WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

Story continues below

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

OBAMA 2008

On Keith's show last night he replayed comments by Hillary Clinton about her outrage over Obama's remarks.....the bitter ones. She was so outraged that she had to keep referring to her notes. I think THAT is a big story. She can't even be outraged without scripting it. I kept wondering why she had to look down at her notes if she was so outraged. Is she not capable of speaking her mind without looking at notes. This is evidence that this is a trumped up outrage. Someone should point this out to the public. She does it all the time, if she is so smart and articulate, why the notes on supposedly personal outrage?

It has to be scripted cause god forbid she screws up one word, then the media and Obama bots would be all over her.

What I find pretty sad is that Obama supporters can never admit when their messiah makes a mistake. They just deflect it and blame HRC. Even some of his surrogates have admited is was a mistake and at the very least a very poor choice of words and the wrong setting and company to say such. Republicans have been painting Dems as liberal elitest for the longest time, this doesn't help matters, at least have enough self respect to admit that.

Actually, if you knew what you were talking about, you'd already know that Obama DID say it was a poor choice of words.

Contrast that with Bush who once said,

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful - and so are we,"
"They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people - and neither do we.
George W. Bush August, ‘04

This quote has never been corrected, qualified or apologized for, not even by the WH Press Secretary, but Bush gets a pass from the media. Why is that? Is there some unwritten rule that expectations should be so low when Republicans speak, but super high when Democrats do? There are entire websites dedicated to things that Bush has said, but nobody in his own party would even dare to shove his own words down his throat. Where was the public outcry when he said things would be a lot easier if this was a dictatorship? Why wasn't he drawn and quartered in the streets and his head put on a pike when he called the Constitution "just a piece of paper" ?? !!! In a sane world, he'd have been fed every last word of those quotes with an ample portion of crow rammed down his throat.

Don't you think?

I will vote for any Democratic who is nominated, since McCain has just become to weird and out of touch to even contemplate. I listened to Mitt (venture capitalist) Romney betting the tom tom for the reinvented supply side McCain who now panders to the neo-conservative New Left, God fearing Republican base. Mitt declared that McCain’s newfound conservative values are based on cutting every corporate tax knows to man, shifting the cost to me, while growing the economy at the same time. I’ve heard this song before in the 80s and from the current Bush, and both men have been “barrow and spend” BS artist.

I am also disappointed with Clinton these days, because her silly attacks are not addressing the issues. My dad was a working class guy who grew up in a small PA mining town and would have not voted Republican if you put a gun to his head. He loved hunting and fishing, although collecting automatic weapons was not high on his list, his kids were. He used a 30-30 long gun and his fathers 12 gauge depending on the state he was hunting in. Obama’s comments may have been to nuanced for the nonsense that passes as politics and news today, I give people more far more credit. I grew up in the rural NY State and people up there are pretty fed up with 8 years of faith based neo-conservative rule. They feel under-represented and forgotten.

Next subject: Clinton uses republican talking points! Calling a liberal an elitist is a republican talking point. It has been since Reagan ran for president the first time. If Clinton supporters could get her to stop using republican talking points then she would be unbeatable. I used to love Hillary Clinton, I voted for her as my senator and have defended her for years. I had hoped she would have been president, she can do the job. However, I believe her campaign staff have truly screwed her over. They are the ones who took this once powerhouse candidate and turned her into a shrewish, republican-light, self-defeating also ran. My heart sinks when I think of what could have been. Now I turn to Obama and hope we can get along long enough to save this country - for us and our children, so we can take control and stop the bitter aftertaste of this current government.

LOL, and you think that the Republicans wouldn't be using this talking point, had not HRC said it? She said the comments were elitest and they were. You don't stereotype those who you don't understand. Hunters and faith based people are sick of being stereotyped and talked down to. You may have different views but that doesn't mean you're better or right.......

Holy crap! I've been reading as many comments about Obama's words about small town America. No one, not a single person, pro-Hillary nor pro-Obama, gets it!
Small town folks DO cling to guns, god and gay/black/mexican/arab/irish/oriental/etc. hate. When V-O-T-I-N-G! Check your history of American politics. When people feel that government can't help their situation they disbelieve the candidate who wants good government and will vote for the candidate who professes guns, god and hate.
That is called voting against your own self interest. Its why the union worker votes anti-unionist republican, the middle-class votes corporate republican, the family votes for the degenerate republican.
Who knows this simple truth? The republicans! You haven't been listening!
When people are bitter about government, they cling to guns, god, and hate. If they did not then the republicans would never get into office. A republican can not run on truth, if they had to run on their political philosophy, no one in small town America would vote for a republican ever again!

Exactly right! Why, oh why doesn't Obama come out and clarify his statements as you have here. More importantly, if you and I and a number of other people understand what he was trying to say why doesn't anyone in the media analyze it correctly??? God, guns, and fear has been the Replublican trump card since 1980 and now I guess it will be Hillary "Annie Oakley" Clinton's too.

Juan McCain is stupid for asking Obama to repudiate something Jimmy Carter said or did. That old man is at the height of senility. And I absolutely love how Clinton and McCain are already trying to swift boat Obama with the ‘elitist’ stigma, the same as they used on John Kerry. Do you think Obama isn’t ready and willing to show the Repugs how ignorant they are for trying to label one of the poorest politicians in Washington, and a black man at that, an elitist? Obama is just itching for a chance to have that debate with Juan McCain. I imagine they will drop this elitist crap soon enough as Obama gets to hammer away at how out of touch Juan is with working class Americans, hell he didn’t even want to help them with their mortgage situation until the polls showed he should probably rethink that stance. The Repugs are NOT READY for the Obama train. It ran over Hillary and it will easily run over Juan McCain, mark my words.

I have always admired you, and I have always felt we had something in common because of our dislike for the Republican Party platform, and other common ground. I have been looking forward to reading your book "On Becoming Fearless". I firmly believe you are a smart woman. With that said, I feel the reason you have chosen to put every single egg you have in Barack's basket is because of money, because of clicks on your site or some other reason that is in YOUR best interest and not the best interest of this country. It is clear that Hillary Clinton is the best candidate for president. What is also clear is that college students and people of greater means have more time to spend on the computer clicking on web sites and earning you money. You have turned off many people because
of your fully focused denigration of Hillary Clinton, and blind oblivious support for a candidate who does not merit the outrageous amount of positive attention he is receiving.

How exactly is it "clear that Hillary Clinton is the best candidate for President? By what measure?

- experience of being married to Bill?
- popular votes?
- pledged delegate count?
- states won?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:06 AM on 04/15/2008

Because she is strong, smart, and dedicated. Being married to Bill is as much of an issue as Obama being married to Michelle. Obama supporters are pushy, rude, and arrogant, I can just picture them blasting through doors and pushing past regular voters, little old ladies, Mom's & Dad's with kids in order to raise their hand for Barack at caucuses. This stellar campaign that Obama has waged is nothing more than how many obnoxious people he can find to plow over regular people.

What is so clear about Hillary Clinton being the best candidate. That is the problem, it isn't that Ariana is beholden to the views of her readers, it's that she doesn't feel Hillary is the best candidate....DUH, And for you to suggest otherwise is incredibly insulting! He doesn't merit positive attention!? If we can use their campaign blueprint as an indication of how they will lead this Country, Obama is the clear choice...it isn't even close (like the delegate count).

why Clinton is doing this: One could take a few pages right out of Al Gore's book "Assault on Reason"

page 25 - The single most surprising new element in America's national conversation is the prominence and intensity of constant fear. Moreover, there is an uncharacteristic and persistent confusion about the sources of such fear; we seem to be having unusual difficulty in distinguishing between illusory threats and legitimate ones.

page 48 - If dogma and blind faith rush in to fill the vacuum left by reason's departure, they allow for the exercise of new forms of power more arbitrary and less derived from the consent of the governed. In simple terms, when fear and anxiety play a larger role in our society, logic and reason play a diminished role in our collective decision making.

page 56 - Simplicity is always more appealing than complexity, and faith is always more comforting than doubt. Both religious faith and uncomplicated explanations of the world are even more highly valued at a time of great fear.

it might help to look at this in terms of the dynamic between certainty and uncertainty - that's the dynamic our dictator's handlers seem to have been using... fear is a subset of uncertainty and limits the discussion... psych profiles of extremists show they are driven by a need to avoid uncertainty, or need for certainty.

elitist-
politics social sciences belief in control by small group: the belief that government or control should be in the hands of a small group of privileged, wealthy, or intelligent people, or the active promotion of such a system

politics social sciences control by small group: government or control by a small, specially qualified or privileged group

Note how devoid Obama's comments were on how he was going to alleviate this problem of rural America and income stagnation and all.

He can't. Not when some of the nations richest billionaires just paid him $2300 a plate for him. It's not possible since much of what has driven people into this bitterness has greatly enriched the people who was eating in the room with him that day.

Obama is a fake. He's obviously an empty suit willing to be filled with corporate cash and people who vote for him are desperate and/or stupid. How we ended up with these two clowns is beyond me...
