CNBC:

Investment bank bailouts, home foreclosures and job losses have spread economic gloom through America but in New York, at least, there's one industry still weathering the storm -- high-end weddings.

Cake makers, florists, wedding planners and dress-makers at a wedding show this month said brides were still determined to enjoy their big day with almost no expense spared.

While some couples were cutting back on non-essentials, for example having only two bridesmaids instead of four, most vendors at the New York magazine Weddings Showcase in Manhattan said they were yet to see a serious dip in business.

Now that's the way to start your new married life, going at least $30,000 into debt (or have your parents dip into their retirement). Just think, 50% of these brides will be divorced in no time...$30,000 down the tubes.

The consumptican American bride ... how special.

She has been spoon-fed suburbanism, consumption, avarice, and entitlement. She has fit the bell curve neatly: lost her virginity at 17, drunk at 16, joined the proper sorority, kept her eyes on the prize: the middling, mediocre frat king who'll shoot his wad on a chunk of glass-like stone so he can kneel in front of her teary suburban face and propose.

I'm so touched.

They'll end up in Fox Acres or Eastlake or Pleasant View or some such development, in debt up to their eyeballs, but hanging in there in their daily maniacal efforts to stay on the great gray American highway, keeping up with the Joneses, absolutely asleep and spiritually crippled (if not dead), unaware and indifferent how their actions are destroying the planet.

When the wedding industry crashes, then I'll know thing are starting to get better.

Shawn, not only ridiculous, but a despicable farce and waste of money. Who do these women think they are anyway? Some fairy tale princess or something? Get a grip on reality! If you must marry, simply elope, have a backyard wedding, visit the justice of the peace. Holy crap what is wrong with people?

Wow, it cost a lot to get rid of a Daughter these days.

When did a daughters marriage start requiring a 2nd mortage?
