Lieberman: Good Question To Ask If Obama Is A Marxist

In his New York Times column today, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol claimed that Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) now-infamous "bitter" remarks sound like Karl Marx's "famous statement about religion." On the Brian and the Judge radio show today, Fox News' senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano asked Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) if Obama is "a Marxist as Bill Kristol says might be the case?"

"I must say that's a good question," replied Lieberman, before stepping back to say that he would "hesitate to say he's a Marxist":

Marxist principles [like Friedmanite free market capitalism] works well until you add people; neither takes into account how the inherent corruptibility of men causes these systems to become unbalanced. While I feel there is value in Marxism, it would need a balancing governmental structure to keep it in check, and I don't believe a working model of such has been imagined yet.

The same goes for Capitalism; the difference, IMO, is that a truly democratic republic does have the built-in means to balance the systems inequalities, but that also requires that the balancing regulation of the system be constant and flexible in nature, and not allow loose-cannon free-market morons like Friedman to run the system into the ground.

Totally agree! I have many Libertarian friends who are stumped when I throw in the Human Nature factor and history (unchecked Capitalism has always led to consolidation of wealth)

Why was the Keynes model scrapped? It kept us "in the black", created jobs, prosperity for the majority of players while encouraging entrepreneurial spirit.

The Neoliberals came in and said "We're going to drown if we don't reform it" but I feel it was the best system we ever had - Capitalism with checks and balances - it just needed tweaking. They scrapped the Keynes system and immediately crashed into an iceberg.

When is someone in Washington or media going to bring up the question of "Should this "Free Market" economic system be overhauled?" Not one public player has even suggested there is anything wrong with the system itself, they applaud the system and place blame on the individual "Bad Apples" that are a constant, systemic result of unchecked Capitalism.

Let's not leave Bill Kristol out of this. He's one of the principal architects of the Neo-Con policies that got us into Iraq in the first place. He should be run out of town on a rail and the fact that Lieberman lends a credibility to what Kristol says, speaks volumes.

There are pro-Israeli groups going up in DC now ("J-Street") that lobby for diplomacy and peace in Palestine-Israeli conflicts and they are setup to provide an alternative source of campaign support to that of AIPAC or other Israeli extremist groups.

Lieberman fits right in with the Zionist brigade. Norman Podhoretz, Marty Peretz, Bill Kristol, Fred Kagan, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith and a cast of thousands. The thing that gets overlooked is that they are not just trying to protect Israel, they want to expand Israel. Forget the Palenstinians. "Greater Israel" is a sort of manifest destiny that a branch of Judism in Israel that seeks to expand Israel farther and farther into the surrounding region. The peace deal with Egypt was a fluke that the hardliners likely regret to this day. Ariel Sharon was alleged to have welcomed casualties since it would ensure Israelis would support military action against their enemies. Then the spoils of war would be more land taken. Then they build more settlements and thus incur more violence which means more land taken for "Security." Lieberman should be censured, but AIPAC and the ADL stand ready to smite his enemies. This country is in so much trouble.
