Patrick Gavin at FishbowlDC has obtained an advance copy of this coming Sunday's New York Times Magazine, which features a long, juicy profile of Chris Matthews by Mark Leibovich. In the piece, Matthews admits that MSNBC executives forced him to apologize for sexist remarks against Hillary Clinton and speculates that he would be an inviting target for a propaganda kidnapping, which is why he won't visit Syria.

The profile also reveals Matthews' deep job insecurity: his contract expires next year and "NBC officials seem bent on conveying the message that they could get the same ratings, or better ones, for considerably less" than the $5 million per year he gets now. Matthews is particularly suspicious of David Gregory, who is commonly perceived to be auditioning to be is replacement.

Leibovich also writes that "Matthews craves [Tim] Russert's approval like that of an older brother, but that "Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish....Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief."

Choice excerpts below, but visit FishbowlDC for more.

• As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isn't so funny now, is it?'"

• Matthews says the notion that he is sexist has been pushed unfairly by blogs, women's groups and, to some degree, the Clinton campaign. His remark that Clinton benefitted because her husband "messed around" triggered much outrage from the Clinton team. Matthews eventually apologized in a rambling on-air explanation, but he hardly sounds contrite now. "I was tonally inaccurate but factually true," he told me. I had asked him earlier if he was forced into the apology. "Oh, yeah, of course I was forced into that," he said, laughing. "No, no, no .... Phil [Griffin] asked me to do that."

• "By the way, have you figured me out yet?" Matthews said at the end of another phone conversation the following day. "You gotta understand, it's all complicated. It's not like Tim." Tim — as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" — is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

• A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBC's Washington bureau chief.

• According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann. Nor, according to network sources, has Olbermann bothered to hide his low regard for Matthews, although when I spoke to him, Olbermann denied any personal animosity toward Matthews and told me that he appreciates his "John Madden-like enthusiasm for politics."

Chris is a pain sometime and Ionder how anyone can sit close to him when he is talking. But I love him. Russert is a pompous over rated blowheart. Keith is the other half of the duo I must walk everynight. Really glad they ditched Tucker he reminded me of a guy who had few playmates when he was a child. Wish they would give Chris the morning time slot currently held by Morning Jerk.

Agree. Whatever they pay Russert, he's not worth it. Also Joe Scarborough used to be much more balanced. Don't Tivo him any more. Used to love Phil Donohue. He was the only one who stood up to the powers that be. I'm sure that's why he lost his show as his ratings were great. If you have courage, don't apply!

Almost everyone is missing the key point is my conclusion after reading most (but not all) of the comments above. As amply documented by Bob Somerby at The Daily Howler (www.dailyhowler.com) over the past 10 years, Matthews, Russert, Williams, Brokow, Gregory and the entire crew are multi-multi-millionaires paid well push their themes: Gore/ phony, Kerry/elite, Clinton/bitch, Edwards/haircuts, etc. Picking amongst them is as quaint as my childhood game with my brother deciding whether our favorite gas company was Esso or Conoco. Let's get real.

The other factor here is that only two networks have cable channels: NBC and Fox. CBS and ABC are out of it, though that doesn't mean that they don't tilt the news. But the key thing is that since Fox is clearly the right-wing channel, so-called progressives have only one outlet to fame and fortunte via their speeches, books, punditry and other big buck$$ shenanigans: toady up to Russert, Matthews, Imus, etc. -- and never, ever dare to dispute or contradict their nonsense, or else be forever condemened to the purgatory of honest journalists with no speeches or book contracts, out of The Village.

I like Rusert and think he is a sharp guy, but too often his guests talk and talk without saying anything, and he's content with it. Just because Mathews has a sense of humor doesn't mean that he doesn't take his job serious. He actually manages to cut through layers of insider BS, which Russert's serious approach usually can't. Most people on TV like Wolf Blitzer don't even have a clue as to what is BS and what isn't. In a world of brain-dead talking heads Mathews is a rare treat.

Chris has nothing to worry about from David Gregory as a host competitor.
His new show is horrible in both format and graphics.
He was great as an investigative reporter but this just isn't working.
David needs to get a better producer and start reporting again because as of now I know 6 MSNBC freaks that have stopped watching his show between Chris and Keith.
And they used to put up with Tucker, even if it was just to mock him.

Matthews is a clown but Russert is not much better. I hope they don't renew his contract and promote a real journalist like David Schuster.

well said .. Russert is weak and is losing it; he's no longer insightful and not many of these guys bring any real perspective or data to the task anymore. They report what the NYT reports ... orginial ideas or framing these pols, their accomplishments in the context of history (say the past 30 - 40 years) is beyond them. sad, really.

I find it astonishing that anyone would pay Mathews $5 million dollars are year for making an ass of himself...perhaps that's why they pay him (the clownish factor).

Whoever that group is that kidnapped Tweetie would release him within the first hour. All that spitting and drooling would be the only weapon he would need to get released quickly. His ego is as big as his mouth and if I were running MSNBC I would let that contract run out and replace this fool with Rachel Maddow pronto. His heart belongs to McCain and they share the same dislike of women which is another reason I can't stand him. Chris, by all means go to Syria. And for God's sake don't leave Tim at home.

I would absolutely LOVE to see Rachel Maddow get her own show. She's brilliant. Unfortunately, I missed her guest host spot on Countdown last week.

Matthews makes politics great sport. I love the guy. Matthews peppers guests with questions until he gets a real answer.

Russert used to be good but now he's just about selling books - mostly his own - and I resent it.

How can anyone love this fat, obnoxious, loud mouthed, pea brained, groveling, slobbering, 'leg tingleing', insulting, ellen groping idiot? Just answer that.

MSNBC has the most interesting group of pundits. keith olbermann is funny as the dickens, even with his bill o obsession. his extended comments are moving at times, and his nightly reminder of the days since 'mission accomplished" is stunning. chuck todd is a great number cruncher, and explains polls very clearly. and the richard wolffe and jonathan alter from newsweek are great! nora o'donnell is interested and interesting, and has the best laugh in television. rachel maddow is great too...a word about pat buchannan....when he was running for president, i disagreed with every position he took. however, i had the sense that nobody was telling him what to say. goofy or not, he presented his thoughts. he was/is someone who thinks, and we need people who think about things even if we disagree with them. but some of the folks on FoxNews are beyond nutty, and nearly rabid. i don't think they are as "fair and balanced" as they are "fairly imbalanced".....i like joe, chris, tucker and dan. it is a great network and i think the folks at MSNBC would be a whole bunch more fun to hang out with than folks at FoxNews or CNN.

God, I have to watch Fox with a remote in hand because I get so angry. There is no integrity there, and I really wonder how Chris Wallace ended up there (silly question, they pay him to be Mike Wallace's son). If I were at an MSNBC party, I'd have some wine and enjoy myself. If I were at a Fox News party, I'd be surreptitiously taping everyone to show the staff of MSNBC later.

I switched over to Fox out of curiosity yesterday to see how they were covering the hearings, and they were talking about Britney Spears.

Chris Matttews deserves 10 million a year. He has a dynamite personality and a first rate mind. (Which probably offends a lot of the anti-Matthews posters.)

I also enjoyed his book "Life's A Campaign". Very insightful.

I also like Shuster. Loved his comment about Princess Chelsea. (Either you keep your kid out of the spotlight or you use them. If you use them, they have to be asked questions like every other "celeb". If not, their privacy should be respected.)

The combination of Andrea Mitchell and Howard Fineman is reporting at its best.

CHUCK TODD RULES!!!!

Does anyone remember about a month ago, Chuck Todd wore his glasses for like a week? I swear, it was because he had pink eye in his right eye. It was so distracting. I thought I was going crazy, like, is he going to wear glasses all of the time from now on? But I think it was just to deflect from his pink eye, because the delegate whisperer couldn't be out sick.

Chris Matthews is crazy? No, you don't say. It's just not getting through to the bosses at MSNBC. We know he's crazy and that's why some of us like him. (Judging by the responses here more people than I thought. Kind of figured I was one of the few who could tolerate him.)

Olbermann is right. He is the John Madden of MSNBC. Rambling, big, sometimes a little weird but he knows his politics like Madden knows football. Ultimately I bet MSNBC keeps him, controversy gets ratings. Plus who wants things to get too dull? Take him with a grain of salt if you want, but don't try to replace him just cause he gets controversial. He also has a weird habit of being right.

Chris Matthews is the pits. He is not a journalist but an overpaid political pundit who shills for Obama shamelessly. The same thing could be said for Olbermann. David Gregory has been a revelation-he is one of the few on MSNBC who is fair and balanced. I watch Chris Matthews to get my blood boiling and have an excuse for spewing some expletives. Tim Russert, Brian Williams, Hannity and Colmes are also quite balanced. The BBC's Steven Sackur is my kind of an ideal journalist. He skewers all his guests from a point of view that is the exact opposite of his guests.

"HANNITY and colmes are also quite balanced." Lol. Yes. They showed both the Black Panthers and 10 seconds of J. Wright every night for a month. It's like having a show with Mussolini representing the Fascists and a Mime representing the Socialists.

You need to have an adult sit down beside you and explain the news to you as you watch it. Matthews is a loose canon. Sometimes on, sometimes completely off the mark. Olbermann has a big ego, but politically he has a passion for the truth and it makes him an honest broker. Tim Russert has a big head both physically and figuratively. He leans to the right, as does Brian Williams. Hannity and Colmes is pure propaganda, old style performances. Colmes is the paid Charley McCarthy. Hannity wants to be Rush. There is no news, no truth, no intellect there at all. You want good news, listen to the first half of Olbermann, Schuster and Maddow and Robinson and Alter when they are on. Listen to Bill Moyers and David Broncochio on PBS and read some decent journalists like Herbert, Rich, Lichtreau, etc. Then you will have some idea of what is really going on in the world. Cruse the web. Soon you will be able to sort the fruit and find the good stuff.

MSNBC is by far the most entertaining of the cable news networks. I enjoy their hosts and their guest choices. Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are excellent, passionate and entertaining. I enjoyed Tucker and miss his show. Joe Scarborough is damn good too. The weakest link is David Gregory, who is a bit of a monotone shrill and does not add a lot.

You have it all wrong. David Gregory and Nora O'Donnell are the only ones left that give any kind of credibility to MSNBC. They are the only "straight up political reporters" on that network. Chich Todd has no peers. He is cool. Morning Joe and Mika are great too. The real revelation on MSNBC is talking head Joan Walsh. She is by far the smartest commentator on television with the most objective, honest, no spin answers. She puts them all to shame. They should hire her to replace bloviating Matthews. And Rachel Maddow should take over KOs show. Keith has narcissistic personality disorder. He is a bigger self-promoter than BillO!

I can't understand why guests on Tweety's show don't tell him to shut up when they're replying to him or making a comment as he interrupts them in the middle of a sentence???? This clown is a disgrace to honest journalism! How long will he continue to have that racist boor, Pat"I Love Nixon" Buchanan on his show??? What does that say about his judgement??? Maybe the malaria effected his mental stability!
