I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Axelrod

Surrogates to Sen. Barack Obama said on Saturday that while the Senator regrets the phrasing of his remarks, in which he said Pennsylvanians were bitter and "clinged" to guns, religion and anti-immigration sentiment because of economic frustrations, he would ultimately not apologize for them.

"He regrets the wording of the remarks and he was sorry for the offense that anybody took from them," said Obama's senior strategist, David Axelrod, "but I think the most important thing is that the essence of what he said is something he feels very strongly about. There is a real anger among many in the communities... they are tired of politicians who come around at election time and express their solicitude as part of a tactic and don't follow through on it."

The defense of Obama, who is under withering attacks that his comments - first reported by Huffington Post's Off The Bus - were elitist, out of touch and condescending, did not end there. Other surrogates to the Senator insisted that Obama's political opponents should be the ones offering regret for politicizing the issue.

"The only apologies that would be appropriate would be from the Sens. [Hillary] Clinton and [John] McCain's campaigns who are trying to make an issue out of this," said John Futterman, mayor of Bradick, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately for Futterman, such apologies seem all but certain not to happen. Indeed, an hour before the Obama campaign convened its conference call, the Clinton camp held one of its own. In it, surrogates to the New York Democrat took repeated jabs at the "bitterness" remark, saying, on several occasions, that it made Obama out-of-touch and unelectable in small-town America.

"I found them to be condescending and disappointing," said Clinton's national campaign co-chair and Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack. "They reflected in my view a flawed reading of people who live in small towns in Pennsylvania and other states... I found his remarks undercut his message of hope... What they want is not a pat on the head from a presidential candidate; what they want is a pat on the back."

In addition to the call, the Clinton campaign peppered reporters throughout Saturday with video clips and written statements of surrogates (in Indiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania - three upcoming primary states) criticizing Obama's remarks. In a separate interview with Talking Points Memo, Geoffrey Garin, Clinton's new chief strategist, said the comments could be "damaging" to Obama in a general election and would serve as fodder for Sen. Clinton to woo the support of superdelegates.

Even Obama and his supporters acknowledged that his words didn't come off right.

"I don't think I would have used the same words that he used. I don't think that people are bitter, I do think people are angry," said Rick Gray, mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "I think people are upset about the economic conditions of this county... They see executives getting large bonuses and they see themselves losing their pension and their health care. And there is a level of anger that is just seething there."

Acknowledging a phrasing error seems to be one component of Obama's hopes to stem the blowback from his remarks. In addition, his campaign, starting on Friday evening, has sought to call out Sen. Clinton as the one more out of touch with small town America: pointing both to revelations that she and her husband have made more than $100 million since leaving the White House, and the fact that her campaign (and not Obama's) accepts donations from registered Washington lobbyists.

On Saturday, Clinton's surrogates were asked whether the later issue concerned them in the same way manner that they were about Obama's remarks. The answer, among all six conference call attendees was a resounding: "No."

Clinton, they retorted, had stronger roots and a greater understanding of small town issues -- lobbyist money or individual income aside.

"I think it is difficult for a democratic candidates to be succeed in a general election if he misunderstands people who live in small towns," said Vilsack. "We are going to have to have someone on the top of my ticket who understands [god and guns]."

Some voter recations, quote:

In local small towns like Oakdale, many people say they were just hearing about Obama's comments and the reaction was mixed.

"It's a right to own a gun. You have every right in the world to own a gun," said Oakdale resident Mike Smith. "He's got no right to take that away from anybody."

Local teacher, Joe Welch, of South Fayette Township, says he is an undecided Democratic voter, but adds that Obama's remarks may sway him now to vote for Senator Hillary Clinton.

"I don't want to make an instant reaction here, but this is something I'll take into consideration," said Welch. "Religion and personal freedoms, that's something that should be taken into consideration."

Meanwhile, the gun lobby had their own reaction to the remarks.

"Outrage… people are very concerned that this man is distant, doesn't understand his responsibilities, said Kim Stolfer, of the Allegheny County Sportmen's League. "He doesn't understand what the people need."

As a working man, when I heard the comments he made, I agreed. Most "working" people I know said the same thing. His words sounded perfectly normal to us.

HOW ABOUT THIS FOR DEMEANING PENNSYLVANIA RURAL VOTERS:

"Pittsburgh on one end, Philadelphia on the other end, and 'Alabama' in between..."

Make no mistake about what this comment is implying. That the stereotype of a "hick" Alabama, with its racist and misogynist roots, also applies to voters in rural Pennsylvania.

Now, who said this about Pennsylvania? Barack Obama? Michelle Obama? An Obama Surrogate? No. James Carville of "Judas" fame. That's right - one of Hillary Clinton's most trusted friends and surrogates made that statement and has popularized it now in our MSM. Where was Hillary's outrage? Where was Hillary's "depth of understanding" about the Pennsylvania voters? With this row, Hillary Clinton and her campaign has shown her true colors - she has no idea what rural voters feel and want, but she will do anything, including tarring and smearing the likely nominee of her party, in order to get their vote - just like every other politician that has taken advantage of these people.

Pennsylvanians - don't be fooled by the Clinton Machine. They don't give a jack about you. They'll do anything to destroy the truth of your plight.

Give. me. a. break!

The only ones that have NO understanding of small town America are those goddamn slick politicians who constantly pay lip service to honesty, integrity, and values, but never live up to them! Those politicians who constantly promise economic progress yet fail to deliver year. after year. after year.

What have YOU done lately, Mr. Vilsack, to revitalize Pennsylvania's small towns? I didn't think so.

There is much being made of Sen. Obama's comments about small town America. when I
saw the comments, I found it hard to see the difference between

Howard Beale: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
Sen Obama: (paraphased) "I'M AS BITTER AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!'

When I am as mad as hell, I often resort to the bible for guidance.

Lou Dobbs is "MAD/BITTER AS HELL" and he is calling for a revolt because
1- The borders are not being protected
2- The mortgage meltdown
3- Jobs being outsourced to other countries
4- The war in Iraq
5- The government is at war with the middle class and small town America
6- Rising gas prices

I don't see much difference in what Sen. Obama said and what Lou Dobbs says
everyday!

Hazleton, Penn.: "MAD/BITTER AS HELL"
Hazleton, Penn., has seen a large influx of Latino immigrants in recent years.
Hazleton's mayor is leading a campaign to drive out undocumented residents. He
says their presence is straining city services and has increased crime.

Pennsylvania towns: "MAD/BITTER AS HELL"
USA (By Miriam Jordan, The Wall Street Journal) July 16, 2006
Last month, several Pennsylvania legislators introduced a package of bills that
would, among other things, prohibit public spending on services or benefits for
migrants. Several Pennsylvania towns are considering local sanctions against
landlords that rent to or businesses that employ such migrants.

Exactly. And others in rural PA agree with you. Read their letter below regarding Obama's comments:

Dear Fellow Pennsylvanian,

We live in small towns and rural areas throughout Pennsylvania and we support Barack Obama for President.

A few days ago, Sen. Obama made some comments that his opponents are now using to make him appear as if he is something he is not. Instead of speaking to us honestly about how they intend to solve the problems we are facing, they are playing the same old Washington games that accomplish nothing.

What Sen. Obama said is that over the last 25-30 years, working class people in places like Pennsylvania have been falling behind, and that politicians in Washington haven"t been looking out for them. He also said that, as a result, many people have become frustrated, angry and even bitter about all the broken promises.

The politicians who are now saying that we shouldn"t be frustrated are the ones who are out of touch.

People in the towns and communities we live in have seen their jobs shipped overseas. We"ve seen our pensions disappear. We"ve seen our health care costs skyrocket. We"ve seen everything from the cost of gasoline to a gallon of milk go through the roof.

As our families have struggled to make ends meet and our communities fought to stay intact, how has Washington responded?

The insult is: for centuries, the church has been a refuge for black folks to go and get some healing, spiritual and otherwise.

Fast forward to today and the black church has become a place to make light and jokes -- not appreciated, at all. If you think black folks think it is a funny thing for you to degrade Rev. Wright and to take out of context his sermons, which consist of sermons for over 25 years, you are wrong and merely silly. Once you have done deeds that Rev. WRight has done with his community, than you can stand in judgment. You haven't walked in his shoes, therefore, you are merely a critic -- judge not lest, you be judged.

Bitter – according to Webster’s -- expressive of severe pain, grief, or regret. Sounds like bitter might be an ordinary feeling towards politicians and companies that overseen the hollowing out of our country and lost a job that wasn’t ever coming back.

Cling – according to Webster’s – to have a strong emotional attachment. Sounds like clinging to religion might be a reaction – relying on one’s faith -- might be something a religious person might do if they lost a job that wasn’t coming back. Sounds like going hunting (with a gun) might be something a hunter might do to help forget for a moment about losing a job that wasn’t coming back.

It doesn’t sound condescending, its sounds like someone that understands what iist like to lose a job that isn’t coming back. Could have Obama chosen other words that might have been less subject to misinterpretation and abuse by his opponents. Probably. But he was essentially accurate.

Am I an elitist out of touch with the common person? I was born in one of those small towns the son of a UAW worker. Someone that knows about religion, guns and losing jobs that aren’t coming back.

I hope Hillary keeps up harping on this – it just shows how out of touch she is.

Who was it when asked why he robbed banks, responded that that was were the money was?

Does it come as a huge surprise to you that a politician goes to meetings of the well to do who hold similar political philosophies and shakes them down for money?

Name one successful politician who does not do this.

As a Pennsylvanian I'm really happy the Morning Call is endorsing Mr. Barack Obama at a time when the media is trying to twist every word he says into something he did not mean. As our source of news here in the Lehigh Valley and with the primary coming up it is important to report the news as it happened and not assume further than what is known, nor play the dangerous game of implication as most of the media is presently doing in politics, especially TV Ent. News.

With Mr. Obama our kids now have valid starting point to begin their journey into the future instead of the streets as an educational source, or a path to walk with dead end streets. An Avenue of Prosperity for every citizen in a real democracy is what was always possible but denied to the people until now.

Would any mother or father tell their child not to hope? Then how can the citizens be told hope is false when Obama says it and not Clinton or anyone else? How wonderful that finally someone like Mr. Obama has the audacity to do what could always be done but was not. Education is the key to a better society and a better America and we always had the tax dollars for it. But what does the media do? Spend time spinning words like "Bitter, Mistake, etc." hoping some people will fixate on that then the reality of what is happening and why.

Obama's comments may sound condescending, as Fox News has pointed out 2,359 times this weekend. Yet, Hillary Clinton repeatedly gives speeches about using "just words." How Obama may talk the talk, but action is the measure of success in politics. Well, hitting on this idea, what I think is condescending is not when people like Obama try to put a name on how small-town America feels. It's when people like W. Bush and Karl Rove put a name on how small-town America feels and proceed to use this name to pass a completely different agenda. For instance, before the 2004 election, the Bush campaign saw an opening in a constitutional amendment defining marriage. They used this issue to open a window to run rampant with their policies of stepping on the lower and middle classes, trashing the environment, and corporate kickbacks. They have done this, and will do this again, with guns, god, and government, as well as "gays." Indeed, action is truly the measure of success.

It is very true indeed. Is the USA a "sensitive" society? Where are we headed? The media tries to play into the voters weaknesses, and now they managed to recruit the word "Bitter" along with "Mistake" and all the other non-offensive words to the category of Offensive Words" that can no longer be used by selected democrats while our very own Vice President can say "SO" to the citizens of the United States in a totally different ballpark and get away with it.

Prior to 9/11 my brother worked for a firm for 20 years making over 100,000 a year in NYC. He move to Cumming, GA and transferred to an office in Atlanta 3 years prior to 9/11. Soon after 9/11 he was one of the first to get the pink slip. My brother and his family were never religious before this incident but afterwards he and his family cling to religion which was the only thing that kept them away from sinking into deep bitterness and dangerous stress. Today they have survived and so far kept their home. Was choosing religion wrong? Of course not, but when it's done by force instead of choice one wonders how politics assumes faith alone can forcefully take care of its people when mismanagement is to blame.

Yet today he DID apologize.

So I guess that's a FLIP FLOP?

Anyway -- it's a miracle Huffpo ran Mayhill's piece. Maybe the editors were on a latte break?
