I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Pat Buchanan

It was an otherwise normal day in the Land of the McLaughing Group. John got to bellow, "The answer is HILLARY." And nobody minded that they weren't as relentlessly dogmatic in the Papism as Pat Buchanan, and the whole panel kinda sorta agreed on the issue of China and the Olympics, but because this was the McLaughlin Group, they all agreed to pillory each other with loud sounds from their cakeholes for our amusement. But, about halfway through the show, Pat Buchanan said something that didn't amuse - not one little bit I'm afraid!

BUCHANAN: But I'll tell you what's coming, John. Petraeus pointed right at the special groups supported by Iran, as the main problem now. They are firing rockets into the Green Zone, they're responsible for Basra. The president said that Iran better not make the wrong choice. We're looking at 140,000 troops there by the end of the year, and very possibly airstrikes in Iran before this fall.

Oh. Fantastic.

[WATCH.]

Later, Pat went back to this scary imagining, predicting: "Fifty-fifty chance of U.S. airstrikes on Iran by October." Paging Dr. Strangelove!

It was an otherwise normal day in the Land of the McLaughing Group. John got to bellow, "The answer is HILLARY." And nobody minded that they weren't as relentlessly dogmatic in the Papism as Pat Buc...

I rarely agree with him, but I think he is correct... Petraus is a puppet of Bush, he will say anything Bush wants. Fallon was fired...and now Iran is being called the central problem in Iraq rather than AQ.. which was bullshit to begin with, and now this is greater bullshit.... The Iranian president does not have to land at night with a plastic turkey, is greeted as a friend rather than an occupier, and Iran helped negotiate the cease fire... but Bush and particularly Cheney could not give a fuck about our troops or our country and these vicious bastards will probably bomb Iran and leave this country in a greater mess for a much longer time.

Bush has already declared war powers unto hm self with the war on "terror" was a farce. So what is new here?

Let's see: three carrier groups in the Persian Gulf, recent trips by Darth Vader and The Decider to the Region, a recent "talk" where he morphed Iraq problems into Iran, suspension of further troop withdrawals and Israel is conducting civil defense exercises.

Meanwhile the Democrats, especially the candidates, say nothing for fear of upsetting the AIPAC lobby and jeopardizing their hopes. Never mind the potential destabilizing of the world, the lack of any moral concerns or the further negative impacts across the board for this country. No we, or our little crappy puppet state, or is it the other way around, will commit another war crime.

It's enough to make one sick. Or dare I say not proud to be an American!

If I were the Iranian military, I'd start the retaliation by taking out all the oil facilities across the Persian Gulf, and any along the Red Sea. That should drive oil to above $500 per barrel, and put gas at around $20 per gallon for most of the world.

Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Pat is against the Iraq debacle. His magazine, The American Conservative http://www.amconmag.comm) has a number of writers who slam the occupation in various ways. It represents the paleoconservative movement. Of course they attack dems, but the outrage at the neocons gets the lionshare of the focus. Long time critics of Pat consider him an anti-semite. His prediction on the Iran bombing merely reflects his view that the neocons will push Bush to bomb now, so as to not allow a new administration to get cold feet. Is he right? 50/50 is an easy call. I used to watch the McLaughlin Group for laughs, but the old gang, (Clift, Buchanan, Novak, Germond and Kondracke) were funnier than the later groupings. And for the question about his military service, come on! Of course he didn't serve. (Bum knee if I recall.)

Once a Democratic Congress was elected in 06, Buchanan became pro-war.

Years ago Congress gave the President de facto power to declare war. Now all it can do is sit and whine a lot. What they need to do is impeach and convict, then the Constitution will be restored.

This government is being governed by a President who sees enemies where there are none, who sees a sound economic system as a bankrupted system; who sees persistent trade deficits as a sign of strength; who sees the outsourcing of whole industries and American competence as fundamentally sound economic policy; who sees opposing points of view as indicators of national treachery--even treason; who sees massive swindle and fraud as a normal way of doing business; who sees the Constiturion as a serious impediment to performing the functions of governance; who sees advice and consent as unwarranted;who depends upon the Almighty always to be at our side and steer us through outrageous inflation, penury, unemployment and a credit crisis. Such a government has sown a perilous prosperity, a dark present and a dangerous future. Such are the ways of the decline and falling of another Republic.
