Think Progress:

In his New York Times column today, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol claimed that Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) now-infamous "bitter" remarks sound like Karl Marx's "famous statement about religion." On the Brian and the Judge radio show today, Fox News' senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano asked Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) if Obama is "a Marxist as Bill Kristol says might be the case?"

"I must say that's a good question," replied Lieberman, before stepping back to say that he would "hesitate to say he's a Marxist":

Joe Lieberman was anti-war when he was of military age. Yet, this guy wants to send everyone elses kids to fight in a war. Go figure.

That seems to be a defining characteristic the American right wing. You have to admit they have an effective plan. Trash the economy ehough so that the only way people can feed their families is to volunteer for the military. Then use your control of the media to trash the reputation of anyone who opposes these needless resource Wars. And be sure to bring up religion as much as possible, since that is even more mind-numbing to most people than appealing to patriotism. I am the least religious person you will ever meet, but I was raised catholic. Wasn't Jesus anti-war and in favor of helping the poor. George Orwell nailed it. All you have to do is lie loudly and often and you can get people to believe anything. Future Historians are going to look at this period of American history and shake their heads in dismay

YES YES YES YES - MY ANTIPATHY FOR THIS MAN KNOWS NO BOUNDS...

This man has always been a living definition of the DLC and the DINO. He has used the D vehicle as a way to conceal that he is really an R and a neocon R.

Actually, this man is also L for Likud - the right wing of Israeli politics. This man has never ever divorced his observant Orthodox Judaism from Zionism. I understand dual nationality. The question is always who gets the primary allegiance? With this man often dubbed "The Prime Minister of AIPAC" - my mind is clear...as the man he will endorse at the GOP Convention says "BOMB BOMB IRAN." It is Israel's wet dream.

birds of a feather flock together...obama spiritual mentor for the past 20 years the rev. wright is a socialist-marxist no question....obama needs to address where his core values lie....his actions over the years indicate they are not as they appear....

No one with any intelligence falls for that spiritual mentor crap

Trying desperately to prove guilt by association, eh? I imagine we'll be able to run some 527 ads of McCains ties to the many anti-semitic, anti catholic , pro theocracy crack pots that are associated with his campaign. The only reasosn Obama hasn't done this yet is because he has more class than the entire GOP at this point.

Where is your proof Rev. Wright is communist?

Is it because he's done more for other people in OUR country than you EVER will. Seems to me he's just following the words of Jesus, and much better than YOU.

Alot of posters seem to not understand Liberman's comment. There is a difference between Marxism and communism.

Yesterday I laughed, because I thought surely the poster was in the minority for misintepreting.

I can see that there are a lot of confused posters.

Marx is the person who said that "Religion is the opium of the masses."

Hence, his remark that people cling to religion because of economics and bitterness was Marxist in tone.

Wright expresses a great many of the Marxist ideology in his speeches. Hence, there is a question about the root attitudes of Obama.

We now have quite a few pieces of the puzzle regarding Obama, starting with Michelle's comment about not being proud of America until now, how America is "mean," Wright as a mentor, "typical white person," and now.......the big one: Bitter people cling to guns and religion and are racists.

Isn't it time we ask frank questions about his real attitudes?

Most Americans are like OkieMon. They wouldn't know a Marxist if one bit them on the ass. If you tell them Donald Duck is a Marxist they just have to take your word for it.

Good question to ask is Lieberman a spy?

It seems his loyalty is not to any US party.

It seems that he is most focused on issues that affect Israel.

Choose one: US or them

and this goes for all the imigrants. I'm sick of seeing your stupid flags in our country.
If you love that country so much. Move there.

We are trying to be americans and you are not.

We have no other allegence it appears you do.

Hmm.. So should people celebrate St Patrick day - it is Irish holiday? Should people talk about Italy being an "old country"?

Many immigrants went through hell for prevelage of living in this country, while all you did is be born here. So who are you to question our loyalties? We pay taxes, we vote and we have the same rights. This country was build by people like us...

A good question to ask is if Lieberman is a traitorous DINO warmonger who has lost his marbles.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:12 AM on 04/15/2008

Lieberman believes because he responded to the Marxist call when he was young and ducked Vietnam that Obama must be one too. But it was Lieberman who sided with Ho Chi Minh, Mao tse-tung, Leonid Breznev and General Giap, not Obama.

I thought the comments for this post would be a wonderful coming together of pro-Hillary and pro-Obama elements into a common disgust for Joe Lieberman...but I underestimated the hatred this site provokes.

I should have expected all the anti-semites would crawl out of the cowardly anonymous rocks they breed under. Though they're probably just Obamatons spewing more bile.

i have a good opinion of myself and a bad opinion of lieberman.

i qualify that bad opinion w my vote for him for veep in 2000 and small but earnest donations of my discretionary income to that slate....

Yes, it's not shocking to me, though. When Murtha endorsed Hillary, out came horrible ageist remarks. The sexism against Hillary is obvious. Now, anti-semitism because he made a valid comment.

ISM seems to be the connecting force of unity with Obama supporters. What is fascinating is that they seem to not recognize that they are the real "slash and burn" political group operating right now. Anyone or anything that dares challenge Obama is immediately bashed endlessly, and no brakes are put on in terms of how that's done. If an anti-semitic remark is made, so what? The guy deserved it, right?

It's appalling. But it explains fully why Obama supporters aren't embarassed that their candidate called small town Americans racists.

The leader sets the tone.

The same time Shrillary will stop lying and trying to steal a nomination for an office that I am better equipped to handle than she.
When will the Congress stop pandering to this lunatic & ask him to change parties?
I guess until the necessary evil of a slim majority is done.

Hillary makes me ashamed to be female.
Joementum makes me ashamed to be Jewish.
McInsane makes me ashamed to be human.

In January 2009, Lieberman will become an afterthought. He is actually a republican and he will be stripped of all important committee assignments, I would suggest making him a junior member of the Senate committee that hands out stamps to Senators. I realize this is far beyond his demonstrated abilities, but it would keep this clown occupied until CT comes to their senses and gets rid of this traitor out of the public trough (little piggy Lieberman).

Let's ask Lieberman if he is a champion for America OR Israel???????????????????

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:32 AM on 04/15/2008

To all of these comments that address Lieberman's religion, what the hell does that have to do with this article?

An Jewish American can't be a senator without his loyalty to America being quesitoned? Do you ask a catholic senator/gov/congressman if they are more loyal to the pope and the vatican?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:30 AM on 04/15/2008

If we sent Billions of dollars every year to the Vatican you might have some validity to your statement.

Also, how many of these people in high places have dual Vatican/American citizenship papers?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:56 AM on 04/15/2008

First of all, Americans send hundreds of millions of dollars to the vatican every year. Second, Americans send billions of dollars to Israel because Israel is an ally in a location that we dont have many other allies. Because Israel is a democracy (somewhat, moreso than any other country in that region), and also because the majority of Americans believe Israel has the right to exist, and recognizes that without US aid, it may not. I'm not going to defend Israel's policies, because many of them I do not agree with. But, it needs to be said that Jews are not the only ppl in this country who defend Israel. Evangelicals and other Christians find Israel at the top of their foreign policy priority lists.

And again, what does Joe Lieberman's religion have ANYTHING to do with this article... that is what my comment was addressing. The fact that ANY time lieberman is mentioned, anti-semetics and anti-israeli comments are posted. As a jewish american, or, an american jew, it scares and offends me.

well if their policies are consistently in line with the interests of that other country all the time.

Joe lieberman is constantly aware of what the US needs to be doing in the middle east.

Constantly trying to drag us into that bs.

I think both the JEWS and the MUSLIMS are to blame for the problems in the middle east.

The biggest example for why religion is idiotic.

GO to the supposed most religious place in the world and what do you find? War, killing of innocent people and children.

My point is that the United States is not responsible for Isreal.

We have our own problems and we don't need friends like Isreal who caint find a way to remain peaceful in their region.

Isreal's problems are not our problems. We are not a mearged country.

The vatican's problems are not our problems either. Even though they are not constantly at war like Isreal is.

I say if you want to fight go out side.

We are tired of the "baggage". We don't care about your points and reasons all we know is that you are constantly at war and Americans have to die for it?

That's crazy.

When Glen beck interviewed Keith Ellison, a Muslim, and newly elected representative from Minnesota, in November 2006, he said the following:
“And I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, "Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies."
And I know you're not. I'm not accusing you of being an enemy, but that's the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way.”
I wonder what public outcry there would have been if some talking head had asked Joe Lieberman if he could honestly represent the interests of America given his allegiance to Israel.
My concern is that the neocons and the Israel lobby having been using their influence to push the country to war in Iraq and now to attack Iran. How many wars are we going to be called upon to fight for Israel?
The issue is not Mr. Lieberman’s religion, but the implications for America of his policy agenda.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:53 AM on 04/15/2008

I agree wiht you 100%. As a jewish-american, I believe Israel has the right to exist... I, however, as i've said before, DO NOT AGREE WITH 100% of Israeli policies. I actualyl dont agree with 50% of their policies. I do not like the degree to which AIPAC has power over US policy in the Middle East. But, this article is about comments Lieberman made regarding Obama (comments that, i must say, were horribly misquoted by Huffpost), this has NOTHING to do with "the implications for America of his policy agenda."

And here's my point, as a jewish american, it bothers me that everytime an article about lieberman (or, even bloomberg, or other jewish politicians) appears on Huffpost, a flood of antisemetic, anti israel comments follow. And it leads me to go out and defend a guy like lieberman, who I wholeheartedly dislike as a politician.
