Hadley

President Bush's National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley appeared on ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos and repeatedly confused Nepal and Tibet.

Discussing how Bush has "no reason not to go" to this summer's Olympic games in Beijing and how boycotting them would be wrong, Hadley discussed the outcry over Tibet and the US response, only he kept saying Nepal.

"If countries are really concerned about Nepal, we shouldn't have this sort of non-issue of opening ceremonies or not. They should do the hard work of quiet diplomacy to urge the Chinese government -- in their interest -- to take advantage of this opportunity to do something," Hadley said.

He went on, "The way to deal with the issue of Nepal is not by some -- a statement that you're not going to the opening ceremonies and say, therefore, I checked the Nepal box."

And it didn't end there. "What he's doing on Nepal is what we think the international community ought to be doing, which is approaching the Chinese privately through diplomatic channels and sending a very firm message of concern for human rights, a concern for what's happening in Nepal, urging the Chinese government to understand that it is in their interest to reach out to representatives of the Dalai Lama, and to show, while the whole world is watching China, that they are determined to treat their citizens with dignity and respect. There is an opportunity here."

Nepal, which shares a border with Tibet and which is an independent constitutional monarchy, has about 29 million people, is 10% Buddhist and is not the home of the Dalai Lama.

I was watching this ass hat, and I kept waiting for George to say" don't you mean Tibet?". Now this leads me to believe that George is as uninformed as Our NSA. Now as to an actual cabinet member that is so stupid that he does not know, after weeks of news coverage, that Tibet is the issue and not Nepal, gives me the screaming meemies!. This ass-hat is in charge of the security of the US! If there is not a concerted effort to get him out of government, and by this I mean ANY government post (that includes appointed dog catcher) it is proof that anyone with intelligence will begin stoking up on guns and food, as the stupid have truly inherited the earth.

bush, his handlers and his sycophants don't need to know anything... "god" provides all the knowledge they need.. he comes riding up to the White House on a dinosaur every evening and imparts "His" word to them and then they go forth and destroy, maim and kill in "His" name... what a wonderful world.

I bet many Americans do not know the difference.
I thought Nepal was part of India, not independent, but at least
I knew that Tibet IS associated with China. And it's not my JOB
to know the difference. It's pretty easy for an unskilled & unkind
goverment to lead the ignorant astray.

Yours is a sad commentary on the education of so many people in this country. If you realize that Nepal is a separate country now, learn something about it. Elections are currently going on there.

And Tibet is associated with China only in that China invaded Tibet and nearly destroyed it, its holy places, killing hundreds and thousands of Tibetans, especially Buddhist monks and nuns. They took over and turned it into a Communist state. The Dali Lama escaped in the 1950s and has been in exile ever since. This is what the fuss is about peachfuzz.

The Tibetans want their country back.

The Bush Administration is a pathetic laughingstock.

They will say Hadley misspoke. Right! This time it is not a lie, it is just flat out ignorance!

Yes I KNOW enough about Tibet & China, that is why I knew it was not Nepal.

I know what the fuss is about. And BushCo should know much more since
Bush is a huge Dali Lama fan.

Maybe Stephanopoulos was willing to let Hadley continue to show his ignorance. Sometimes silence is golden. Or maybe he did not know Hadley was making a mistake!

His job on that show is to clarify issues so I doubt that he was showcasing Hadley's ignorance. He just didn't catch it.

George probably has no idea that Tibet and Nepal are different countries. He has never impressed me as anything but a Clinton loyalist.

What has now happened is that those fools in your college class that yell out, "will this be on the exam?" have now become elected politicians.

You used to have to have credentials for these jobs.

He could have confused Tibet with California and no one would care--the neocon chickenhawks get a pass on truth and accuracy in their jobs by virtueof being so darn tough and smart.

Indded, a promotion is in order.
