I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Bill Clinton

As the rumination continues over Barack Obama's comments about economically-depressed small town voters, statements made by Bill Clinton on the same topic -- uttered while he was running for president in 1991 -- have now surfaced.

"The reason (George H. W. Bush's tactic) works so well now is that you have all these economically insecure white people who are scared to death," Clinton was quoted saying by the Los Angeles Times in September 1991.

A couple months later, Joe Klein, writing for the Sunday Times, reported that Clinton made the following remarks:

"You know, he [Bush] wants to divide us over race. I'm from the South. I understand this. This quota deal they're gonna pull in the next election is the same old scam they've been pulling on us for decade after decade after decade. When their economic policies fail, when the country's coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the most economically insecure white men and scare the living daylights out of them. They know if they can keep us looking at each other across a racial divide, if I can look at Bobby Rush and think, Bobby wants my job, my promotion, then neither of us can look at George Bush and say, 'What happened to everybody's job? What happened to everybody's income? What ... have ... you ... done ... to ... our ... country?'"

For comparison's sake, here is Obama's statement, reported by Mayhill Fowler for Huffington Post's OffTheBus:

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama (laugher), then that adds another layer of skepticism (laughter). [...]

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

What do you think -- are they similar?

Update: Jason Linkins notes a statement from Harvard political scientist Theda Skocpol to Talking Points Memo, which reads in part:

I have been in meetings with the Clintons and their advisors where very clinical things were said in a very-detached tone about unwillingness of working class voters to trust government -- and Bill Clinton -- and about their unfortunate (from a Clinton perspective) proclivity to vote on life-style rather than economic issues. To see Hillary going absolutely over the top to smash Obama for making clearly more humanly sympathetic observations in this vein, is just amazing.

More here.

Two points:

Obama never said "white people" when making his comments he just said "people in small towns"

and

An ARG poll is not worth the paper it is written on - everyone knows they are in the tank for the Clintons that is why there is always a star next to their polls on RCP.

The question Obama was answering was about persuading white, blue collar voters in PA and IN. You can hate it all you want, but that was the question he was answering. In his answer he specifically said that people are bitter and they cling to their guns and religion and that they stay away from anything "different" and they have a hard time voting for a black guy named Barack.

It is not only elitist, it is racially insensitive and offensive.

Just out of curiosity, CraigMM, was it also racially insensitive when former President Clinton said that "economically insecure whites were scared to death?"

Please reply. I look forward to your answer (spin).

Stop living in denial and truly listen to what he said. He provided a voice for those people in small towns that he met when NO ONE else has. It doesn't matter what race they are - he want's people to understand what is really going on. Stop trying to make "Obama's a racist" happen. It's not going to happen.

Craig, you are inventing again. He was talking about why people vote the way they do. When they are economically frustrated, they move to cultural voting issues like gun rights and religiously-motivated voting issues like anti-abortion and anti-gay-rights, etc. Why? Because voting in their economic self-interest does not work, they've found. Republicans have kept these groups down by appealing to the single-issue cultural flash points. Democrats can win back these voters by showing them that voting in their economic self-interest WILL work this time. It is you who are misrepresenting things.

So what was it when Clinton supporter Ed Rendell said those same people wouldn't vote for Obama because he is black?

See . . . you reap what you sow . . . if Bill Clinton had not messed up Al Gore's chances to win the presidential race, then Al Gore may have told Bill AND Hillary about the internet. Then the Clintons would know about this resource people use to dig up all their "stuff" that seems to constantly come back to haunt them. LOLOLOL

Obama is RIGHT! Why do so many middle and low income voters vote Republican, even though it comepletely works against their own self interest? Social issues that have much less affect on their daily lives!

Hillary wants to ignore the fact that she supported NAFTA, and her husband made $800,000 speaking for the Columbian trade agreement. THAT has effected Pennsylvanias more than anything!

he wasn't asked why they vote republican.. He was aksed why they were voting for Hillary instead of him in the primary.

Chandler02's point is well taken, however. People do seem to be voting for a government that is manifestly not working in their own best interest and it's happening because they are convinced that the system can't do anything for their economic situation, and they have no choice but to choose if they vote, so they choose based on these wedge issues. Honestly--how is banning stem cell research going to get me a job?

From the New York Times: "At the fund-raiser in San Francisco last Sunday, Mr. Obama outlined challenges facing his presidential candidacy in the coming primaries in Pennsylvania and Indiana, particularly persuading white working-class voters..."

Obama made a racially insensitive and offensive remark. He said that white, blue coller workers in PA and IN were bitter and were clinging to their guns and religion instead of supporting a black guy named Barack.

He has refused to apologize for these remarks. It is unacceptable. If HRC said this about blacks who weren't voting for her, HuffPo would go through the roof. Obama has gottena free pass on everything else and there is no way that he deserves to be let off the hook for this comment.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:43 PM on 04/14/2008

Ummm...did you not read this article? Oh, I get it. Even though it is so clear that HRC is just playing politics (as evidenced by the fact her hubby made the same remarks), you post this nonsense about Obama needing to apologize?

What planet do you people come from? It's like when W. gets those low approval ratings, and I wonder who in the world still approves of him?

I am a former HRC supporter, and her inept campaign - problems with leadership, running our of money, not planning on any contests after Super Tuesday - is what changed my mind.

If she can't run a campaign, how can she run a country?

Can you please answer this? Can any HRC answer this?

W ran a great campaign in 2000 and look where that got him.

Bill Clinton was talking about voter habits and GOP strategies. Obama was answering a question about why he thought he was having difficulty attracting white, blue coller voters. Deny it all you want, but that was the question he was answering. He could have diffused the situation by apologizing right away for his ignorant and insensitive statement, but he didn't. He chose to refuse to apologize and even know he has only apologized if anyone was offended by his remark.

I am a progressive democrat and believe that Obama has made a terrible statement and needs to answer for that. If HRC said what Obama said, people would be outraged here. Obama should be held to the same standard as HRC and he should be called out for his behavior.

An inept campaign? Sure, the campaign has had some big problems but in the latest AP poll, it's Hillary that's beating McCain NOT Obama. 50% of Democrats still support Hillary. Hillarys' going to win Pennsylvania. If Obama is this magical, historic figure why isn't he running away with the campaign? Obama's message is clearly not working well enough.

Craig, you may wish he had said what you outlined above, but he did not. The question he was asked was about Pennsylvania voting habits. The reference to guns and religion was about those things as VOTING ISSUES. He said that people cling to single-issues that are a strong part of their culture when they feel economically hopeless. They vote on those single-issues then, like gun rights, or anti-gay marriage (religion) rather than voting for their economic self-interest. It is very typical of the mainstream media not to provide a context for the soundbites they play, because by doing so they fan the indignation of people like you and keep things in the news. They have no interest in actually telling the truth to you or informing you. Don't fall for this. Obama said nothing condescending or insensitive. His only gaffe was not foreseeing that a rabid and self-interested media was going to spin a truthful and informed remark into something it never was.

You may not agree with what he said, but his remarks were not at all racial. We have his exact quote from the fundraiser, why don't you use it? Oh, because then you wouldn't be able to put your obviously biased and ignorant spin on his actual remarks.

I grew up in an all white, industrial Indiana town. Obama is speaking to a truth. He is saying that a long list of government policies, tax breaks, and economic realities has made them bitter and fearful. BINGO! There is nothing racist in what he is saying. It is the exploiters who want to label it racist. I hear Obama's words as compassionate, and not hateful or resentful.

Obama finally answered the question that many of us have been asking for a long time now, 'why do working class Americans keep voting against their own economic interests?’ It's sure refreshing to hear a candidate talking like a real person for a change; I really get tired of all the placating whores !

Americans have tended to give their elected officials the benefit of a doubt when it comes to doing what's best for everyone. Considering that most elected officials are now in the pockets of corporate America, that's a benefit they just lost.

If you want your country back, stop voting these local and federal incumbents back into office. I will easily trade Clinton's so-called experience for the optimism of a populist like Obama; he's finding that those advisors, who destroyed Kerry's chances in 04 with a 'Me Too' campaign theme, should be ignored. However, he's also paying the price now with the corporate owned Main Stream Media mounting a full fledged frontal attack to discredit him, Hillary will be much easier to knock off in November considering that Conservatives and most Americans of faith have a long abiding hate for her already.

A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 25% agree with the Democratic frontrunner while 19% are not sure."

I think you should probably do a little more research before you celebrate a 20 point lead! No one ever thought Clinton would loose PA, but she certainly won't win by 20 pts. Bottom line, she won't catch up to him at this pace. Like it or not, she'd have to beat him by about 60/40 in ALL of the remaining primaries to get the nomination.

We Democrats should start focusing on November and beating MCBUSH!

Yes and "Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters agreed with Obama’s statement that 'People are fed up. They're angry and they're frustrated and they're bitter, and they want to see a change in Washington.'" also from the same Rasmussen poll.

Both sides can spin the numbers to their advantage.

Because the headline "Scandal Involving Clinton" has no effect anymore. The parsing and spinning of Obama's words makes for a relatively bigger impact. The smallest semantic controversy by Obama is news, while a lie or scandal by a Clinton is passe, and only elicits a shrug.

This has nothing at all to do with pandering to liberal voters in San Francisco.

Black leaders who speak out politically about anything remotely having to do with whites or white america automatically run the risk of being associated with black militantism, racism, and now elitism and mush put back in their respective places. That's why McCain and the Clintons feel that Obama is being uppity.

Otherwise, the only black leaders who would advocate on behalf of Americans of ALL races, would resign themselves to the same old smile, buck-dance, and begging for negro handouts. So DAMN any black man or woman in America to speak the truth about the sorry state of affairs in this country.

Shocking. A double-standard at play? Every twitch and yawn by Bill and Hillary has been lampooned in the public forum for this entire campaign. Suddenly Obama says something stupid, albeit true - Americans are bitter (but c'mon, you're supposed to appeal to the disenfranchised), and everyone goes nuts attacking the Clintons for seizing the opportunity to exploit such a statement.

Calm down folks. Last year, Bill and Hillary were considered the ONLY *STAR* DEMOCRATS in America. If you reduce them to dirt and scraps, you better hope Obama is strong enough to carry that torch for the next decade. Otherwise this party is supremely fucked.

If all of the new voters that Obama has brought into the Dem party decide they're done with Dem BS because of the Rovian campaign that Hil is running, then the Democratic party is doomed anyway. In fact, if Obama isn't the nominee, I strongly expect the number of green card applications to Canada to spike dramatically.

Amazing as it seems, the Clintons don't seem prepared for the internet age. When they adopted the Rove "Create a lie and repeat it over and over", they neglected to realize that history can be called up easily now.

The Bosnia fable - her multiple repetitions of the tale recorded - the facts on display from live footage.

When Hillary mocked Obama's message of hope, there was Bill's earlier remarks saying to always reach for hope.

When Hillary claims "I spoke out against Iraq before Obama did" - not only was that laughable on face value, it was quickly dispelled with a few keystrokes.

I love it. The carnival hucksters exposed.

I just heard Hillary say "Obama looks down on you" - right, another Rove tactic - take your weakness and accuse your opponent of that weakness. Hillary counts on dumb people who don't fact check her fables.
