WASHINGTON — Rupert Murdoch and Sam Zell, two media figures who led major newspaper acquisitions in recent months, are among four new members joining the board of directors of The Associated Press, it was announced Monday at the news cooperative's annual meeting.

In other results, four incumbent directors were re-elected to three-year terms. They are William Dean Singleton, who is vice chairman and chief executive officer of MediaNews Group and chairman of the AP board; Jon K. Rust, publisher of the Southeast Missourian and co-president of Rust Communications; Michael E. Reed, chief executive officer of GateHouse Media Inc., and Victor F. Ganzi, president and chief executive officer of Hearst Corp.

In addition to Murdoch and Zell, the new members are Donna J. Barrett, president and chief executive officer of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., and Craig A. Dubow, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gannett Co.

Barrett and Zell, who is chairman and chief executive officer of Tribune Co., were elected to three-year terms, while Dubow was elected to a one-year term to fill an unexpired vacancy.

Murdoch, chairman and chief executive officer of News Corp., was appointed by the board until the next election of directors to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Jay Smith, who announced earlier this month he was retiring as president of Cox Newspapers.

Also retiring from the AP board is Douglas H. McCorkindale, former chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gannett Co. Dennis FitzSimons, former chairman of Tribune Co., resigned from the board.

In other board action, H. Graham Woodlief, vice president of Media General Inc., was reappointed to a two-year term after his elected term expired. David Westin, president of ABC News, was reappointed to a three-year term, and Bruce Reese, president and chief executive officer of Bonneville International Corp., was reappointed to a one-year term.

Murdoch completed his acquisition of Dow Jones & Co. last December, adding The Wall Street Journal to his global media conglomerate.

The same month, Zell took control of Tribune Co. after leading a buyout that resulted in the publicly traded company becoming private. The company owns the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, nine other daily newspapers and 23 television stations.

The AP board has 18 directors elected by AP members at their annual meeting, in staggered groups of six each year. These directors are elected to three-year terms and are eligible to serve up to a total of nine years. The board can also appoint up to six additional directors if it chooses. These seats are sometimes filled by former elected directors who first joined the board to fill unexpired terms and end their elected service with one or two years of eligibility remaining.

Zell and Murdoch are the "twin towers" of how we got in the mess we're in. Which mess? ALL of 'em. There is no more free press....that's how the bushies were able to bankrupt us....morally spiritually and financially in just 8 short years. ........................................tm

Well, The Chicago Tribune was a few meager pages of yesterdays non-news this morning. Really pathetic so we're canceling. AP will be worthless in weeks if these clowns take over.

Zell has less media experience than I do. He seems to be a man of great humor but his credo is that the company must do anything to make money. No serious journalism or public service, just make money. A very sad day indeed..

The AP needs to strike a serious change because it has lost all credibility; I skip an "AP story" almost as fast as I do a "NYT Story."

Neither have any credibility whatsoever.

Certainly, Murdoch will bring some degree of accuracy with him, but my guess is that it will be "too little, too late."

So much for the Associated Press. They've already been losing credibility—reprinting false stories from Fox and from Drudge. I guess those were just practice runs for a full blown Murdoch future.

why isn't there antitrust legislation brought against NewsCorp? Oh wait, he paid off the politicos and is taking advantage of the relaxed restricitions on media/agit prop factories churning out lies and spin in print on the web and in the air.

Newscorp needs to be rendered into a NewsCorpse

Were they appointed to the Asssociated Press board or the American Propaganda board? Guess it doesn't matter they'll be one and the same now.

My copy of Zell's Chicago Tribune this morning was so thin I don't think I'll bother any more.

Nationa News, main section - 18 pages.
Metro - 6 pages. That's a sheet and a half of paper.
Business - 6
Tempo - 8.

Pathetic.

I cancelled my subscription to the LA Times after 35 years - its now a worthless rag.

Zell must have cut back on the staff in the circulation dept, however, because they are still delivering it.

No wonder they are losing money...

Murdoch and Zell. Can you think of two people you trust less (except for The Chimp, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc., etc.)?

For any news organization to invite these clowns to have a say in the dissemination of news is pathetic.

That sucking sound you hear is the US democracy going down the tubes.

I'm beyond disgusted.

Early on in 2009 we need to revitalize the anti-fascist 'Fairness Doctrine'

and install Keith Olbermann as it's Czar, letting KO go get equal time on

any broadcast he deems as unbalanced propaganda. Can you dig it??

Aww Geeze, what kinda one-sided Nazi nation are we aspiring to here if we can't have some really, really, really fascistic bastards controlling the news?

If you missed the name tie in, it's the KKK leadership title

mixed with the concept of ruthless people, being Lizards.

Mussolini claimed corporatism was apropos for fascism.
