I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Bill Clinton

As the rumination continues over Barack Obama's comments about economically-depressed small town voters, statements made by Bill Clinton on the same topic -- uttered while he was running for president in 1991 -- have now surfaced.

"The reason (George H. W. Bush's tactic) works so well now is that you have all these economically insecure white people who are scared to death," Clinton was quoted saying by the Los Angeles Times in September 1991.

A couple months later, Joe Klein, writing for the Sunday Times, reported that Clinton made the following remarks:

"You know, he [Bush] wants to divide us over race. I'm from the South. I understand this. This quota deal they're gonna pull in the next election is the same old scam they've been pulling on us for decade after decade after decade. When their economic policies fail, when the country's coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the most economically insecure white men and scare the living daylights out of them. They know if they can keep us looking at each other across a racial divide, if I can look at Bobby Rush and think, Bobby wants my job, my promotion, then neither of us can look at George Bush and say, 'What happened to everybody's job? What happened to everybody's income? What ... have ... you ... done ... to ... our ... country?'"

For comparison's sake, here is Obama's statement, reported by Mayhill Fowler for Huffington Post's OffTheBus:

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama (laugher), then that adds another layer of skepticism (laughter). [...]

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

What do you think -- are they similar?

Update: Jason Linkins notes a statement from Harvard political scientist Theda Skocpol to Talking Points Memo, which reads in part:

I have been in meetings with the Clintons and their advisors where very clinical things were said in a very-detached tone about unwillingness of working class voters to trust government -- and Bill Clinton -- and about their unfortunate (from a Clinton perspective) proclivity to vote on life-style rather than economic issues. To see Hillary going absolutely over the top to smash Obama for making clearly more humanly sympathetic observations in this vein, is just amazing.

Why is this headline news??? WHY NOT...
"McCain More Conservative Than His Image"
"19 Dead Soldiers in Iraq - Last Week Deadliest This Year for US Soldiers"
Arianna, I'm sick and tired of HuffPost's daily slanted, divisive coverage of our candidates. I was an avid Hillary supporter but switched to Barack. This is supposed to be a liberal/progressive site that should be fair to ALL our candidates. This mess about what Bill said upteen years ago and what Barack said at a private fundraiser (WHICH WAS MADE PUBLIC FIRST BY HUFFPOST) is as nasty as what Malkin, Limbaugh and Hannity do to our candidates.
Can you please, please, please get your team re-focused on what is really important...if you still remember what that is??? And stop trying to be Drudge Report Lite!!!

My fear Bill, is that your wife and you get back into the White House. The Clinton's could shoot for a trilion dollar bank roll on the backs of all those little people they care so much about. 110 million is petty change to them now.

For those of you who are taking this article as evidence of HuffPo's bias toward Obama, may I remind you that the story of Obama's "gaffe" first appeared here?

Well, yes these things are true. Religion, gun laws, immigration-- these are the wedge issues republicans have been praying on for years. Should Obama have been more articulate? Yes, he should say-- we are going to fix our economy and not let these issues divide us. Whose team are the Clintons on? Same team as McCain. Go Obama.

Hillary has made it clear, with words out of her own mouth, that she is not "for" the democratic party if she doesn't get the nomination. I'm not going to even bother to use the word "win" for her as we all know that she's playing this behind-the-scenes game to get what she wants.

"If [Republicans] could cut funding for Medicare, Medicaid, education, and the environment, middle-class Americans would see fewer benefits from their tax dollars, feel more resentful paying taxes, and become even more receptive to their appeals for tax cuts and their strategy of waging campaigns on divisive social and cultural issues like abortion, gay rights, and guns."

-- Bill Clinton, in his 2004 memoirs, My Life, making the same argument as Sen. Barack Obama.

These are NOT the same comments. Obama was talking about why he was having a hard time getting white, blue collar voters to support him. These voters are suppoorting HRC, who is a Democrat.

Bill Clinton was talking about political strategies of the GOP. He never mentioned any race. They are NOT the same thing. This is HuffPo trying to change the topic from what Obama said. Obama's comments have NOTHING to do with Bill Clinton.

These are offensive comments from Obama and he should be held accountable for them. When HuffPo tries to spin his comments into "no big deal" it just gives the far right more ammunition to cast the Democratic party as elitists with "far left ideologies" who are far out of the mainstream of America. This is very dangerous for the GE.

Obama made a big mistake and he needs to be called out for it and held accountable for his remarks.

If lying about sniper fire in bosnia can be white washed as "misstatements", then anything Obama said should certainly fit into a word like "misstatement" I just don't see how acknowledging that some Americans turn to religion to get through difficult times, and some Americans turn to their guns ala Timothy McVey, is all that awful. But, if it is his choice of words that has you bothered, then this nothing more than a misstatement.

Sounds like the voice of frustrated citizens is being channeled by candidate Obama. And as usual, the voice of special interest and big business is being channeled by candidate Clinton.

Obama is holding government officials accountable for their actions and responsibility to the citizens of the United States.

This is a government for the people and by the people . . . not for special interest and by special interest.

Obama: You know, we could use a few more internment camps in this country, concentration camps, if you will, for the illegals.

Hillary: My opponent has gone outside the bounds of decency to make extreme and repugnant proposals that we must reject clearly and absolutely.

HuffPost/MSM: Hillary Goes Negative to Pander to the Jewish, Japanese, and Hispanic Vote!!!

No, no. This is how she would respond if Obama made such a proposal:

"My opponent has made extreme and repugnant proposals that we should reject and denounce. You know, I've been all over this country, and I don't see anybody having a problem with illegal immigrants. This is a loving nation, and the American people want to welcome these immigrants into their hometowns with open arms. And of course, these immigrants need someone to fight for them. I'll fight for them, and not only because I'm a fighter, but because I love immigrants too. In fact, I used to be friends with a lot of illegal immigrants when I was growing up. I've been fighting for them ever since, and I'm going to fight for them in the White House!"

All joking aside, my point is, if she called Obama an elitist and stopped there, she might be fine. But she's overplaying her hand by making disingenuous statements, pandering, and fitting this new scenario to her old talking points instead of taking the opportunity to reinvigorate and refresh her campaign.

They are different statements. One statement talks about political tactics used by the GOP and the other talks about why white, blue collar workers are not supporting a black candidate. This is the pivot that HuffPo is tyring to make on this problpem for Obama. They are trying to twist what was actually said by Obama and morph it into something Bill Clinton said and then have the conversation be about Bill Clinton.

Obama's statements were elitist, but they were also racially offensive. Why does he seem to have a problem with white people? His grandmother is "a typical white person" and white, blue collar voters in PA and IN who aren't supporting him are racists who cling to their guns and religion instead of voting for a black guy named Barack.

If HRC said anything close to this, HuffPo would go ballistic over her comments. If they want to have any shred of credibility, they need to call out Obama for his comments to the same degree of severity they would call out HRC. Do I think Obama is a racist? No. Do I think that Obama has specific views of people that may not be in-line with his image? Yes. Do I think that his comment in San Francisco was elitist and racially insensitive and offensive? Absolutely.

His comments won't bother any of the Obama supporters on HuffPo, but it will affect many of the voters whose support the Democrats will need in the GE.

See the love in their eyes....the Clinton 'love affair' always on stage. Sure beat's the day in WH when staff had to listen to the pair of foul mouthed, arrogant, destructive abuse to each other, but what is it really saying about the 'gaffe's' in their own 'unfortunate statements' and how the public and media displays this 'overdone affection' for each other? It's the 'economy stupid', his own, her own economic gain, legacy, status, not your economy, not the world's economic security.....'theirs'.

Their relationship...the playbook of the Clinton's, the facade of deceit is great. Only to them. We are not interested in them as a singular or a plural, nothing. The World is begging you to bow out before the release of 'who you really are', must be printed for you Clinton Family to bow out 'gracefully'. Consider it a message from 'above'.

Since Hillary is an expert on Bible stories and parables, not exactly the Bible and God's covenant with 'his people', but their own little 'books of faith', when they need 'guidance and direction'. Please step down from your 'dirty base' and go gracefully. This is a Presidential election, not a boxing match or the Dixie Mafia. Please be humble and stop making a fool of yourself.

Could the last modern vestiges of white power reside in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Indiana? To say that he is out of touch with these blue collar white people, is it also a way to say that he is a racist? It is a way to say that he is a closet black nationalist out of touch with lower middle class white people? Is it a way to say that he is really just like Rev. Wright? There is a subliminal race message lodge in the “out of touch,” elitism line. Black elitism is an absurdity at worst, and humorous at best. Lets’ get real! Any body growing up on food stamps and having to pay off college loans, understands God’s Grace and appreciates the opportunities that this country has to offer.

"Black elitism is an absurdity"? You clearly don't live in Atlanta, Ga. There have even been several books written the black elitist here. The Jackson (Maynard, not Michael) family. The Herndons. The Dobbs. Black elitism is alive and well here.

Not really. Black elitism is an attempt at cultural mockery. White folks can take it away as soon as they want. It's meaningless.

Obama's latest version of what he meant in San Francisco

Well, first of all, you know, Scripture talks about clinging to what's good... What I was saying is that when economic hardship hits in these communities, what people have is- they've got family, they've got their faith., they've got the traditions that have been passed on to them from generation to generation. Those aren't bad things.

Yes, they cling to their traditions like anti-immigration, anti-trade, antipathy for people not like them (racism), those aren't bad things according to Obama's new explanation.

You have no clue what "racism" means. Look it up.

Other than that, Obama is spot on. The only mistake he made is include gun nuts in that list. I doubt that people start loving guns because they are poor. That they do because they are nuts.

Boy there's a lot of angry folks out there - angry because hearing the truth hurts. You nailed it Obama - this type of twisting has been going on for years, but no one had the cahones to say it out loud. Good for you. I guess those angry folks would prefer that the lies continue and that their government continues to ignore them. Grow up people. Frankly, I welcome the truth - we could use more of it and less political games. Sorry Hill, you overplayed yourself on this one and lookie lookie, it's coming back to bite you again. If you'd run our country the way you've been running your campaign - you could in fact be a bigger loser the GW.

Right now I'm reading the chapter on RACE in OBAMA'S book "The Audacity Of Hope". Powerful stuff in there! The truth hurts! And what we need is OBAMA TRUTH in this country. No one is served by pretending the poor are happy to stay poor. Only an ELITIST like HR Clinton would think people in poor rural areas don't think they've gotten the shaft from government. Because she never sticks around long enough to get the real story on her constituents here in NY State. The poor areas have a Hillary flyby every now and again for a photo op.

But overall, Hillary Clinton is largely out of touch with rural NY.
