The Beatles he loved couldn't be there to say goodbye.

It was left to the women to pay the band's final respects to Neil Aspinall, the man who ran the group's business empire for 40 years and was known as the "fifth Beatle".

He died two weeks ago at 66 after a battle with lung cancer.

John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, 75, and Sir Paul McCartney's daughter, the fashion designer Stella McCartney, 36, were among 250 mourners at yesterday's funeral at St Mary the Virgin near Mr Aspinall's home in Twickenham, South-West London.

The pair were seen warmly embracing along with Beatles producer Sir George Martin, 82, outside the funeral at the Church of St Mary the Virgin near Aspinall's home in Twickenham, south west London.

Ringo Starr's wife Barbara Bach, 60, and original Beatles member Pete Best, 66, also attended, as did The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend who arrived with a guitar under his hand to perform at the ceremony.

Here's an audio clip of creepy pedophile fundamentalist Warren Jeffs talking about the wicked Beatles!

George Martin... To me, the only legitimate claimant. And he never (to my knowledge) "claimed" the title. He may have acknowledged that others referred to him as such, but he was generally very humble about his contribution.

All those orchestrations and arrangements and albums that set the band apart were his productions. He's more a Beatle than Ringo.

Why didn't Paul and Ringo show up? I don't care about the press and what a circus it would have been. These people have ways around it. If Yoko at a surprising 75 come fly over then surely the boys could have come to pay their respects. It just looks bad on their part. After all, Paul"s kid even went.

I also realize that Paul is going through a major pain in the ass w/ his divorce but it looks bad justhesame.

Larry King is the Keith Richards of broadcasting. He looks cadaverous without having had the benefit of dying first.

Ringo and Paul stayed away out of respect for Neil's family, the zoo would have been huge had gthey been there. Rest in peace Neil.

They probably stayed away knowing that former drummer Pete Best would be there and the cameras would be clicking furiously to get a shot of them all. I don't believe they've crossed paths since the fall of 1962 when they sacked Pete.

The term "Fifth Beatle" has become a cliche and a joke!
Wikipedia now has an entry called "The Fifth Beatle," explaining how countless people who knew or worked with the Beatles each stole that title for themselves.
Here are some other designated "Fifth Beatles".......
Billy Preston
Derek Taylor
Neil Aspinall
George Martin
Tony Sheridan
Eric Clapton
Murray the K
Casey Kasem

of that list, only Billy Preston was accorded the distinction of being one of a select group of musicians who recorded and performed with the Beatles when John, Paul, George, and Ringo comprised the Fab Four. all of the others were either a 4th Beatle replaced at some point by one of the Fab Four (Stu Sutcliffe, Tony Sheridan, Pete Best), just helping out on a song or two (Alan White, Eric Clapton), producing (Sir George Martin), or employed in a non-musical, non-performance role (Neil Aspinall, Geoff Emerick, Derek Taylor). some were just hangers-on (Casey Kasem. sheesh...).

Billy Preston was asked to 'join' the Beatles by John Lennon but Paul quashed the idea by reminding the band that they were breaking up. Billy recorded and performed with George and Ringo in several post-Beatles situations and earned the title 'the 5th Beatle' when the song 'Get Back' debuted at #1 on the UK charts--a song featuring Billy's Fender Rhodes solo prominently.

how anyone can put Derek Taylor up against Billy Preston as a Beatle is beyond me. and Casey Kasem? right.

Your a little off with your facts regarding the original Beatles.

The bands original line up was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best and Stu Sutcliff (George was actually the last to Join this original line-up).

Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr but that doesn't alter the fact that Pete was a Beatle and toured with them through the lean crazy times in Hamburg (3-4 hour sets with 3-4 sets per night, popping lots of uppers and hookers).

Stu Stutcliffe was never replaced. He left the band because of an illness (due to a severe kick in the head and beating he and John recieved from a group of thugs, It is surmised that his death was a direct result of that injury), and at that time he had fallen in love with Astrid Kirchherr.
Stu was also the one who came up with the name "The Beatles" taken from the Marlon Brando/James Corburn film "The Wild One" and he is the first to don "The Beatle Haircut"

Tony Sheridan was never a Beatle. The Bealtes were the back-up band for Sherridan on one album. The album produced a semi-hit for Sherridan called, "My Bonnie", which was heard by Brian Epstien, who liked the sound of the back-up band better than the lead, found the Fab Five playing at The Cavern and you all know the rest.

This makes it sound like Ringo's dead.

A good good friend of the Fabs, thanks again, Neil.

...couldn't be worse than Larry King continually referring to Yoko and George's wife, Olivia, as "the widows" when he interviewed Paul, Ringo et al. on "Larry King Live" at the premiere of Cirque de Soleil's "Love".
