Patrick Gavin at FishbowlDC has obtained an advance copy of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine, which features a long, juicy profile of Chris Matthews by Mark Leibovich. In the piece, Matthews admits that MSNBC executives forced him to apologize for sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton and speculates that he would be an inviting target for a propaganda kidnapping, which is why he won't visit Syria.

The profile also reveals Matthews' deep job insecurity: his contract expires next year and "NBC officials seem bent on conveying the message that they could get the same ratings, or better ones, for considerably less" than the $5 million per year he gets now. Matthews is particularly suspicious of David Gregory, who is commonly perceived to be auditioning to be is replacement.

Leibovich also writes that "Matthews craves [Tim] Russert's approval like that of an older brother, but that "Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish....Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief."

Choice excerpts below, but visit FishbowlDC for more.

• As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isn't so funny now, is it?'"

• Matthews says the notion that he is sexist has been pushed unfairly by blogs, women's groups and, to some degree, the Clinton campaign. His remark that Clinton benefitted because her husband "messed around" triggered much outrage from the Clinton team. Matthews eventually apologized in a rambling on-air explanation, but he hardly sounds contrite now. "I was tonally inaccurate but factually true," he told me. I had asked him earlier if he was forced into the apology. "Oh, yeah, of course I was forced into that," he said, laughing. "No, no, no .... Phil [Griffin] asked me to do that."

• "By the way, have you figured me out yet?" Matthews said at the end of another phone conversation the following day. "You gotta understand, it's all complicated. It's not like Tim." Tim — as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" — is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

• A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief.

• According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann. Nor, according to network sources, has Olbermann bothered to hide his low regard for Matthews, although when I spoke to him, Olbermann denied any personal animosity toward Matthews and told me that he appreciates his "John Madden-like enthusiasm for politics."

Jack Hardy - I Ought to Know
part one
I ought to know more than I know
I ought to know where this road goes
I ought to know great literature by heart
the history of art
this I ought to know

I ought to know more than 1492
I ought to know what the Buffalo Bills do
I ought to know more than the quarterback's wounded knee
what happened at Sand Creek
this I ought to know
but I don't

I ought to know about the sacrifices made
I ought to know ration stamps, air raids
I ought to know more than George C. Scott
and John Wayne get shot
this I ought to know

I ought to know what the drinking gourd means
I ought to know more than "I have a dream"
I ought to know about the back of the bus
and the crack of billy clubs
this I ought to know
but I don't

(chorus:)
I don't know nothing about nothing
but I'm proud to stand upright
I don't know nothing about nothing
but my future looks so bright
illumined by the light
laugh-tracks, soundbites
and a replay to get it right
I ought to know

part two
I ought to know the songs of Joe Hill
I ought to know Trotsky, Marx and Hagel
I ought to know about the Haymarket hangings
and the H.U.A.C.
this I ought to know

I ought to know about Oliver Cromwell
I ought to know about the Gnostics and St. Paul
I ought to know what Jesus really said
and who the preacher takes to bed
this I ought to know
but I don't

I ought to know what's buried in the landfill
I ought to know about the clear-cutting bills
I ought to know about pipelines and schemes
what extinction really means
this I ought to know

I ought to know for whom the bell tolls
I ought to know the pride and prejudice of polls
I ought to know if the grapes of wrath are union
picked by Victor Jara's hands
this I ought to know
but I don't

(repeat chorus)

Forget about Mathews, he's big fish in a small pond. I want to talk about Russert.
Maybe because I used to watch the really great ones in the news business, I am not impressed with Russert. The best that I can say about Russert is that he compares favorably with a lot of todays pundits, in that he prepares for his interviews with care.
However, in comparison to the greats of the past, he is a genuinely small man. Just recently, he has been fawning over Republicans that he likes, and then gloating with Mathews when he embarasses Clinton.
I think it is absolutely and completely legitimate to embarass politicians by exposing lies, incompetence, corruption, and stupidity. But to display personal animosity or favoritism toward politicians is not the job of a journalist, unless it is done openly and without the pretense of impartiality. At least with someone like Bill O'Reilly, we can dismiss the pretense that he is a ligitimate journalist out of hand. Russert is much better at pretending to be a journalist, but is happy to be an entertainer.

Matthews is a small fish in big pond; he's a joke. Russert is so full of himself that it is sickening. His "preparation" for interviews mainly involves compiling a silly list of "gotcha" questions. He never gets into any serious issues. Both he and Chrissy-boy are GOP butt-lickers, especially for senile old McCain. They are absolutes DISGRACES to journalism in general and NBC in particular. Both of them, along with that godawful bleach-bag Andrea Mitchell, should be jettisoned.

bottom line is that all of these cable talk shows (not news shows) are shallow, and the talking heads love to hear the sounds of their own voices. matthews is just one more grating bit of noise. and he admires whatever he perceives as masculine. nothing wrong with that, but he allows it to prejudice his pronouncements. he gushed over the sock-in-the-crotch action figure bush, landing on the mission accomplished aircraft carrier. GI Joke and all that matell stuff.

SCAROROUGH is the neo of the neo deep inside...he is in the same field as Pat Buchanan who make their living by dividing folks by class, religion, race and gender. Joe is a foregone conclusion that is why he is in the morning.

Chris Matthews needs to be kicked to the curb. Everyone needs to remember that Chris learned politics by wiping the puke off Tip O'Neill's shoes. Chris is an old fashioned Boston Irish Dem who loves a good deal made in a smoky back room. Sadly Matthews is still fawning over stupid old Republican Daddies like Pappa Bush, John McCain, James Baker, etc. Those Boston Irish Catholic boys like Chris can't help but be sexist -- women fall into two categories for them Mom & the nuns or
WILFs. I guess maybe there is another category -- women I am allowed to openly despise i.e. Hillary.
Women scare the crap out of horny, uptight Catholic school boys like Matthews. Matthews sexism is partially due to his Catholic education -- too much Thomas Aquinas. Matthews (like Russert) is typical for his generation. Matthews finds women intellectually inferior but his attraction to them is so overpowering that they must be blamed for "bewitching" him with their feminine wiles. So much of Aquinas's view of women was based on his own fear of his lust. Aquinas blames women for men's lustful interests. So does Chris Matthews. Matthews gets completely distracted when he finds a female guest sexually attractive. Matthews the adolescent horny boy takes over -- of course he can't take anything this object of his lust says seriously. Thus she is there for his amusement. Watch him.
Listen to him. His lust and inability to control it becomes her fault.

Well, that pretty much does it. When you're seen as clownish and a loose cannon by the Clown-in-Chief, your number's up.

Cheers, Tweety. We hardly knew ye. Any way you can take Gaseous Blovius with you?

Russert is a clown himself...in fact he looks like made in China but he is still number 1, Chris following him at #2 spot. Of course there will be competition her. the #1 guy trying to stay at number 1 and the number #2 guy trying to over take #1 spot. What would you expect Russert to say...embrace him with open arm and tell him come take my spot. Hello...let's not be naive.

Matthews is more than a little nuts but never boring. He does seem to hate Hillary which is kind of annoying, and tiresome, even if I don't always love her either. But I'd much rather him than the ignorant Glen Becks or Lou Dobbs of the world or even worse the smug Anderson Coopers or Tim Russerts.

It's a common complaint but I don't think he hates Hillary at all. He gets so wound up in the politics and policies of various politicians, he often blurts dumb things. But the thing is, he blurts dumb things about everyone at one time or another. I've certainly heard him say some things about Obama that I find very grating but then he turns around the next minute and says something worshipful. I find he does the same thing with Hillary. He has certainly given her many glowing compliments but Hillary and all her supporters are so deep into their victimization, they never hear the good things he says.

I don't think he hates Hillary at all. I think he gets as excited about her as he gets about...well, the other people who excite him. It's just in this schoolyard kind of way, with her. I mean, there are a lot of male pundits roughly his age (usually somewhat younger though) out there that I think do have that whole "Powerful middle-aged women in pantsuits give me mommy-flashbacks so I have to revile her utterly" thing with Hillary but I don't think that's it with Chris. Hillary flusters him.

Now yes, it's unfortunate that he seems to have a limited number of available responses to females, but I find Chris being flustered - which at least suggests he sees her as something of an age-group peer rather than a mother figure - less repulsive than someone else working out their hatred of their mom via Hillary.

Anderson Cooper worse than Glenn Beck? Cooper's greatest crime is that he's vacuous and bland. It's like comparing dry toast to tripas.

Success ruins these newscasters. I used to love Anderson Cooper. Now, you're right, he is smug - perfect word. And I used to love Olbermann, now I can't stand to watch him, he is so full of himself. Tim Russert is a jerk - someone said it perfectly above - a bunch of "gotcha" questions The best thing about Chris Matthews is his inconsistency. He can at least sometimes be enjoyable to watch.

Keep Chris. He is flawed. He is professional. He's a loose cannon. He knows what he is talking about. He's a bundle of contradictions. But, at least he isn't David Gregory. We have sterile, unchallenging news all day.

Or, don't keep Chris. Then give us Rachel Maddow!!!!!! We need coverage from people who know what they are talking about. In fact, keep Chris, Keith, and add Rachel to David Gregory's time slot.

MSNBC without Chris Matthews. Strange to contemplate. Here is my line up:

Keith - The best on cable!
Rachael Maddow - She is a jewel and they need to give her whatever she wants!
David Shuster, Eugene Robinson, Howard Fineman, are all great.
Nora is really good, too.
I kind of like Chris just because he is a loose cannon and unpredictable.
Dan Abrams is interesting, especially when he handles legal issues

Please dump that arrogant idiot Joe Scarbourough, but find a place for Willy Geist.
Andre Mitchell - So friggin' boring!
David Gregory - Does nothing for me. Even thought Mathews is a little nutty, I like him better than Gregory.
Pat Buchanan has to go.

I'm sure MSNBC will take my suggestions very seriously!

Why all the animosity towards Morning Joe? I actually started watching MSNBC more because of him. I find him to be the most honest of the rightwing bunch, and while he holds on to dear life to his conservative stance (and I don't fault him for that at all), he is the only one of the lot who will call a spade a spade. I think it's a mistake to only tune in to the people who we agree with all of the time. I often wander over to FOX (eegads, yes, I do!), only to learn what's going on in their heads. It's often scary, but sometimes enlightening. And I think Joe makes the "other side" more human. Plus I think he's cute (OK, that was just wrong and has no place in mature analysis, but there you have it!).

Plus he's arrogant enough to call you out BS, but not in an alienating way. (Keith cleans them all up haha) He's no blank staring potato head neither- alot gets lost in his manner of communication but he's sharp on political awareness and his historical prowess is just way above some others that come to mind (Wolf, Anderson....yuck)
