WASHINGTON — The federal tax bill for President Bush and his wife: $221,635. That's how much the Bushes owed on their adjusted gross income of $923,807 for the year 2007, according to a joint return released Friday. The Bushes have paid $203,894 so far, which means they'll need to break out the checkbook _ they owe the government $17,741.

Their income total includes a $150,000 advance received by Laura Bush for the children's book she co-authored with her daughter, Jenna.

Last year, the president and Mrs. Bush paid $186,378 in federal taxes on their income of $765,801.

Bush's salary as president is about $400,000.

Almost 29 percent of the Bushes' income comes from interest on investments. The largest share of that interest was paid out from one place, The Lone Star Trust, according to the return released by the White House.

The White House also reported that Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, had an adjusted gross income of $3.04 million in 2007.

The Cheneys owed $602,651 in federal taxes on that income. They have paid $466,165 through withholdings and estimated tax payments, and will pay the remaining $136,486 upon filing their tax return.

The Cheneys' income includes the vice president's salary and a pension he gets as a former director of Union Pacific Corp. It also includes Lynne Cheney's book royalty income, a salary from her work at the American Enterprise Institute and a pension she gets as a former director of Reader's Digest.

The vice president's salary is about $212,000.

Mrs. Bush donated all net proceeds from her book advance to Teach for America and The New Teacher Project, according to the White House.

The Bushes contributed $165,660 to churches and charitable organizations, including the volunteer fire department in Crawford, Texas, where they own a ranch. The Cheneys donated $166,547 to charity in 2007, the White House said.

They better be careful or they'll catch up with the Clintons.

At least they appear to put their money where there mouth is. Over the past years whenever someone bothers to look at charitable donations as a percentage of income among competing politicians, Dems always seem to lag far behind.

Morondude -you may want to look into those "charitable" contributions. Last year the Cheney's put all their "charitable" contributions into their very own charities!!!

The Bushes did the EXACT same -e.g. Barbara Bush (who shouldn't be allowed to walk this planet) gave all her "charitable" contributions to her son Neil Bush (remember, Neil is the criminal behind the Saving & Loans scandals in the 80s)

Cheney donated $166,547 of an AGI of $3.04 Million, a whopping 5%! Which Democrats donated less? Personally, I contribute a far greater percentage of my AGI to charity and I don't have money to burn like the Cheney's do.

Bush contibuted money to the fire department where he owns a ranch and you consider this totally benevolent? It couldn't be that his house is in a fire prone location and he wants to make sure it is protected in such an event, could it?

Luckily, there is no place to enter "Income from Bribes and Kickbacks" on your tax forms.

Heh- that's a good one. But there wouldn't be enough itemized lines for BushCo's bribes and kickbacks!

Actually there is. It's line 21 of form 1040 labeled "Other Income. List type and amount".

Does anyone believe that their REAL earnings are on paper? C'mon, they're not that stupid ... but I do realize that they think the rest of us are.

To quote Darth Cheney........."SO".

And we are surprised HOW by these two War Criminals ?

My guess is that we don't know the half of it !

The earnings do not reflect Cheney's astronomical growth in net worth on account of Halliburtion options. Increases in asset values are not earnings, and Cheney's options are the real story behind his war profiteering.

Cheney's overall effective tax rate appears to be about 20 percent.......not bad for a millionaire.
Check your rate (not marginal rate) by dividing your tax paid by your total income. Many middle class Americans will pay 20 percent, or more. Then add the FICA bite. Ain't Repubbies GREAT!!

once again I, a carpenter managing a small residential construction business in n.w. Fl, paid a much higher percentage of my income in federal taxes than the uber wealthy Pres and VP. I do not resent my tax contributions but I do resent the way my money is spent. If these people would contribute a fair amount we would not face the financial problems we do. Patriots my ass.

Well, they are two of the most successful serial killers in recorded history, along with Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and the Nazis, so I suppose that money was hard-earned. Just think- we've actually paid them money to kill and torture people.

Gee wonder how much oil revenue stocks they have, I'm sure they made a bundle off of them, all the while our economy and the American worker's were being laid off, or no raises, and paying higher prices, not to mention the crumbs they pay the military men and women who have had to make such personal sacrafices in the name of their WAR. Crooks, and Liars, and no soles.

Some might say you spelled souls wrong, but I argue that soles applies, as neither man has ever walked a step, much less a mile, in the footsteps of our brave soldiers or struggling working class Americans of all races or religions.

Too bad they didn't include the earnings from the off-shore accounts that bush and cheney have maintained since taking office. Since they have been siphoning off our tax payer money to their cronies who give them kickbacks . You can bet the kickbacks from the defense contractors and big pharmaceuticals (which explains the no negotiation for drugs in Medicare) will assist them in avoiding the legal ramifications of their illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq.

According to the IRS Form ???? kick backs are illegal. ( I don't have time top check which booklet /chapter to cite!) ( It didn't relate much to me, so I didn't park it in my brain storage!)

Next paragraph tells you how to write them in!
