Maher Pope

Bill Maher ended his latest episode of "Real Time" with a "new rule" about the pope. Pegged to the recently raided polygamist compound in Texas and the pontiff's visit to the US this week, it had his guests in stitches and left the audience gasping.

Here cometh the other Bill, Donohue, to protest that Maher is persecuting Catholics.

Oh yeah...and it makes me sick how smug he is about the "Midwest" and the people who live there. Like Los Angeles is the epicenter of this country's intelligentsia. Good lord. That place is a cesspool.

And it makes us sick the way you midwesterners strut around like you're the real Americans!

Sorry but you're hangers on at best!
This nation was begun in New England!
The ideas were nurtured here, and the idea of America was planted here!
We allow you guys to be Americans...don't abuse that privilege...Cletus!

Ok there people get a grip. There are good peeps all over, dont go batty over some redneck getting upset at the leftcoasters. Most people are full of crap anyhow and we all need to come to grips with that. We need to stop believing everything we think. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and many more "Midwestern" states are now leaning heavily towards the left. I give the East Coast props for implementing the republic, however most of our "Corporate Elite" are schooled there. If you really want to do us a favor, eat the rich while they are young before they become president of the united states.

That sort of reeks of the old saying by Americans in France, "If we didn't save yer ayass, you'd be speakin' German right now!"

I hope you were making a funny, Rhode Island Red.

You should look at map of education level per capita. Iraq is more educated than the midwest bible belt.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:49 PM on 04/14/2008

The Midwest is a big place. And not all of it is part of the bible belt. Yes there plenty of morons here. And there are plenty of morons on both coasts. I just think it's ignorant to cast such broad strokes about the entire population that doesn't reside on one of the coasts. And since I happen to live here, yes my pu$$y gets a little sore from being tossed in with the likes of Fred Phelps and such.

Heck...I even went to college and done got me one of dem new fangled master's degrees.

Maher says he is opposed to religion in politics. Then why can't this Zionist shill take on, for example, the rabbis who endorse the murder of Palestinian children.

Every person of Jewish origin is a "Zionist shill?" C'mon. That's Fox News Logic.

Besides, Maher comments on stories that are in the news which are, well, CURRENT.

Bill was brought up Catholic BTW

I think anyone who kneels to another expecting the word of God, should get what I would give them, a mouthful.

That logic comes up a lot.
I used the term "neo-con" on another site and was told to shut up because that was an anti-semitic term. WTF?

I like Bill and think he's usually right on. But I think he constantly undermines his credibility every time he talks about his two pet causes:

1. Atheism
2. Legalization of marijuana

I agree with him on both. But I think there are way more important causes to be agitating for and these two are just immediate taboos for many otherwise reasonable people.

That's a big 'otherwise' for those 'reasonable people'.

To hell with anyone who is upset by the thought that another person has the right to enjoy atheism or cannabis.

The marijuana "taboo" is the result of a disinfo campaign by the government, which wants to maintain control of the profits made from the sale of all illegal drugs. When the public finally realizes this, perceptions about cannabis will change.

I have a friend (conservative) I have known many years, but never talked to her about pot, as she wasn't a smoker. Yesterday I told her why cannabis should be decriminalized, and she was amazingly open to the ideas I presented, particularly the part about research into medical marijuana being thwarted by our government, when new studies show that cannabinoids and THC can kill cancer cells.

When people get all the info they can make informed decisions.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:22 PM on 04/14/2008

Yes. I watched the "History of Drugs" on the History channel too. It was excellent and informative. Unfortunately, Marijuana will NEVER be legalized until we make fundamental changes in our government.

I don't think you have to convince the American Public.k I believe I've seen studies that there is actually a majority of people in favor of decriminalization. I think you have to convince cowardly lawmakers who are too afraid to tackle the subject to strap a pair on and stand up for what is right.

Apparently, he disagrees with you about what is important (and funny).
Those issues matter to him and it's his show.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:24 PM on 04/14/2008

You misunderstand my point john. I think the guy is hilarious. I typically see eye to eye with him about "what's important."

And I agree with him that the religious right is a huge problem in this country and that marijuana should be legalized.

I just don't think you get anything done by insulting 90% of the country who happen to hold some sort of religious beliefs is constructive-- in any way shape or form. And the minute you start talking about legalizing drugs, you allow your opponents to paint you and everything you stand for as "fringe, left-wing, liberal crazy....whatever."

Just my 2 cents.

There are over one million people locked up in America's prisons for non-violent drug charges. Approximately half of them are Marijuana related crimes. The American tax payers foot the bill for the incarceration of those people to the tune of 40-50 thousand $$$ per person per year....
IMAGINE if we were to put that money into public education instead of locking pot smokers up like animals in cages????
maybe people like yourself would be a little better informed....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:31 PM on 04/14/2008

Tara,
Apparently you are slightly misinformed. I agree that incarcerating millions of people for drugs is counterproductive and ridiculous.

My point was that there are MORE IMPORTANT things to fight for than your right to smoke dope. Hey...I'm all for it...legalize crack for all I care. But I think a guy with a loudspeaker as big as Bill's has some responsibility to use it in the most effective manner possible and not allow people to write him off as some "lefty liberal looney" just because he advocates drugs and thinks anyone who goes to church is a f#@King moron.

Believe me. I am more than very well informed on issues facing our country. Maybe you should start thinking a little more strategically.

The threat from organized religion in this country and world are the cause of 90% of the violence on Earth so he's attacks on hypocritical organized religion is of paramount importance thse days.
And, I'm not sure if Bill Maher is an Athiest.
I've heard him say he believes in Jesus just not the organzied religions that profit from His name!
Has Bill ever claimed to be an athiest?
I've never heard or read that...

When you consider that upwards of 60% of the prison population in this nation are there for pot, you see that issue to is deceptively important considering the trillions we've poured down that black hole called Reagan's War on Drugs!

Keep up the good work Billy Boy!

Is there anyone more smug than Bill Maher out there on the left? I mean besides Al Gore. He preaches more than the Pope himself, Bob Costas even called him out the other week when Bill claimed he can never get sick because he eats right.

His 9/11 comments are the only thing I disagree with him about. 9/11 Truthers unfortunately run the gambit from people like myself think something is amiss when you see the put options on the two airlines involved and Morgan Stanley with 22 floors in the WTC days before the event to those who insist that the videos of the planes slamming into the buildings are only computer enhanced animations. I think he shouldn't close his mind to the whole question about 9/11 based on the most extreme accusations. But, we're getting off base here--he's spot on on the Catholic church and pedophilia.

You mean the absolutely right on comment he made the cowardice of America versus the bravery of the terrorists who flew into the Towers? When he said that we were cowards for launching missile from a good, safe distance and the men who flew the planes into the Towers were anything but cowards, he was dead on.

He didn't say they were RIGHT, but apparently, speaking an unpopular truth is enough to get you canned in a jingoist, neo-fascist society like ours is now.

For the record, the quote that got him canned? Right here:

"We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away," said Bill Maher, the host of Politically Incorrect. "That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly."

The reaction to that was as totally out of the realm of reason as the reaction to the Dixie Chicks saying in England, on the night of one of the largest Anti-war protests in that country, that "For the record, we're ashamed Bush is from Texas."

I'm way more smug than Mr. Maher.
Try this on for size:
New Rule:
If you still support AWOL Bush, War Deferments Cheney and their failed Eye-Raq War you have no choice...we're shipping you over to Iraq today!

We American are sick and tired of you yellow belly neo-cowards preaching about the need for the Oil War in Iraq while you're safe and sound state-side.
I mean come on BUSHIES...what could be smugger than supporting a war you don't have the spine to fight in?

The catholic church has no doubt a lot of questions to answer, but it has become as lame hitting on them as for fundamentalist christians to bash gays.

Even Bill Mahrer's audience is getting tired of it as can be judged by the public's very moot reaction.

Right, it's "lame," so let's completely ignore the issue. Good call.

His audience doesn't like to be confronted with that truth any more than the general population.
It's always the other guy's religion that's "wrong".
Especially when the other guy is only a handful of guys.

That being said, I guess there will be talk of restricting this sort of speech. What the hey, we seem to love giving up our rights. Might as well trash that one too.
