As the Democratic Presidential hopefuls approach Pennsylvania's Apr. 22 vote, Senator Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) campaign, trailing in statewide polls, is set to get a shot in the arm. Later this week, a small band of independent Obama supporters plans to launch another new fund-raising Web site, AnObamaMinute.com, with the goal of raising $1 million dollars in one minute.

Last week the Obama camp announced it had raised $40 million in March alone, nearly twice the amount raised by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) during the same period. In all, he has raised some $234 million. Through February, Clinton's campaign had raised $156 million.

From Jim Geraghty at "The Campaign Spot":
****************

There's a Word for Obama's 'Parallel Public Financing System': Private.

Back in February, the Washington Post said that Barack Obama was starting to "waffle" on public financing, which he had pledged to take if the Republican candidate did so as well. McCain said he was game, but because his fundraising had been going so well, Obama suggested he was having second thoughts.

Well, Obama's not waffling anymore. Now he's more or less coming out and saying that his public pledges meant nothing.

The Post said his previous commitment was "unequivocal."

Now he says, "We have created a parallel public financing system where the American people decide if they want to support a campaign they can get on the Internet and finance it, and they will have as much access and influence over the course and direction of our campaign that has traditionally been reserved for the wealthy and the powerful."

Obama had the audacity to announce his breaking of his public financing pledge before a $2,300 per head fundraising dinner. Really, when are the members of the press going to call horsepuckey on this?

By a "parallel public financing system," Obama means that he is getting a lot of money from private donors. If this is "public", then every other candidate who has ever run for office has used a "parallel public financing system" too.

Come on, Senator. Don't tell me words don't matter.

McCain opted into public financing for the primaries, but was unable to opt out because the FEC doesn't have a full quorum. No bother - he just went on to spend WAY over the limit anyway.

The National Review saying that he's "game" should be taken with a grain of salt. Right now he's a scofflaw.

To all of you saying he should give his campaign money to the poor:

He didn't create the system... he's just operating in it, as he has to, in order to win. And it looks like he just might....

" Obama"s S.E.I.U. Boost in Pennsylvania "

By Leslie Wayne April 7, 2008, 1:52 pm New York Times

Pennsylvania"s economy may get a welcome boost thanks to deep-pocketed supporters of Senator Barack Obama. The Service Employees International Union and an affiliated health-care local are pumping a combined $976,000 into the state for salaries and literature that are part of a pro-Obama door-to-door canvassing campaign.

"Obama Spending More On Pennsylvania Ads Than Any Candidate -- Ever"

(Closed after only 20 comments... guess it suddenly dawned that one doesn't read so well)

$2.2 Million a week on ads in PA, huh?

"Outspending every politician ever", huh?

Nothing like a natural, spontaneous groundswell for "hope" and "change" among the enchanted masses... bought by an ad agency with unlimited funds, in between spots for the Ab Roller and the guy screaming at you to buy OxiClean.

Didn't realize "change" was such a hard sell... and all for just a few points in PA.

Yes, we can. Money Talks.

Will he consent to give that $1 million away to the poor?

How about the $40 million?

"Of those to whom much is given, much is required."

"When you did this to the very least of these your brothers, you did it unto Me."

"Oh, how hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of (the) god!"

I would wager my future earnings that if he were to do one of the following, he could secure his presidential campaign's funding and the nomination, tomorrow:

1) Sign an online contract agreeing to refund all donations if he does not make good on his campaign promises and, or;

2) At campaigns end, distribute whatever monies remain, evenly, to all who donated.

On a more serious note, I hope he realizes how many are putting their true faith in him. In thinking of it these past weeks, I've pondered just how disappointed his constituents will be if he wins the general and fails to deliver. There would be, I imagine, a deep sense of hurt and disillusionment; it would border on the personal. Like the nerdy freshman who allows herself to be wooed by the presumptive prom king and suddenly realizes his advances have been a ruse to perpetrate some cruel, twisted joke - hearts, minds will be absolutely crushed, hopes will be dashed and, unfortunately, the US will never again entertain the notion of an African-American president.

Are you a prophet? If not, how do you know that "the US will never again blah, blah, blah. You know here's the really weird thing - you probably don't see anything wrong with your opinion. Are you admitting that this country is racist at it's core and will never change. Because your statement sure does sound like it. If not, then you by your reasoning the US will never elect another white president, given the current person in the White House.

Hmmmm...let's see now, both Hillary and McCain have longstanding ties to white clergymen (Doug Coe - Hillary / Hagee - McCain) who espouse elitist, sexist, homophobic, anti-semitic, racist, views. Just because these preachers hatred doesn't spew forth in the form of fiery sermons, doesn't make it less reprehensible. Yet MSM has examined these spiritual advisors to what extent? So, yes, Sabreen60, when I see this double standard coupled with the fact that Hillary is a) a proven liar (NAFTA, Bosnia, her White House exp./influence ) who: b) would embrace the same ultra-conservative Penn. billionaire editor that accused her and her husband of murder, c) stills carries the stench of Whitewater - AND DESPITE ALL THIS she's still in the race, the idea that blacks are held to a different and higher standard is apparent, it does make America appear racist at its core - to me, anyway - and if snipets, taken out of context, from 2 rhetorical sermons condemning US foreign and domestic policy, can derail a nominee, I have very little hope that things will change anytime soon.

And like how in the hell would you know if America would EVER vote for an African American again. Have you been living as long as Methuselah? Are you planning on being around for another thousand of years? God these people claming to be a prophet or the Oracle of Delphi...all this f-ing hyperbole...geez

Why does he need so much money? He's outspending every politician ever to have run in Penn.

Excessive spending isn't necessarily good.

If Obama were truly a candidate of hope and change he wouldn't need to spend so much money to promote himself. Truly good works speak for themselves.

There is such a thing as over exposure. Too much advertising is overkill. However, I think Obama is trying to raise as much money as possible so in the event that the race is still close at the end of the primary he can go to the convention as say, "look at all the money I have to give to the GE for the dems." There is no way the leaders of the democratic party and the SDs will not give him the nomination with this kind of money.

I love Hillary, but it's getting harder every day for her.

Clinton was leading Obama by 20 points at one time in PA. Like it or not the way to get to most people is via the television. Ads on TV are very, very expensive, especially ads during prime time. If you want to win you have to get your message and your face in front of the people. He's closing the gap in PA and it's partly due to TV advertising. Just compare it to companies that pay millions of dollars to get a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl. They understand the rewards.

Why dont you just send it to the local networks in PA thats where its going to go. All this money spent we could have rebuilt New Orleans by now. out spending someone 5-1 on ads is not a democracy. So the 2 million people displaced by this sub prime mess dont have a voice because they cant afford to contribute to a candidate.

Hillary Clinton has universal name recognition and the support of the state party. The only way to combat that is through money.
