WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

Payback's a b*tch or so they say. Let's see the Obama campaign and supporters consistently implied that Hillary Clinton is a racist....some like Jesse Jackson Jr openly lied about her, called her tears "fake", implied on she is a racist.
She had the nerve to say that LBJ helped us all in working toward MLK's dream. Now her comments were taken out of context, her meaning skewed. This is a woman who for decades worked on civil rights issues, and was embraced by the African American community. Suddenly she's turned into a racist. As far as I know Senator Obama's lifetime community organizing did not include rural folks. But that's OK. What he said was taken out of context PERHAPS and the Clinton campaign jumped on it. What goes around, comes around.
The hypocrisy on Huffington is amazing. The same bloggers trashing Clinton for "sliming Obama" were jumping on the "the Clintons are racists" bandwagon. Those people KNOW that is lie. Same thing with the MSM.....from Herbert to Cafferty, left to right, they KNOW the Clintons are not and never have been racists.
So maybe Obama is not an elitist. Maybe he is being trounced on. For him to say Clinton is using Rove tactics is hypocritical. His campaign follows Rove to the letter...HIT THEM IN THEIR STRENGTHS. One of Clinton's strengths was with the African American community. Axlerod's strategy was clear.....imply they are racists every chance they get. Rove couldn't have done it better.

Hillary has been using the dog whistle for quite some time now. As an African American woman she lost my vote many months ago. This has nothing to do with Barack and has everything to do with Hillary. Just this weekend, she showed me how classless she really is. It was unlady like for the Presidential nominee to show us how she can be one of boys in my opinion. I was taught whatever you do, be a lady.

You know checkbook, Obama's campaign has not passed an opportunity to attack
her. Obama has pretended he is above all this, but you can't seriously believe that act. As far as Hillary Clinton is concerned, if a she did not play hardball with the boys, she would be marginalized and not seen as being presidential. However, it is sad that we have such little respect for woman in this country that we have to make them get down in the dirt with the boys to prove they are capable.

Perhaps Hillary Clinton is not a racist---I suppose the jury is still out on that one. But --as she apparently sees it,--her one last chance to win the nomination is to convince people that there are a lot more closet racists than people think there are. (What else is that "unelectable" accusation about, if not that...when she has lower support than Obama does from everybody but old women)?

What she wants is people to ask themselves this something like this: "Well, I'm not a racists (at least I hope I'm not), but what if EVERYBODY else is...what if they go into the voting booth in November and realize only then that they can't vote for a black man?" And she wants people to answer their own question this way: "Geez....that doesn't seem AT ALL LIKELY , but WHAT IF IT HAPPENS? I had better vote for HIllary, at least people dislike her right out in the open."

That is what she is hoping for.

In other words, she is cynically hoping that people are more intolerant than even they themselves know, or worse, that they will begin to fear that other people are more intolerant.

She is willing to set civil rights back 50 years. She is disgusting.

Did Obama disparage hunters? Did I miss something?

I thought he was talking about gang members and criminals turning to guns.

Wasn't Hillary suppose to release some taxes today ? Can't remember if they were for the library or what. Of course they won't come out, she has her big debate tommorow. Don't want to be asked any questions about that.

Ok, things are looking up for the repubs. Hillary is hitting the booze. Barack is swearing he did not mean what he said [how refreshing]. And, Jimmy Carter has emerged just in time to remind us just what we will get with a democrat. All old John has to do is keep his mouth shut and watch the dems self destruct, as usual.

Yes, this website is turning a complete blind eye to all of the negatives that
Barack Obama has to offer. All of his supporters are doing the same, Who knows what is next to learn about Barack Obama. It's scary.

What " negatives" is becky speaking of? What exactly would you like to learn next? Why is it scary to you? What exactly are you saying but fear to say? How does becky know about " all of his supporters"? A little more thinking would help becky articulate her thoughts.

Think about it for a moment? A candidate just simply marginalized
a voter's ability to be objective and place into perspective the issues that
they personally are faced with in their everyday lives. To say people
cling to their guns, or religion, or seek to blame others for any of their misfortune
is an insult. Personally I would prefer if some Harvard grad living in a million dollar
home and having dinner with America's most elite would not purport to
understanding my plight in life, especially when he implies that it is impossible for
these same white people to understand the anger among African Americans.
Please Obama supporters stop trying to justify everything that comes out
of this man's mouth. You sound like the idiots he is playing you for!
Go Hillary, at least you have a long track record of trying to help the average American!

BeReasonable1,

That was awful. What a load of malarkey.

And try to be more specific next time. "A long track record of trying to help" really says nothing.

Cite some examples if your so confident of Hillary's record. Like her support and promotion of NAFTA. Is that what you meant?

I'm not talking about Bill Clinton's record but Hillary's " long record". Perhpas BeReasonable1 could be reasonable enough to respond with some details for us " idiots."

Obama's statement regarding middle America, blue collar types, the loss of their jobs, and subsequent embrace of anti-immigrant beliefs, intolerant religious views, paranoid attatchment to guns is spot on. Anyone with the least education knows it's true. For God's sake why are we pandering to the Jed Clampetts of this country?

Hilary, you wretched opportunist, you intellectual fraud, you know Obama statement is true as much as anyone. You have stated similiar sentiments in the past. Now you are offended by Obama's insight? Now you are a hunter? What a load of crap.

All we can expect from a Hilary presidency is more of the same of this phony say anything nonsense. Any reasonable person has to see that she is the ultimate poltical hack. For Gods sake let us have a breath of fresh air. The Clintons and Bush's of this nation, your time is over. Please do the honorable thing and recognize this and step aside.

I'm starting to think that Hillary Clinton feels if she can't be president, then she'd rather have John McCain as president instead. I'll bet she secretly supports the Iraq war and attacking Iran. Wow, attacking Iran, there's where the US will really gets it's ass kicked.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:52 PM on 04/15/2008

The last thing Hillary wants is for McCain to be president, but she does think that Obama doesn't have a chance in November against him. Obama said that Clinton may feel she cannot afford to be so constrained. Well an article on Politico called Clinton's campaign an exercise in self-restraint. If she could say what she really wanted to, there would probably be more strong rhetoric about his unelectableness, and problems with certain demographics, such as working class whites, hispanics, etc.

There was an article in The Washington Post yesterday titled
Big Donors Among Obama's Grass Roots. It is quite disturbing, but
should be read, especially by his supporters. Obama being the candidate
that is always accusing the others of taking big money is obviously just as
guilty, if not guiltier. Of course his defenders will look to say that Clinton also
takes money from big business, but try and be objective for a moment and realize that this is not my point. The point is, or what makes it worse for Obama, is how he consistently implies that he is against taking big money. After reading the article, you will certainly question the sincerity of his words, a question that is coming up far more often as of late. Personally I think he is a mistake and believe Hillary Clinton would be the far better choice, but no matter whom any of us support, after reading this
article you can be sure the Republicans will call him on it if he becomes the candidate. Then ask yourself who is really responsible for destroying the hope of getting a Democrat into the White House.

I am glad the Obama supporters on this site have decided on their own
that Hillary Clinton is not a viable candidate. That after 35 years of public
service, she should just walk away from politics and appease all the children
who blog here at Huffington Post. She should just give it away to Obama since he
has a small lead. (Florida? Michigan?) If she could only read all your provocative statements she would be so enlightened.
I bet your parents would be proud of how most of you have no respect for age, gender, or accomplishment. How you lack the ability to engage in intelligent conversation with those that oppose your views. God help the future of America. Good-night kids!

Hillary knows bitter when she sees it.

She is bitter that her long-planned "coronation" by the Democrats was derailed by Obama.

She should be bitter at herself for only having one game plan after Iowa. If she's so "ready on day one" why has her campaign been struggling so hard to find its footing? Its backup strategy was "hope Obama stumbles". The works well for the leader of the free world.

She and Bill also manage in the same way. They reward loyalty and don't punish incompetance. I don't want her to be president and have the squabbling between her staff to dominate the news...as it did with Bill. I don't want leaks from her staff dominating the news as it did with Bill.

They might be good politicians but they are both terrible people managers.

Hialry is only 6 points ahead of Obama. Hell he can make that up in no time. Did ya see how every body wants to shake his hand. That ought to tell the country who the people want.

At the college forum in PA the other night. Hilary walks in past several people and no one extends their hands to her. But they sure did Obama. They also listened to him talking, and they sure showed it. I never saw so much clapping.
Boy this had to have put Hilary in high gear.

Even the rabi said Obama told him what he wanted to hear. People from the audience even asked questions.

He explained Rev Wright, and BITTER PA folks. They accepted both with clapping..

They showed America who they really wanted. Otherwise they would have clapped on several of Clintons answers to. THEY DIDN'T.

This wacko article contradicts itself from one line to the next, saying first:

Followed by:

"'I think those comments are ELITIST,' he said.

And ending with:
