WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

Story continues below

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

No, she is not using the GOP playbook. If she was, then she would have used the following link and the information contained within:

The only reason she isn't bringing up Rezko, besides the fact there is no there there, is that hse has her own fund raisers in jail to deal with. Norman Hsu. It would be political suicide to bring up Rezko. If you want to compare, Hillary looks much worse than Obama.

Hilllary is writing all of the Republican attack ads for them. She is so phoney....anyone that can't see that is delusional. She panders to any group for votes. First she sends Bill to black churches, then she swears she's a hunter, then she is dodging sniper fire, then she is out having a beer ..just like a regular Joe in this case Jane. She tries to paint Obama with the elitist brush...when she is the one worth 109 million, and a priviledged upbringing. She is George Bush in a pantsuit. LIES LIES and more LIES

Clinton is not using the GOP playbook. If she was, then she would have mentioned the possible connection between Saddam Hussein-Nadhmi Auchi-Tony Rezko-Barack Obama. See the attached link:

In the rare event that no presidential candidate receives a majority of the electoral votes, then the President is chosen instead by the House of Representatives, from the top three presidential vote-getters in the Electoral College; each state delegation in Congress casts one vote.

Democrats are on target to screw up, in order, to keep Clinton quiet, let's let Hillary run in OH, NY, NJ, FL, MI, and in PA, if she wins in PA. Let Obama run everywhere else. And let's throw this thing into the House.
Where she can make the ultimate SuperDelegate argument.

“If he gets it into the House, a Democrat is going to win the presidency, because they have the votes pure and simple,” said Mario M. Cuomo, the former Democratic governor of New York, who is noncommittal on the presidential race at this point.

With all of this ridiculous infighting going on, Huffpost seems to have ignored John McCain stealing from the Democratic playbook. He gave a speech yesterday that attempts to co-op Democratic themes and ideas, uses harsh language about Wall Street fat cats, expresses compassion for the working poor, and disguises tax cut-based approaches as "compassionate conservatism." If he had said any of this stuff prior to securing the Repub nomination, they right wing would have buried him. While we are carving each other up and sounding like nit-picking jackasses (Thanks, Hillary.), he is carving out an undeserved portion of the middle.

As mediahack's post below demonstrates, and as the exerpt and link I post will show, the only people hammering the "offensive" meme, are those trying to boost Hillary's sagging approval rating and election poll numbers.

"SHENANDOAH, Pa. — Yes, some Democrats in Pennsylvania's Rust Belt communities were upset by Barack Obama's suggestion that voters there "cling to guns or religion" because of bitterness about their economic lot. But many more seem to think it was no big deal _ and if there's a problem it's with the political slapfest that has followed."

Yup. Or it's all about the pundits spending hours talking about it ... and then the pundits talking about how pundits talk about it ... and then, lastly, pundits talking about how pundits talk about how no one in such communities are even represented at the table.

Are you saying he "mis-spoke"? Surely not. If so, you Obama supporters would have to call him a liar like you did Hillary. You must come up with another word for he "didn't really mean it". If not, it was a "LIE".

He didn't lie or mispeak or say anything offensive. It's whacked out Clinton supporters and McCain supporters who are trying to convince people they should be offended.

Just when I think I've seen Hillary at her most shameless, a new day dawns and a new lie with it. Yesterday she and McCain used identical talking points to attack Obama, and today she accuses Obama of using the Republican playbook. Are people in PA really this dumb? This is getting better then the DC Improv.

call on all Hillary supporters to boycott posting here at HuffingtonPost. As you can witness, there is no critical thinking going on here, verified by both the headline and the juvenile "who can say the vilest thing about Hillary" posts. Let them play in their sandbox alone and given enough rope they will hang themselves, just like their UNELECTABLE savior is doing.

1.) Creative interpretation of news for eye-grabbing headlines has been a staple of reporting since the 19th century. At least.

2.)As you'll notice if you click the link, HuffPo didn't write the headline.
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5j3-Sfm2fVoTgNAyfOyvkIoc0a3DgD9020OI03
Perhaps a bit of research was in order before passing judgment.

3.) The animus began on this site when Hillary and Bill broke out the "kitchen sink" smear tactics plan, and their supporters posting here followed suit.
Until January of this year, things were fairly civil.

So yes, please Hillary supporters, if you can't post comments without using childishly derisive terms like "savior", "messiah", "cult", etc.., and making false claims about Obama's statements, actions, and character without backing them with proof, by all means, go.

LOL No critical thinking? At all?

So far no Clintonite has ever managed to convince me as to why I should support her. As an independent voter who was initially undecided, all I heard from people like you were reasons why I shouldn't vote for Obama. Not ONE single positive, affirmative, rationally-sound argument as to why she would make the better candidate.

And that's why I don't blame Obama supporters on here for saying such 'vile' things. Not ONCE have I read a defence of Clinton that was actually based upon the issues. No argument as to why a health care plan with a mandate would be superior; no argument as to why talking with Iran would be a bad idea; no argument as to why her style of management (as shown in her campaign) is noteworthy; no argument as to why her approach to Iraq would be better; and no argument as to how her handling of trade (i.e., NAFTA) is more economically sound. Ad infinitum ...

All I've heard from folks like you were endless references to Reverend Wright, incessant jabs at 'hope' and 'change', and now all this insipid talk about 'bitterness' and so-called 'elitism'.

And the fact that Clinton and her supporters did not even have the balls to defend Obama regarding the so-called 'Wright' issue was the tip of the iceberg for me. You all have abandoned any semblance of progressivism there may have been in your cold, rotting hearts.

In my head Clinton and Obama were running neck-and-neck for awhile. After all, their policy positions aren't all that far apart. But now that she's starting to do her Joe Lieberman impersonation on the stump my support for her is dropping like a rock. This Republican-style faux outrage because Obama spoke some obvious truths about the working class is especially disgusting.

I have followed Hillary's career for 35 years and I was surprised she had the nerve to run for
this election. Just check her voting record, CATO Institute claims she is a neocon, and she
has always voted on the GOP Side. Patriot Act twice, aren't you ashamed, she condones
torture by signing off on the Military Commission Act, wondering why bankruptcy laws are all
screwed up, thank Hillary. NAFTA, she was for it before she was against it, against unions
when she was on the board of directors of WalMart, signing the Kyl/Lieberman Act so Bush
can proceed and attack Iran this fall - good going there. Heck, why don't we just keep Bush?

What do you mean there's no critical thinking going on here? Mayhill Fowler criticizes Obama's words here, as do many others. And Hillary's words and ideas are obviously criticized here alot, so I think your objection is stupid.

Choosing the words "unelectable savior" shows YOUR lack of critical thinking. Do you have objective facts to back up your allegation that Barack is "unelectable"? What do you make of his lead in popular vote, delegate tally, and states?

You need to follow your own advice, and think this through in a more objective way. Your use of the word "savior" suggests you have some latent bias. Or do you have some "critical thinking" that you can point to which justifies the term?

The pundits on Cable TV News are eating their hats. The "clinging to guns and religion” remark wasn't supposed to make any difference, they said.
Check out CNN transcripts - Situation Room Friday night, when the story broke.
Wolf Blizter asks the best political team on TV what they think of the reaction to Barrick's comments:

BLITZER: All right. Jeff, what do you think?
TOOBIN: I think that is so ridiculous.
CAFFERTY: I agree.
TOOBIN: I mean that is not at all what Barack Obama said.
BORGER: Right.
TOOBIN: I mean I just think this is an example of how a campaign between the two of them can be purely destructive and not elevate either candidate. I mean Hillary Clinton is clearly distorting what Obama said. And, by the way, what Obama said is factually accurate.
CAFFERTY: Right.
TOOBIN: It's been true throughout history that people who have economic problems lash out against various others. I just think it is embarrassing for the Clinton campaign just to hang on to this as if its some sort of gaffe.

It's been a study in how Clinton followers will swallow any argument hook line and sinker.

Ironically, to CALL Obama's "bitter" comment elitist and condescending, is ITSELF elitst and condescending, since this would necessarily involve a denial that bitterness in fact existed.

The Clintons have painted themselves into a corner on this one. There's no way for them now to face PA voters who are less then enthused about the economy. If there's any bitterness at all out there, the Clintons have probably given them the feeling that they don't know or don't care that they are hurting financially.

I distinctly remember another political group that referred to members of the 'Democrat" party as "elitist" long before Hill & Bill adopted the term, it was the Republicans! The NAFTA-loving, DLC-supporting Clintons are using Republican verbal weaponry on Obama. It says alot about the Clintons.

i hope they carry that bitterness with them to the polls and REJECT republicans/clinton's outright attempt to insult their god-given intelligence.

Karl Rove’s advice to Obama :

In his infamous very open memo to Obama on how to beat Hillary of December 2, 2007, Rove gave Obama these hit points to pound Clinton:
"Be scrapping and fighting"
"Sharpen your attacks and make them more precise"
"focus on the fact that many Democrats have real doubts about Hillary"
"when you create controversies do not pick issues where you are playing the weaker hand"
"Taking her down a few notches is step one"
"find a way to gently belittle her blow the whistle on her when she tries to become a victim. Do it with humour and a smile and it will sting even more"
"She is beatable but you have to raise your game"
