Axelrod

Surrogates to Sen. Barack Obama said on Saturday that while the Senator regrets the phrasing of his remarks, in which he said Pennsylvanians were bitter and "clinged" to guns, religion and anti-immigration sentiment because of economic frustrations, he would ultimately not apologize for them.

"He regrets the wording of the remarks and he was sorry for the offense that anybody took from them," said Obama's senior strategist, David Axelrod, "but I think the most important thing is that the essence of what he said is something he feels very strongly about. There is a real anger among many in the communities... they are tired of politicians who come around at election time and express their solicitude as part of a tactic and don't follow through on it."

The defense of Obama, who is under withering attacks that his comments - first reported by Huffington Post's Off The Bus - were elitist, out of touch and condescending, did not end there. Other surrogates to the Senator insisted that Obama's political opponents should be the ones offering regret for politicizing the issue.

"The only apologies that would be appropriate would be from the Sens. [Hillary] Clinton and [John] McCain's campaigns who are trying to make an issue out of this," said John Futterman, mayor of Bradick, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately for Futterman, such apologies seem all but certain not to happen. Indeed, an hour before the Obama campaign convened its conference call, the Clinton camp held one of its own. In it, surrogates to the New York Democrat took repeated jabs at the "bitterness" remark, saying, on several occasions, that it made Obama out-of-touch and unelectable in small-town America.

"I found them to be condescending and disappointing," said Clinton's national campaign co-chair and Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack. "They reflected in my view a flawed reading of people who live in small towns in Pennsylvania and other states... I found his remarks undercut his message of hope... What they want is not a pat on the head from a presidential candidate; what they want is a pat on the back."

In addition to the call, the Clinton campaign peppered reporters throughout Saturday with video clips and written statements of surrogates (in Indiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania - three upcoming primary states) criticizing Obama's remarks. In a separate interview with Talking Points Memo, Geoffrey Garin, Clinton's new chief strategist, said the comments could be "damaging" to Obama in a general election and would serve as fodder for Sen. Clinton to woo the support of superdelegates.

Even Obama and his supporters acknowledged that his words didn't come off right.

Story continues below

"I don't think I would have used the same words that he used. I don't think that people are bitter, I do think people are angry," said Rick Gray, mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "I think people are upset about the economic conditions of this county... They see executives getting large bonuses and they see themselves losing their pension and their health care. And there is a level of anger that is just seething there."

Acknowledging a phrasing error seems to be one component of Obama's hopes to stem the blowback from his remarks. In addition, his campaign, starting on Friday evening, has sought to call out Sen. Clinton as the one more out of touch with small town America: pointing both to revelations that she and her husband have made more than $100 million since leaving the White House, and the fact that her campaign (and not Obama's) accepts donations from registered Washington lobbyists.

On Saturday, Clinton's surrogates were asked whether the later issue concerned them in the same way manner that they were about Obama's remarks. The answer, among all six conference call attendees was a resounding: "No."

Clinton, they retorted, had stronger roots and a greater understanding of small town issues -- lobbyist money or individual income aside.

"I think it is difficult for a democratic candidates to be succeed in a general election if he misunderstands people who live in small towns," said Vilsack. "We are going to have to have someone on the top of my ticket who understands [god and guns]."

Senator Obama's comment on bitterness has sure stirred the hornet's nest.

While I'm not sure if how he said people deal with the bitterness is necessarily true for all people, the fact is the bitterness is there - which neither McCain or Clinton have denied.

Clinton calling him an elitist is a joke. How many voters have ever seen 100 million dollars, much less having it?

I think over time this will hurt Clinton more than Obama.

News flash to the news media....yes, we are bitter. The rich get richer and the rest of us wait around for $5 gas. And Senator Clinton, as far as doing a shot and a beer to prove how much of an average joe you are, why not go one step further and head to the tattoo parlor for a tramp stamp. Come on, if you want to be one of us, do it! Commit to some ink!!

NOT about wether people are BITTER.

It's about why Obama thinks RURAL people are motivated.... to own guns...go to church...or dislike immigrants....

His training from Rev. WRIGHT comes to the forefront...

The beauty of this is that it will make Obama increasingly unsure about what he says and how he says it....

He already does a poor job of speaking off-the-cuff.....He has a THIN grasp of the facts.....

He will continue to make more GAFFS as he worries about how what he says sounds to voters when he answers questions....

I prefer his gaffes than Clintons support for NAFTA, or her having a lobbyist campaign. To me these things affect the middle class much more than what Obama said. The quicker the middle class realize that what Clinton stands for does not represent them, the better off they are.

Obama has absolutely nothing to apologize for. His word come straight from his religious tradition - and mine - and millions of other Americans.

While Hillary condemns him, hundreds of thousands of Christians across this nation are attending their Sunday morning worship services and singing one of the well-known and beloved of all Christian hymns:

Still I CLING to to the Old Rugged Cross

Yeah, that old elitist hymn . . .

Amen. It's interesting how O's trying to do the right thing and speak uncomfortable truths while the others just pay lip service to their so-called values. Last I checked, gun violence, preemptive war, social darwinism, a laughable minimum wage, and tax cuts for billionaires are not Christian values.

In fact, Jesus rails against fearmongering, selling at the temple (e.g. evangelical TV), and neglecting the poor hundreds and hundreds of times more than he says anything about gays, guns, or abortion. But hey, what does he know about Christian values.

These comments were taken out of context. Obama's overall remarks were about the dissatisfaction of Americans with the economy, losing their jobs, homes, benefits, and facing dire situations caused by government policies. If one had listened to everything, rather than a few sentences, his comments make sense, and are exactly what many people feel. The government deregulated the banking industry, which led to the credit crisis, sub-prime mortgages, decline of property values, and the devaluation of our dollar on the world market. The government is in debt $9.35-trillion, most of our notes owned by China, which puts us at their mercy (we can't bargain for fair or better trade agreements, or condemn them for their human rights record - especially since ours isn't stellar).
The administration has mortgaged our country to corporate and foreign interests, profited grotesquely and deprived us of our legal, civil and human rights in the process. A lot of folks are angry, and are now blaming immigrants, trade agreements, Moslems, Arabs and other groups for their woes, when they should be furious with our own government leadership that set this policy and agenda.

the point is why say that people in PA are bitter and cling to guns and religion (while people are laughing in the background. He can discuss all the things he wants but why put labels on a group of people. Thats racist bigot. and the other thing that makes me sick with Snob-O-Bama is that his supporters defend EVERYTHING he says and we have to look up words like RACISM, BIGOTRY, BITTER,DENOUNCE, REJECT, BAMBOOZLE,HOODWINK, TRUTH. The is Rev Wright he has no compassion for people and their situation

Here's an idea--He could go to his next stop in the countryside and say, "Those rich elites in San Franciso never hunted a varmint in their lives--they cling to their Swiss accounts and scientology because they are so self-satisfied riding on the backs of you, the taxpayer." That ought to bring people together!

Hillary Clinton is a liar and a fraud who will pretend to be whatever it takes to get your vote. She thinks people from the rust belt are all fundamentalists who carry guns and drink liquor. She has this idea that they are these cheerful caricatures who never let the hard times get them down. This is a textbook stereotype, and it's untrue. How can anyone be so blind as to buy into this pandering? Hillary grew up in a white picket fence neighborhood in Illinois, in an intact middle-class family that never suffered a moment's hardship. Her father owned a successful textiles business. She took various lessons like ballet as a child. Then she went to Wellesley. Then she went to Yale. Do you really honestly believe she's "in touch" with the working class? She is acting. Pure and simple. And sadly, some people are being fooled. They want to believe in a Clinton again. But Hillary is not Bill, and she's not bringing jobs back. She is USING PEOPLE. And that's all she's really good at.

The MOST consistent and common trait among the BushCo loyalists is to attack personally anyone making claims about CDI Controlled Demolition Inc being inside the WTC buildings just prior to 911. Why? Once every single human being understands that the reason we are at global war stems from a staged and conspired lie then the war is over. There have now been 1000's of verified conspired lies that have come from the White House. Yet somehow this lie is unthinkable. Go to any website and post this information about CDI and observe the reaction from people who are paid to watch these websites and to negate and personally attack anyone who dares post this information. As has been verified by sites such as Alex Jones the IP or internet service provider addresses are coming from government and military bases and computers. I wonder why these individuals would be attacking this information. Once you completely understand that 911 was a total fabricated lie among 1000's...the $10 Trillion dollars borrowed for this never ending terror war will become very clear as to why you must attack anyone who dares mention this information. My life has already been threatened because I discovered that the same company that detonated the levee system in New Orleans 2 days after Katrina left was also CDI.

Your response to Kennedy is a reflection of the Obama gaffe.
You come across as a comfortable upper middle class Democrat making fun of hard working class Americans.
Check out this must-see video of Obama's remarks to the San Francisco crowd. Listen to the laughter. Well-off Democrats chortling with Barrack over those stupid bitter working class Democrats who don't have enough sense to support Obama. What is sad is that there were no coverage of the "betray us" hearing on the Sunday talk.

The dumbing down of middle America continues. They are losing more in this war and the corporate media wants to focus on an at best, in artful but accurate comments by Barack Obama. Then we wonder how we ended up with George W Bush.

This is what I THINK I know so far about Barack:

Barack's FATHER was reported to be a goat-keeper from Kenya - but I think it was Barack's grandfather who apparently had enough goats to send his son (Barack's father) from Africa to the U of Hawaii.

Barack's stepfather, LoLo Soetero, took his new wife Ann and Barack to Jakarta during political chaos (see "The Year of Living Dangerously") and some have cited both Barack's bio father and stepfather as leftist (Marxist) activists.

Barack's mother has been described as naive and a free-spirited beatnik (who found the dough to get a PHD). She is praised as a single parent after divorcing two men in 6 years, then sending her son Barack to Honolulu to be raised by her mother who was a bank vice president.

Barack attended the elite Punahou prep school, which costs around $17,000 today for elementary school. Barack says that Hawaii was very diverse and that he didn't face Jim Crow racism.

Shrum said today on "Meet the Press" that Michelle and Barack just finished paying their school loans - hard to believe considering Michelle's $300K salary and corporate board position.

If you think that Barack is a phoenix arising from the ashes of American disadvantage, think again. He is a product of privilege. It is no surprise that he would stand in a multi-million dollar house in SF and talk about the bitter small town Americans who turn to guns, religion and antipathy.
