Watch: Obama On Annie Oakley

Barack Obama hammered rival Hillary Clinton for her denunciation of his comments at a fundraiser in San Francisco, and he criticized her recent admission over the weekend that she was a hunter:

"Shame on her," Obama said, echoing one of Clinton's own atacks on him. "Shame on her, she knows better."

Obama said he was disappointed with her for her response and then launched into a new criticism of Clinton over her recent admission of being a hunter, and compared her sarcastically to Annie Oakley.

"She's running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen, how she values the Second Amendment, she's talking like she's Annie Oakley! Hillary Clinton's out there like she's on the duck blind every Sunday, she's packin' a six shooter! C'mon! She knows better. That's some politics being played by Hillary Clinton. I want to see that picture of her out there in the duck blinds."

For those who don't get it, anything he says, whether it's Annie Oakley, bitter, or grandmother, will call up the same tired response: he can't, he's not, a litany of whining. The sad thing is maybe, just maybe, Obama may have greatness in him; that is, he may be able to engage the American populace, especially the youth with enough energy and numbers to make a difference. Annie Oakley became endentured when her father died in debt. She became a white endentured servent to a man whom she hated and whom she called "the wolf". She helped feed her impoverished mother and younger siblings by hunting. She used a rifle not for politics but for food. She earned her living, as a adult as a target and pigeon marksman, on stage and in controled competitions.

Obama's ignorance of his allusion is complete and is an insult to a poor white woman who was enslaved to her father's debt and who fed and supported her family and earned an honest living in an era when few honorable professions were open to women. Why would a wealthy man disparage decent hard working women?

Or else Obama has decided to complement Hillary by comparing her to a remarkable woman.

Annie Oakley, for those of you who don't know her story, helped her mother put food on the table and pay off the mortgage by shooting game in the woods after her father died.. She went on to become an international celebrity, taught other women to shoot, supported a lot of girls by paying their college tuition, and was later the object of a smear campaign by William Randolph Hearst. In response, she went around the country and testified in civil suits against all the newspapers tinvolved. She won almost all the claims, including a big payout from Hearst himself, even though he had sent investigators to her home town to try and dig up some actual dirt on her.

The reason I bring this up is because Obama's characterization of Oakley (and Clinton, whose roots are also blue-collar) only underscores the thrust of his earlier remarks. People who live in the midwest don't deserve to be stereotyped, no matter who's doing it. In this case she was trying to pander to gun owners by pretending to be a gunslinging all-American duck killer, and she caricatured HERSELF, like Dukakis in the tank.

So no, in fact the situation is quite the reverse. It is you who are taking his comments and assigning meaning that is nonexistent to what he was saying.

She ain't no Annie Oakley. She should be such a straight-shooter. But to put an end to this silliness, she should stop pretending to be something or someone she's not. It's been her problem all along.
