Axelrod

Surrogates to Sen. Barack Obama said on Saturday that while the Senator regrets the phrasing of his remarks, in which he said Pennsylvanians were bitter and "clinged" to guns, religion and anti-immigration sentiment because of economic frustrations, he would ultimately not apologize for them.

"He regrets the wording of the remarks and he was sorry for the offense that anybody took from them," said Obama's senior strategist, David Axelrod, "but I think the most important thing is that the essence of what he said is something he feels very strongly about. There is a real anger among many in the communities... they are tired of politicians who come around at election time and express their solicitude as part of a tactic and don't follow through on it."

The defense of Obama, who is under withering attacks that his comments - first reported by Huffington Post's Off The Bus - were elitist, out of touch and condescending, did not end there. Other surrogates to the Senator insisted that Obama's political opponents should be the ones offering regret for politicizing the issue.

"The only apologies that would be appropriate would be from the Sens. [Hillary] Clinton and [John] McCain's campaigns who are trying to make an issue out of this," said John Futterman, mayor of Bradick, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately for Futterman, such apologies seem all but certain not to happen. Indeed, an hour before the Obama campaign convened its conference call, the Clinton camp held one of its own. In it, surrogates to the New York Democrat took repeated jabs at the "bitterness" remark, saying, on several occasions, that it made Obama out-of-touch and unelectable in small-town America.

"I found them to be condescending and disappointing," said Clinton's national campaign co-chair and Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack. "They reflected in my view a flawed reading of people who live in small towns in Pennsylvania and other states... I found his remarks undercut his message of hope... What they want is not a pat on the head from a presidential candidate; what they want is a pat on the back."

In addition to the call, the Clinton campaign peppered reporters throughout Saturday with video clips and written statements of surrogates (in Indiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania - three upcoming primary states) criticizing Obama's remarks. In a separate interview with Talking Points Memo, Geoffrey Garin, Clinton's new chief strategist, said the comments could be "damaging" to Obama in a general election and would serve as fodder for Sen. Clinton to woo the support of superdelegates.

Even Obama and his supporters acknowledged that his words didn't come off right.

"I don't think I would have used the same words that he used. I don't think that people are bitter, I do think people are angry," said Rick Gray, mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "I think people are upset about the economic conditions of this county... They see executives getting large bonuses and they see themselves losing their pension and their health care. And there is a level of anger that is just seething there."

Acknowledging a phrasing error seems to be one component of Obama's hopes to stem the blowback from his remarks. In addition, his campaign, starting on Friday evening, has sought to call out Sen. Clinton as the one more out of touch with small town America: pointing both to revelations that she and her husband have made more than $100 million since leaving the White House, and the fact that her campaign (and not Obama's) accepts donations from registered Washington lobbyists.

On Saturday, Clinton's surrogates were asked whether the later issue concerned them in the same way manner that they were about Obama's remarks. The answer, among all six conference call attendees was a resounding: "No."

Clinton, they retorted, had stronger roots and a greater understanding of small town issues -- lobbyist money or individual income aside.

"I think it is difficult for a democratic candidates to be succeed in a general election if he misunderstands people who live in small towns," said Vilsack. "We are going to have to have someone on the top of my ticket who understands [god and guns]."

Wait, Vilsack thinks someone who has a message of hope shouldn't talk about the bitterness people feel now at being betrayed by politicians who promise everything, and follow through with nothing?

Absolutely. And in the same way, a doctor should never mention anything about how deadly their patient's heroin use is when treating the patient, because that would spoil the doctor's "message of hope".

Obama has again illustrated that he understands what is going on. The problem is that he has not learned that you can’t tell the truth. People want to live in denial. They want to be told that everything will be OK against all evidence to the contrary. They do not want to be told that, if they want things to be OK, they had better do something. They don’t want to do anything.

People feel better if they can rage about their rights whether they have them or not. You have the right to bear arms unless the government decides to declare martial law and take them from you. You have the right to a fair trial unless the government decides to declare you a terrorist, lock you up and not give you one. You have the right to privacy unless the government decides to spy on you. The Constitution is the law that guarantees your rights unless the government decides to ignore it.

So, cling to these rights and don’t let the elitists tell you that you don’t have them.

Don't worry I'm not gullible enough to believe that Fox will not turn back to it's old ways tomorrow.

For Obama to say that average Americans CLING to anything for any reason (let alone because of bitterness or frustration) is why he is not the leader for all Americans. We do not cling to god or guns. We do not cling!

We want an explanation of his words about us Americans.

The Democrats keep losing elections over being viewed as elitist and out of touch. Step up to the plate Obama. Why would you say we CLING to anything?

The fact Obama refuses to apologize for his arrogant, condescending comments shows just how cocky he truly is!!! Hillary Clinton (and Bill, too!) does know how the middle class people feel. She was born into a middle class family in just these small towns that Obama is putting down!! The Clintons didn't always have millions of dollars. They entered the White House with a modest amount of money and left the White House millions of dollars in debt!!! So don't say they don't know what it's like or they don't understand how these people feel!!

Even before these comments were made by Obama, I thought he was Arrogant and condescending just by conceited comments he's made about himself and sexist comments he's made about Hillary. He is a FRAUD, A LIAR AND HE WOULD BE A DISASTER AS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!!!!

VOTERS AND SUPERDELEGATES; PLEASE VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON!!!! SHE IS THE PERSON WE NEED TO LEAD OUR COUNTRY BACK ON THE RIGHT TRACK!!!

Let's start with The Clintons left the WHITEHOUSE in Debt due to their own legal troubles - they had to pay off their lawyers for all the Lying they have done.

Next - Clinton was born into a middle class family, yes - but what are you suggesting Obama was born into wealth? I think not

As far as the comments you have about him saying sexiest things about Sen. Clinton - did you make that up all by yourself or did you need help with that one?????? (and if I'm wrong please tell me 1 sexiest remark he mad about her)

and finally - He is the 1 Democratic canidate that hasn't LIE to us. The problem is people like you are so use to being lie to that you don't know when the truth hits you upside the head.

So if you want a President that lie and says and does anything to win (bosnia, nafta, columbian trade agreement, Ireland etc. etc.) then you go ahead and vote for Sen. Clinton

I on the other hand like it when people tell me the truth so I think I'll stick with OBAMA!

That Obama's comments about disenfranchised people in rural Pennsylvania gets traction is ridiculous and absurd. We place more attention on nonsense than on dire issues. And although it fans the flames, I chime in to counter the many voices that take issue with Obama's comments for the hope that reason puts out this fire with fire.

Firstly, let us all agree that Obama is an elitist as is Hillary, McCain and every politician. Why else would anyone go into politics if they did not think "their" ideas were not "better"? The question about politicians should not be if they are elitists but if they are opportunists. Obama is an elitist who wants the "common" people to do better while others are elitists who rape the common people for the benefit of their brethren elitists.

Secondly, this notion that Obama is "angry" with a "chip on his shoulder" is code for "I am a racist.” Personally, I am happy that Obama might be angry in the same way that I am grateful the founding fathers and Martin Luther King Jr. were angry. Without their anger, tyrants would rule indefinitely. So let's elect a leader who is angry at the right things (fill in your issue here). So let's knock the chip off all our politicians' shoulders and see what they fight for, if they fight for nepotism then we know where they stand but if they fight for equal rights then we know we got the right one.

If by "anger at the right things" you mean anger at "white people" -- a generalized, stereotyped group (upon whom BTW Obama must rely, as blacks are only 12% of the population -- I couldn't disagree with you more.
We don't need a President, pretending to be a uniter, who has such underlying hostility and racist views toward white people.

Obama is cleverly trying to divert attention from the prejudiced portion of his remarks, by framing the issue as whether people are bitter or not.
That isn't the issue.
Obama was asked the reason that white people living in rural areas in PA might not vote for him. He responded by pointing the finger at them, as a group, and by claiming that they, as a group, "cling to guns and [racism]" to assuage their feelings of "frustration."
That is a bigoted, prejudiced remark. The fact is that Obama's campaign DEPENDS upon white people, who, although angry about the state of our Union, are NOT racist or prejudiced.
He further revealed who he thinks the "typical white person" is. That revelation, along with all other signs of his true feelings, is troubling.
I have concluded that Obama is a racist. His supporters can rant and rave, like Wright, about "white people" and blame every objection to Obama's views on white bigotry, but the truth is that he is the one stereotyping whites, judging whites as a group and unfairly blaming white people for things that he himself advocates.

Yes it is----a Black Man as president IS not what these people who are getting financially crushed by the Repukes are comfortable with. They are teetering on financial disaster. No health care. etc-they withdraw to what they are most familiar with-and they ARE bitter about cheap immigrant labor, etc. Also, EVERY typical white woman I asked said they WOULD be scared if they came to a corner and four Black men were there, just hanging around. See the truth-it will set you free.!!! YOU LIARS ARE THE PROBLEM-like addicts who won't admit their problem!!!

1. Get a copy of Chris Rock's debunking the canard that only white people are "scared if they came to a corner and four Black men were there." See what Chris had to say about who he keeps on eye on when at the ATM.
2. Using the "typical white woman" is another one of those stereotype racial attacks that Obama is inspiring. It is getting more and more common for Obama supporters to openly attack "white people." THis is not suprising, given the Wright openly attacks "white people" constantly, Michelle Obama attacks white people openly, and now, Obama is openly attacking white people. So much for inspiring "unity."
3. The other consistent thing about Obama supporters is that, rather than actually refute anything said about the candidate that is less than positive, the Obama supporter cries racism and "liar." This is all the more risible when Obama himself has conceded error, and his supporters continue to cry "liar" when that error is pointed out.

There is an even deeper, and more egregious aspect to the monolithic support of Obama by black people.
For years, we have been told that it is wrong to stereotype and generalize about "black people"-we have been told that black people are not a monolithic group, and vote in a diverse manner.
Well, that's bs, isn't it? IF you agree that black people DO NOT all "think alike" then the reason some, who would otherwise vote for someone else, are voting for Obama is: RACISM.
Moreover, why didn't Obama refer to people in depressed urban areas, who "cling to religon and guns" and "fear people who aren't like them"?????
The reason: he excuses black racism. And, he attributes any failure to support him among whtie voters as "racist."
This man harbors deep-seated conflicts about his racial idenity, and clear animus toward whites.
That bigotry does not, I believe, belong in the President: white or black.

We are bitter.
We have been lied to for 7 years. Our children are dying in foreign wars. Our jobs are gone and our bills are up. Many people here do cling to one or two things which override all others and fog the big picture.
In my area "family values"and "war on terror" are used.
Tee-shirts saying "My mommy is a woman, my daddy is a man" were passed out during the last election. Fear tactics.
Those gays will destroy marriage.
Those terrorists are going to blow up your school.
When I say "they", I mean my friends, my family, pretty soon, me. My husband just lost his job of 13 years.
Loss of faith in elected officials is part of it but how they are portrayed by the media plays a role.
They vote for what they believe in. "family values" or "war on terror". Never mind it is an empty concept. . Never mind that we have had no "terrorists" here.
The government is not helping. Rollbacks in food stamps, red tape and pride keeps people from getting assistance. Forget about heathcare.
They don't have time to worry about it. The baby needs milk, gas is $3.50, and your job is 40 miles away.
I live here and if Obama can't even tell the truth without getting slammed, what kind of politician do you want? We had better wake up. The negative spin is on. He told the truth, I know because I live here.

"Elitist" is used by the party's power people to keep upstarts in their places.

Your wrong... "Elitist" has been the "buzz" word from the wing of the Democratic Party that tends toward the right. They use it casually. It is a habit.

The word "elitist" is planned. It is meant to present a negative image of those who are educated, or who may have good incomes. There should not...in this country and in this party...be any suggestion that being educated or having enough to get by is "elite".

That is a shameful way to attack those in your own party.

Let's go back to 2003.

109 million in 7 years. Bill Clinton taking full (and to date the most?) advantage of post-presidential perks. after President Hillary Clinton, more presidential perks. more 400,000 lectures. more lobbying favors for donations to personal foundation and personal income ....

elitist will be a mild term.
