I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Axelrod

Surrogates to Sen. Barack Obama said on Saturday that while the Senator regrets the phrasing of his remarks, in which he said Pennsylvanians were bitter and "clinged" to guns, religion and anti-immigration sentiment because of economic frustrations, he would ultimately not apologize for them.

"He regrets the wording of the remarks and he was sorry for the offense that anybody took from them," said Obama's senior strategist, David Axelrod, "but I think the most important thing is that the essence of what he said is something he feels very strongly about. There is a real anger among many in the communities... they are tired of politicians who come around at election time and express their solicitude as part of a tactic and don't follow through on it."

The defense of Obama, who is under withering attacks that his comments - first reported by Huffington Post's Off The Bus - were elitist, out of touch and condescending, did not end there. Other surrogates to the Senator insisted that Obama's political opponents should be the ones offering regret for politicizing the issue.

"The only apologies that would be appropriate would be from the Sens. [Hillary] Clinton and [John] McCain's campaigns who are trying to make an issue out of this," said John Futterman, mayor of Bradick, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately for Futterman, such apologies seem all but certain not to happen. Indeed, an hour before the Obama campaign convened its conference call, the Clinton camp held one of its own. In it, surrogates to the New York Democrat took repeated jabs at the "bitterness" remark, saying, on several occasions, that it made Obama out-of-touch and unelectable in small-town America.

"I found them to be condescending and disappointing," said Clinton's national campaign co-chair and Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack. "They reflected in my view a flawed reading of people who live in small towns in Pennsylvania and other states... I found his remarks undercut his message of hope... What they want is not a pat on the head from a presidential candidate; what they want is a pat on the back."

In addition to the call, the Clinton campaign peppered reporters throughout Saturday with video clips and written statements of surrogates (in Indiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania - three upcoming primary states) criticizing Obama's remarks. In a separate interview with Talking Points Memo, Geoffrey Garin, Clinton's new chief strategist, said the comments could be "damaging" to Obama in a general election and would serve as fodder for Sen. Clinton to woo the support of superdelegates.

Even Obama and his supporters acknowledged that his words didn't come off right.

"I don't think I would have used the same words that he used. I don't think that people are bitter, I do think people are angry," said Rick Gray, mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "I think people are upset about the economic conditions of this county... They see executives getting large bonuses and they see themselves losing their pension and their health care. And there is a level of anger that is just seething there."

Acknowledging a phrasing error seems to be one component of Obama's hopes to stem the blowback from his remarks. In addition, his campaign, starting on Friday evening, has sought to call out Sen. Clinton as the one more out of touch with small town America: pointing both to revelations that she and her husband have made more than $100 million since leaving the White House, and the fact that her campaign (and not Obama's) accepts donations from registered Washington lobbyists.

On Saturday, Clinton's surrogates were asked whether the later issue concerned them in the same way manner that they were about Obama's remarks. The answer, among all six conference call attendees was a resounding: "No."

Clinton, they retorted, had stronger roots and a greater understanding of small town issues -- lobbyist money or individual income aside.

"I think it is difficult for a democratic candidates to be succeed in a general election if he misunderstands people who live in small towns," said Vilsack. "We are going to have to have someone on the top of my ticket who understands [god and guns]."

I think she has over thrown her hail mary pass here Bill's speech to give Colmbians our jobs made him more that even Bush made last year (on the books)....As far as McCain maybe he should start a program handing out sugar momma wives and then we can all be as a man of the people like him.

Hillary is on CNN right now, and she said she'll let Obama speak for himself about his PA statements. This after days of her calling him 'elitist' and 'divisive', calling every news outlet and ensuring the papers carried her BS, and giving out "I'm not bitter" buttons on the campaign trail.

I have never seen anyone this hypocritical and disingenuous in the Democratic party in all my life.

It's true! What a funny thing to say.
Hillary is the Wicked Witch of the West. Ol' WWW Clinton!
I am sorry, I have tried to like her and even understand, but I can't---on both counts!

Indie17..you must not have been around the Democratic Party for long if this is the first time you've witnessed 'hypocritical and disingenuous' in politics...I think Hillary should campaign on Monday in an Annie Oakley outfit...I love the 'I'm not bitter' buttons...but I'd like to see 'I'm not a racist' buttons too...that the end of that line that seems to be getting left out of the 'discussion'...the part that rural people who are 'bitter' not only 'cling to god and religion' but they misguidedly take their frustrations out on 'people not like them or immigrants'.

But his mock of Hillary's ad was ok? everything BO does is ok - why?

He condescends. Obamaniacs see this as an unfair criticism but he's another John Kerry with a more winning smile. He is elitist and he'll lose the election because of it.

You are shocked by politics... what about Barack's continual manipulation of white guilt? Decades after we'd all done that to death. Were you aware of the manipulation of race in his response to the valid shock over Rev Wright's hate speech?

Check Obama's voting record ... it's nearly identical to Clinton's. Read about BO and NAFTA - the Canada story.

Just because Obama hasn't the character to do his own dirty work doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Google - anti-Hillary and read the lunatics who are attacking Hillary in Obama's name.

I have yet to hear from anyone who thinks Obama comments were elitist or worse, untrue. To the contraryMy contacts range in age from 32 to 86, from NY to California. I recommend you read a chilling portrait of a Hillary Clinton presidency, by Carl Bernstein who also happens to have written a biography of HRC.

This should be a must read for everyone even contemplating to vote for the Billary team.

There is only one circumstance under which I could vote for that lying monster: if she were my party's nominee.

Please, let the Clintons retire, and let the party move foreward.

But how can we vote in a lying monster? We would knowingly be contributing to all the ills she might bring upon the country. Isn't that a kind of betrayal of our fellow man? How can we criticize those who voted for Bush and Cheney, and then we go and vote for Hillary---who lies and lies and lies. How often will she lie to the people if and when she is president? And about what? I don't know, I don't see how I can vote for her.

And... one salient observation that Bernstein makes in that book is that Clinton has 'thick ankles'.... where are the grownups? This is your proof.
My in-laws are incensed at the 'bitter' AND the 'cling' remarks - could this guy be as out of touch as the famous mother of the pres on the 'advantages' of the stadium?
He knows nothing of life outside his ken. Affirmative action (by his admission) got him where he is today.... so to hell with those he's left behind..
The man is simply a con man playing continually on white guilt and he's going to lose the election for the Democrats.
Insanely, the 'Swift Boats' are manned by crazed Democrats. I'm 61 and this is the sickest campaign I'm lived through - I feel like the kid in the 'Emperor's New Clothes'.... the king is truly naked and no one is pointing that out.

Obama should not apologize for his remarks. I'm glad he is standing his ground. There was nothing elitist about his remarks. What he said is both true and accurate. Clinton is trying to generate a fake controversy to take attention away from her own lies about Bosnia, SCHIP, NAFTA and peace in Ireland.

Twenty-one elected officials and community leaders from small towns and rural areas throughout Pennsylvania today released an open letter asking fellow Pennsylvanians to set aside Senators Clinton and McCain’s recent attempts at political point-scoring and consider who will fight for them as President.

Also - the Pennsylvania Morning Call formally endorsed Barack Obama in today's Sunday edition, citing "his message of hope and change ... [that] conveys a vision of the nation's future that is in tune with the tenor and consensus of most Americans."

And... another Sunday endorsement, this time from the Scranton (Hillary's roots), Pennsylvania Times-Tribune: In a nomination campaign that has defied convention, Mr. Obama has energized an entire generation of voters that, for the most part, otherwise had checked out of political participation. That, at least, portends a new approach to governance that can help to dissipate the political miasma that has engulfed Washington... For Pennsylvania Democrats, the best answer in the April 22 primary is Barack Obama.

I'd say Hillary and McCain could be facing a backlash from their attacks on Barack speaking the truth.

what is your proof that BO will fight for anybody? Read his voting record instead of spouting invectives.

You know it's getting weird when a former First Lady with $109 million in the bank, and degrees from Yale and Wellesley ( no college loans necessary from what I have seen) — who served for six years on the Board of Directors of Wal-Mart (that great friend of working people) — is calling Sen Obama an elitist.

the 'elitism' term is what gets me. Billary earned $109M. McCain has 7 homes. the Obama's just paid off their student loans. Whats up is down & whats down is up.

Obama has hit a raw nerve with his populist comments, not with PA voters but with the corporate candidates, Hillary and McCain. When Obama asked PA voters to vote first for their economic interests, the corporate world sucked air. Flags were raised, warnings were sounded, the usual suspects turned up on the airways. How dare middle class voters put themselves first. As Greider, Phillips and Frank have written the middle class has voted against it's own economic interest for the last 25 years. This is the basis of corporate rule. How dare Obama try to change the equation.

If there are people in small towns who do not feel like they have been ignored when it comes to jobs and their children's futures, I do not know who they are.
Perhaps he was trying to make these folks who think they "have it all" understand a little bit about the way people who struggle financially think.
He never said that the people in small towns are ignorant. He never said they are not worthy of being heard.
In fact, he said just the opposite.
People in small towns who do not have lots of money are just like people who live in big cities and have loads of money. We all need something to believe in, something to make us feel protected and some hope that the future does hold a promise of better things to come.

And... BO's intellectualizing rings through again. Just like you folks can't turn Rev Wright's speeches are pathetic cries for justice, you can't change BO's assessment of 'bitter' people who then 'cling' to religion and guns into a sympathetic analysis.
Wake up and smell the hypocrisy ... you are in a trance and can't see the man for what he truly is - a cynical con man who's got white American on a leash.

HOW anyone could have found OBAMA's words and analysis DEMEANING and CONDESCENDING is beyond the pail.......................He was actually understanding and caring.
Of course he would not mean bad towards the very GROUP whose VOTES he needs.
He is not stupid .
Had he not said .............and immigration etc.............after the guns and religion...........it could have been held against him.............but it is obvious that he was thinking aloud and certainly had no bad intentions.

It's because most people only hear what they want to hear. The majority of the people who are complaining about what Obama said are either Clinton or McCain supporters who for some reason feel the need to prove to themselves that Obama is evil (even though he is not).

They think just because the canidates they back are slimy then Obama must be too. It simply boils down to people being narrow minded!

Please provide a link to the story that you read in the Chicago Sun Times, because the only reference to Thomas Jefferson in the one that I read is: "Wright made no mention of terrorism, he did revisit the topic of America’s mistreatment of blacks, saying...Thomas Jefferson wrote, “ ‘God would punish America for the sin of slavery.’ I guess that makes Thomas Jefferson unpatriotic,”

This isn't the 90s, 2000 or 2004, where those of you who want to mislead Amercia can make unfounded comments and the electorate will just buy them because, "gosh, if you said it happended that way then it must be true." In case you did not know, we can all access the same alleged sources that you people misquote and just plain lie about. Welcome to 2008. Get a grip!

Huffington Post broke this story ... Now they're trying to bury it, with big Splashy anti-Hillary headlines.

Barrack will try to re-explain the "clinging to guns and religion" at the debate. But the damage is done.

Here's the must-see video of Obama's remarks to the San Francisco crowd. Listen to the laughter. Well-off Democrats chortling with Barrack over those stupid bitter working class Democrats who don't have enough sense to support Obama. Watch the video that will sink his campaign:

Then say vote for someone who out right lies to me and thinks I'm so stupid that I can't tell the diference between the words that she says and the images on my television.
