenging the conclusion of Mathew’s book and low and behold, Mr. Mathews got upset.
Mathews was attacked in a much more civil manner by Jon Stewart than Mathews himself lays into people on his own show and poor 'whittle' Chris began pouting.

Chris Mathews...just another worthless "Do As I Say, Not As I Do Republican."

I'm of Matthews generation and I think he is a dinosaur when it comes to his attitudes toward women. I've watched him make remarks that make me cringe, I don't find his behavior toward guests conducive to discussion of any subject; he constantly interrupts, or answers his own question.
Were he to leave tomorrow it would not be a great loss for MSNBC.

Me too and I grew up in Philly not too far from Matthews except I was in a steel town while he was in a more affluent area. He was the classic, Irish Catholic preppie......nose looking down on everyone who wasn't him. His kind disgusted me then and disgust me even more now. He, Russert, Barnicle are of the same ilk....sexist pigs, out for themselves and totally obnoxious/

I really like Chris Matthews, warts and all. The very fact that he does not come off as 'canned' really appeals to me, he shows genuine emotion & a real passion for politics. I also really liked Tucker Carlson for the same reasons. I never agreed with him but I liked his style and personality. Although his showmanship is a bit 'too canned' at times, I don't mind Olberman but I have little time for Gregory or Abrams. But when ever Russert or Pat Buchanan comes on, I switch the channel immediately. If they are not racists they are certainly old white men entrenched in stereo types of African Americans. So as an 'old white woman' who thinks racist stereo-typing harms our country I refuse to tolerate it by giving them the benefit of adding to their viewer numbers.
Making Mathews apologize over a truthful Clinton observation while MSNBC continues to support the likes of Russert & Buchanan raises serious questions about MSNBC for me. I think Russert is an arrogant insider & I think he has a very nasty streak in him. His race based gamesmanship during the debates was too much for me! Russert is enough of an insider to know the question over Farakkan would unfairly taint Obama which is exactly what it did. Watching him brag about it after the fact, was disgusting. MSNBC has already lost a huge chunk of my viewing so if they lose Mathews they lose it all.

PAT BUCHANAN is the only reason I watch MCNBC--he makes it clear by a grasp of actual
philosophic method learned at a Jesuit (Catholic) college that there is a science to logic--and
seeing racism in any expression toward black patterns in this country is first of all illogical, and
secondly destructive of any real dialogue. Bring Pat back--and then try answering him some evening with a logical syllogism or two--a premise, and a conclusion based upon a premise.
It worked for Aristotle, for Newton, for Thomas Acquinas and maybe yourself. Gorman

Why this bottom feeder hack, is even on cable, is amazing. He is a slobbering moron, who suffers
from acute insecurity - obvious to all. His vile statements and obsession about Senator Clinton
borders on the pathological. Media Matters chronicled his exact quotes which include: " I hate
her, I hate her, look at those eyes - look at them." This guy is a punchline, a buffoon - Jon Stewart
mopped the floor with him. And grabbing Ellen's breasts while trying to dance with her, that alone
should be reason to kick this piece of crap to the curb.

Clintonistas play the sexism card on anyone who reports honestly about Billary, doesn't follow exactly the instructions of her campaign, who don't give their superdelegate votes to Hillary, or who trounce her soundly for the democratic nomination.

Of course he deserves a TV show. His man-love for every big time Republican candidate to come down the pike serves GE's interests well. Corporate selected and corporate owned.

I don't watch much cable news. I have to get it off the internet, so I don't have a lot to base my opinion on, but I sort of like Chris Matthews. Sure he puts his foot in his mouth once in a while, but doesn't seem to take pleasure in being mean like Tim Russert (I wasn't impressed by Russert at the debate.) David Gregory seems like a total lightweight; all hair.

As long as people are willing to stomach their idiotic drivel because they are harping on a comfortable attack subject then we get what we deserves- high priced media hacks with the intellectual skills of my son's goldfish.

Matthews can be brilliant one day and a complete buffoon the next? It's weird. And then there is this generational impediment that he can't seem to shake. And as far as his thing with the Hillary ... if anyone can find clips from when he was just a simple analyst with ABC, particularly when the Clintons first came into office, you would see the contempt he had for them then. It's not sexism, there is something else at the root of his disdain for Hillary.

Just because he harbors personal hate and vitriol for the Clintons, does not mean he is not an overt sexist, and does not use sexism along with his personal hate to dis Senator Clinton every chance he gets. He has been sexist on the air many times to many women. He doesn't get off the hook from that charge because he also has a personal vendetta going.

I agree. But the odd thing is that he was good when he first started and really did come off as a liberal then. Over the years, he's gotten wackier and weirder and more neo-con. It's so weird though, that he still acts as though the neocons are the other side, when in fact he spouts their crap all of the time.

Matthews strikes me as the white guy who votes for the republican over and over again, because those candidates legitimize their crass selfish jerk behavior. I think that's why he's still on the air----it's because he has a white guy following.

Sadly, Russert is an even bigger jerk than Matthews is. And talk about sexist! Yikes!

I do not know how ANY female journalists survive. That business seems to couch the remants of 50's sexism more than any other.....

I have MSNBC on pretty much all day. I'm here to say that David Gregory is great and I am glad he got his own show. I watch Hardball daily too and get infuriated at times but I usually like his guests and I always watch the Chris Matthews show every Sunday. I am a liberal political junkie so, of course I love Keith Olbermann. I used to really dislike Joe Scarborough but I find myself switching from C-Span's Washington Journal to watch Morning Joe. The most annoying person is Mika with her constant interruptions and stupid comments. MSNBC is looking great too with each show having distinctive graphics that really pop and are tasteful. All of the comments posted here are pretty critical so I wanted to show a little love.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:13 AM on 04/09/2008

I am here to say that David Gregory sucks and it was a mistake to give him his own show (unless of course that means he will no longer sub on Today but then again even that doesn't matter since I have moved to GMA now). Gregory is a bore, a snoozer, and stupidly biased.

I agree with you that Mika is the worst part of Morning Schmoe, especially considering that she is competing for the lowest rung with Schmoe Scarbore himself. I look forward to switching to Washington Journal from Morning Schmoe promptly at 6:59am, even when Greta is hosting and wearing her politics blatantly on her sleeves (apparently she was never explained that the show hosts are SUPPOSED to remain neutral on air). Greta could learn from Pedro, Susan, and Connie (where is she).

Olbermann? What's not to love once one gets over seeing the inflated O'reilly snake head almost daily during "Worst Persons".

If the comments are only "critical", it is because most posters are definitely being kind to MSNBC. They pretty much deserve a total blackout for all but five hours of the day (god save Olbermann, Matthews, Tamryn Hall, Andrea Mitchell, and the hour that was formerly owned by David Shuster and let the rest perish a thousand deaths). Have a wonderful day!

Warching Mika clean her teeth while she eats on TV is almost as disgusting as listening to Matthews rant about whatever he is obsessing about on any given day.I too am a C-Span watcher and have decided to skip MSNBC altogether in the morning.Infact I do not watch them at all anymore except David Gregory and the late edition of Olbermann if nothing else is on.I would rather watch C-Span and hear the facts from the actual people who say them then listen to the talking heads translation of them for me.

Mika is the ONLY reason I would even turn on Joe in the Morning. She is not the irritant in my book.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:43 AM on 04/09/2008

Maybe she is not an irritant to cavemen but most people don't "speak" in ONLY grunts, sighs, one-word whines, complete irrelevancies, and useless interruptions. Aside from reading the news poorly, she brings nothing substantive beyond thick makeup. It's as if she was only hired to serve as an annoying, ditsy cheerleader; hence Huckabee's reference to her pom poms.

We must agree to disagree on Schmika.

I read what you said about Mika B. I don't think her comments are stupid, I just don't think anything she says ever resonates. I think everyone should bring something unique to the show. She does sport some nice sweaters....

The most annoying "guest" is PAT BUCHANAN!!!!! If he was a woman his voice would be described as "shrill". And he gets so angry that his face turns red as he shrills out his right-wing comments! He is WAY PAST "annoying"!!!!!!

Gregory should stay where he is. Olbermann is the best (but the "Silly Segment" should go. ) Matthews is at times brilliant, but his talk-overs are annoying.
