Patrick Gavin at FishbowlDC has obtained an advance copy of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine, which features a long, juicy profile of Chris Matthews by Mark Leibovich. In the piece, Matthews admits that MSNBC executives forced him to apologize for sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton and speculates that he would be an inviting target for a propaganda kidnapping, which is why he won't visit Syria.

The profile also reveals Matthews' deep job insecurity: his contract expires next year and "NBC officials seem bent on conveying the message that they could get the same ratings, or better ones, for considerably less" than the $5 million per year he gets now. Matthews is particularly suspicious of David Gregory, who is commonly perceived to be auditioning to be is replacement.

Leibovich also writes that "Matthews craves [Tim] Russert's approval like that of an older brother, but that "Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish....Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief."

Choice excerpts below, but visit FishbowlDC for more.

• As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isn't so funny now, is it?'"

• Matthews says the notion that he is sexist has been pushed unfairly by blogs, women's groups and, to some degree, the Clinton campaign. His remark that Clinton benefitted because her husband "messed around" triggered much outrage from the Clinton team. Matthews eventually apologized in a rambling on-air explanation, but he hardly sounds contrite now. "I was tonally inaccurate but factually true," he told me. I had asked him earlier if he was forced into the apology. "Oh, yeah, of course I was forced into that," he said, laughing. "No, no, no .... Phil [Griffin] asked me to do that."

• "By the way, have you figured me out yet?" Matthews said at the end of another phone conversation the following day. "You gotta understand, it's all complicated. It's not like Tim." Tim — as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" — is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

• A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief.

• According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann. Nor, according to network sources, has Olbermann bothered to hide his low regard for Matthews, although when I spoke to him, Olbermann denied any personal animosity toward Matthews and told me that he appreciates his "John Madden-like enthusiasm for politics."

Having read the many post here about all the msnbc gum bumpers I would gladly trade the entire lot and throw in $20 for Phil Donahue. msnbc should bring him back, the man knows how to bring intelligence to talk shows. He was a money maker for them, not that they deserved him.

I thought that too, until I saw Donhaue's answers last night to Dan Abram's questions about the war and the last 7 Cheney/Bush years. His answers were off-point. Just about every one missed the opportunity to hit the target where it should have been hit; he kept veering off to the sidelines. For instance, when Abrams asked him what he thought about Cheney basically saying he didn't care what 75% of the American public thinks (against the war), Donahue didn't talk about the hubris of power or Cheney's fascistic undemocratic proclivities, but launched into a discussion of the pain the returned vets are going through, a worthy topic, but off point.

I rarely watch that show, don't care for Dan. I can only guess that Phil would rather spend the limited time allowed on something worth while. That would not be dickhead cheney. We have seen that nothing is going to slow him down, certainly not the dems, so talking about him is wasted time. I agree with your thought on our fascist nation, it is becoming more apparent every day. I have watched the dvd video 'the moneymasters', it explains a lot about our failed news media. It is not going to get any better until we abolish the federal reserve, take control of our currency and move toward a much more socialist system.

Chris Matthews, David Gregory, and Joe Scarborough all need to go. Rachel Maddow, David Shuster, and Phil Donohue should replace them.

I so agree... drop Matthews, Gregory and ESPECIALLY Joe! (Now I hit the mute button whenever I seeJoe's squinty eyes and he opens his mouth - usually to interrupt other guests or take over Gregory's show.)

Rachel Maddow is brilliant, entertaining, and captivating. I'm surprised MSNBC hasn't hired her for her own show. There's something about her smile and tone of voice that makes me think that everything's going to all right when I don't really think it will be for generations to come... thank you very much crooks and liars of the bush administration.

1. CHRIS "I am what Geraldine Ferraro was talking about, yes, I admit, I am caught up in this concept of hardballin' at college campuses, shhh, don't tell my wife, those hot co-eds are the ones who actually give me the shivers" MATTHEWS.

2. KEITH "o'reilly has nothing on me, I have actually been the worst person in the world this whole time" OLBERMANN.

Both of these so called journalists are more than clowns, they are frauds, they show their Obama bias every evening, so I stopped watching a while back. Morning Joe is more balanced, give the slot to Joe Scarborough and let Pat Buchanan come on as guest (never thought as a dem. I would say that), but, Buchanan is fair and balanced compared to those clowns Matthews and Olbermann.

*Matthews at $5 Million is way overpaid, heck give his wife-Kathleen the slot, she is much better to look at and far more professional, then he can't complain about Hillary.*

Fair and balanced is not journalism it's stupidity. The point is for a journalist to tell the truth and be fair about the facts. Being balanced is manipulating the news in almost every circumstance. If they do a story on the earth being round...you'd probably want someone who says it's flat on

There is a narrow range of issues (the war in Iraq is one) upon which true conservatives (not neocons) and liberals agree. That's Buchanan's appeal. He doesn't resort often to the blanket demonizing rhetoric of liberals that we hear so often from the right-wing. His sister could take some lessons from him in toning down the rhetoric.

Buchanan has the ability, unlike many on the right and the left, to throw one of his own over the side. There is an honesty and integrity in that, to being true to a principle and not just a knee-jerk to the political party. In 2000, admitting as soon as the results came out that it was unlikely that 20,000 Jews in West Palm Beach, Florida voted for him? That took chops.

What can I say, I'm a MSNBC junkie. Love Chris, Keith, Rachel, David Schuster, Andrea Mitchell, Jonathan Alter, Howard Fineman, Morning Joe and, even though I don't agree with anything Pat Buchanan says, I like him too!
Chris Matthews and David Schuster did an excellent job during the Scooter Libby trial. And, I think Keith and Chris make it work covering the primary returns. And, like a previous poster said: Chuck Todd rules!
Long live MSNBC THE place for politics

Yeah, I am totally hooked on MSNBC, and agree with everything you have mentioned except....
1. Morning Joe is going downhill fast and is starting to feel like Scarborough Country, Mika could do a better job. I Tivo most of these shows daily.

2. Pat B. is amazing, he just has a tin ear on race.

Matthews is the best, he and Schuster got a raw deal from the terror of Tuzla.

This bozo gets $5mm?! What a joke! He doesn't deserve the money for a hack of a job he is doing at MSNBC/NBC. He is a bully and a loud mouth. I hope they cancel his ass out of NBC and get someone reputable.

Hah.... I dare MSNBC to drop Chris... CNN wil pick him up in a minute. They need Chris to balance out the LOU Dobbs and Glenn Beck on their shows, except Chris is more of a journalist than a pundit.... Ask of someone who lives and breaths politics and Chris is the one. Don't always agree with him, but i respect him.

Chris Matthews and Nora O'Donnell are the only reasons I watch MSNBC. As far as I'm concerned nobody comes close to them. I think they should both get a good pay raise. ..................................Regarding Keith Olbermann - I think he's too much of a screamer and I turn off TV when he's on. Chris and Nora however are the best!!!!!!!

NBC would be foolish to lose Chris Matthews. It is his love and respect for politics, and his ability to incorporate history into his analyses of current events, that make him such a great host. I am a big Chris Matthews fan.

Tweety is a mass of man-crush neuroses: the funniest thing was his appearance for his latest book on Jon Stewart's show, when Stewart handed his hat to him over the book's Machiavellian themes. Tweety was totally flummoxed. I also can't join the chorus of love for Rachel Maddow, the MSNBC house lesbian. She is intolerant of any opinions other than her own and is the mere liberal side of the same coin that Sean Hannity is on for the conservatives. I don't blame Joe Scarborough for disliking her intensely (as he obviously does). I do think she's go straight for Keith O. however -- they're always maklng goo-goo eyes at each other and Keith even let her host Countdown last week.

Dr. Maddow is a goddess and destined to be a TV star -- comparing a literal Rhodes Scholar with a doctorate from Oxford like her to a boneheaded Neanderthal like Hannity is like comparing Edward R. Murrow to Larry King. She did splendidly in Olbermann's rapid fire wiseass format, and she'd be even better if she could do TV in something closer to the relaxed, informative, good humored, always entertaining style she's developed in radio. Both she and Olbermann live with their steady girlfriends, so your prurient "goo-goo eyes" fantasy is just that -- sorry!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:56 AM on 04/09/2008

Having a doctorate doesn't mean Maddow has any common sense. Her constant head-wagging when anyone else is trying to make a point that conflicts with her own is just plain rude. Maddow lives in a world where her ideas are the only ones that count. In that sense, she is just like Sean Hannity, Ph.D or no.

Tim Russert got it right. This guys talks so much. He asks a question then talks so much the person really does not have a chance to answer. he talks so much his brain can not catch up then he says something totally ignorant. It becomes torture to watch him.

Chris Matthews can be good some days and really bad other days. He can be too aggressive in his interviewing, scaring some guests. One time he used this military interrogation tone and behaved like a jerk, the guest should have told him to f.o. , I know I would.
Gregory is a huge bore and his panels are awful with all the shouting going on.
Of course Keith Olbermann delivers the best half hour of the day, brilliant, informative, opinionated, always go deeper than the other news, has amazing journalists on and doesn't have the need to be "balanced" and invite opposing views. Chris could learn a thing or two from Chris and research more his news.

I'll take Matthews over Russert any day. Sure, Matthews can be a little crazy at times, but he's always entertaining and interesting. Russert, on the other hand, just leaves you feeling like you wasted an hour of your day.

I love Chris and all the MSNBC shows except Verdict. I usually DVR both of Tim Russert's shows. That way I can speed through the boring parts. I usually get through it in about 15 or 20 minutes.

matthews is a very bright man, who is struggling to keep pace with the "video game" nonsense that has taken over the news with respect to verbal jousting and graphics. 2000 through 2005, I found Chris to be very compelling, intelligent, and engaging. As I've become a bit more informed, I find his coverage/questions a bit too scripted and high-level. IMO, Chris used to flavor his questions with more policy angles than he does today; I dunno whether it was writing the book or some other gravitation to the "game," but the coverage of 'politic' is becoming less-and-less interesting/compelling/important to me that a real, substantive analysis of the policy ...

I think what I like most about Matthews is his absolute passion for politics. This is probably what gets him into trouble every once in awhile. It's also what occasionally drives me nuts. All-in-all I think he's good to have on television.

I think liberals need to be careful not to get into a "if you're not 100% with us, you're against us" attitude when it comes to the media. If liberals push that agenda then we may get more Chris Wallaces and Brit Humes.
