WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

Once and for all.....Obama is being called out for HIS OWN WORDS.....that is not out of the GOP or Rove playbook. That is out of Politics 101; on page 1; paragraph 1; first sentence:

If you are going to run for an office you will be held accountable for the words that actually come out of your own mouth.

This is not some dirty trick. This is a guy who said something awful and if it was any other candidate, HuffPo wouldn't be making excuses for them, they would be hammering them night and day....so where is the fairness that HuffPo likes to talk about???

Where is the outrage at Obama???

what exactly was so awful about what Obama said? Do you not think that people are frustrated and bitter about the lack of action on behalf of their political representative?

I do not have antipathy towards people who are not like me and I do not cling to guns. This is an insulting comment towards the white working middle class.

He basically said that economics should trump religion and the 2nd amendment. God and guns only matter when you're poor.

Would it have been awful if HRC said that balck, blue collar workers were bitter and clinging to guns and religion and their antipathy to things different than they are and that was why she was having a difficult time getting black, blue collar workers to vote for a white woman named Hillary?

Of course it would have been awful and what Obama said was reprehensible.

You mean "bitterness"? It's largely coming from Hillary supporters. Maybe they could turn to guns and the Lord to deal with it?......

We, as consumer of what the media feed us, need to dig deeper if something seems not quite right.

Case in point - the Reverend Wright was quoting another person when one of his now famous rants was taped. Did the media bother to tell us that? NO!

When the Pope was talking about the "evils" of Islam a while back, he was repeating the quote of a Byzantine emperor with whom he DISAGREED! Did the media tell us that? NO!

Consumer beware.

Sure, and that door swings both ways. However, when the truth is thrown at her, it is considered an attack, or the media is biased, yada, yada, blah, blah. Now we are even seeing that HRC was for gun control before she was against it (right at this moment). Her own comments get her in trouble, but that's just media bias. I don't think so.

Also, I might add, I am a "working-class" American and I did not find anything wrong with what Obama said. Truth is, I found it very telling that he demonstrated a knowledge of working class people that was refreshing. Everyone that I know that saw the whole comment agrees. Where is the outrage at the media?

Sometimes I wish that Clinton and all her smears, lies, and twisted truths would go ahead and win this nomination. And that then the Republicans can rip her to shreds. May she reap what she has sown.

Hey, but I could be totally wrong. After all, America knows best, right? I mean who better to be President of the United States than someone who can't remember who Al-Qaeda is without the help of Senator Lieberman or someone who dodges imaginary bullets. Of course Obama is no saint but given the choices, it seems pretty clear he would make a far better president than Senator McCain or Senator Clinton. Oh, forgot: going to a top university is bad. Really really bad.

copied this response to george will's article in todays washington post. the commentor is right on:

woody21 wrote:
This is so pathetic I don't know whether to laugh or cry. First, it just makes me laugh how Americans try to denigrate someone who attended an Ivy League School by calling them elitist. So I guess all those people calling Obama an elitist don't want their children to attend Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, Brown or Harvard? You Americans truly are a funny lot. You keep going on about improving education and when someone is fortunate enough to get a good education you immediately tear them down as being out of touch. Talk about the 'Dumbing Down of America.' It's bad enough the world had to endure Ronald Reagan and two Bushes simply because Americans cared more about personality than policy. And now Hillary Clinton is swigging back Whiskey and Beer just to show the electorate what a good ol gal she is - hell, she's just like everyone else - give or take $100 million. Oh please, stop the presses, I think I'm starting to break out in corybantic laughter (whew, there's a big elitist word for you!). And now people from all over the world are rolling their eyes at the United States because someone finally comes along who speaks 'truth to power' and what does America do? It skewers him for being an elitist. Yea, those Elitist Community Organizers - they sure are a bunch of snobs!

Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Posted on Sun, Mar. 30, 2008

"Huge delays frustrate delegates at district conventions

“Despite the early drama, the convention appeared to go more smoothly than many other large conventions in North Texas. Most participants left by 6 p.m. after they caucused for their candidate.

A final tally had Obama with 108 delegates and Clinton with 84.

This report includes material from The Associated Press.”

Rodham has not beaten Obama in delegates on a single primary day – NOT ONE

1/3, 1/8, 1/19, 1/26, 2/5 (Tsunami Tuesday), 2/9, 2/10, 2/12, 3/4, 3/8, 3/11 -
The best she did was a tie on 1/8 – splitting a whopping 18 delegates down the middle. Every other day she just lost more ground. That’s what the data shows. He took the lead right out of the starting gate, and he’s been inching further ahead every day since then. With a couple of furlongs left, are people really expecting him to come up lame? She is so far behind, he can probably trot across the finish line.

This race is over. If you’re holding Obama to win, cash in your tickets. If you’ve got Rodham, tear them up and head for the parking lot.

Still babbling? To continue to entertain the notion that there's still a race for the Democratic nominee is babbling. Bringing the data to the people to help them make an informed decision is not babbling, it's making a sincere effort to move on and focus on the real race that must be won.

Obama vs. McNutty

The bottom line is that Obama made a racist comment. He was answering a question by an elite at this San fransico private event. The question was why are you having a hard time getting the white middle class working people's votes ? His answer was because they are bitter and cling to guns and religion and have antipathy towards people who are not like them. This is a racist comment towards a group of people. I guess I would fit in this group of white working middle class, but I do not have these feelings that he describes and that is not the reason why I am not voting for him. He was wrong for saying what he said.

Why is truth so difficult for some people?

George Bush was a genius for hiring Karl Rove who expertly exploited the very qualities that Barack Obama recently pointed out as being a detriment to his campaign. Hating gays and foreigners, loving their guns and far right religious views, and being perpetually angry toward anyone who looked like a Middle Easterner worked well to get Bush supporters to the polls. It doesn't work well for a man of hope.

Obama said that his choice of words may not have been perfect however the sentiment that people are frustrated and upset with the loss of their jobs, the economy are all factually correct. Of course there will be exception to this. However, to assume that small town people are not frustrated when their jobs are shipped outside of the country and their bills keep piling up is either being willfully ignorant, naive, or represents the mind of someone who is easily manipulated by mainstream propaganda.

Congratulations, you think precisely how the Republican Party and the Washington establishment wants you to think.

It's ridiculous to suggest that Obama, a man of deep faith, was denigrating people who find solace in religion in tough times, or that they find comfort in pass-times like hunting, a pass-time which he has praised as a healthy, wholesome activity that binds generations together.

And John McCain better be careful here. I saw a quote of him talking about how people in Iowa are upset about Mexicans moving into their towns. If Obama were playing the game like Clinton and McCain, he would say that McCain is calling small town Iowans a bunch of bigots.

This whole thing has me worried about the fate of this country. If people can be spun by the media as easily as Gizmo has been, if this is typical, we're in big trouble.

WTF? That could read:
"He also believes the country has already entered a recession."
"He also displayed his penchant for occasionally telling the truth, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession."
"He also displayed his penchant for occasionally removing his head from his ass, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession."

Obama already has 29 States to Rodham’s 12 (and one of those 12 was not even a State, but American Samoa where she took 2 delegates to Obama’s 1) with two ties in NH and MO respectively. That’s what the data shows.

So what does the race actually look like?

Pledged delegates – Obama, with over 150 more
States – Obama, with 18 more
Popular vote – Obama with 2+ million more
Number of days Rodham has led – Zero
Number of days Rodham has taken more delegates - Zero

I must ask the Rodham supporters, (the real ones, not the shills who come here) what is the basis for fantasizing about her winning? She has never led and has lost ground every single day that there’s been a primary or caucus. Every day! Is Pennsylvania some sort of magic State where if she wins that day everything that’s transpired up ‘til now is miraculously erased? If she takes PA, does that mean that suddenly she can catch up in States? Obama already has more than half. Does it mean she can catch up in popular votes? Obama already leads by more than two million. Does it mean she can ever win in pledged delegates? Obama leads by more than 150.

If not to destroy the next Democratic candidate for POTUS, what on earth is she still doing in the race?

Can any of you alleged Rodham supporters answer that question?

Please?

Then go ahead, because your post hasn't. It doesn't address the fact that his lead is insurmountable. You either remain in denial - or more likely, you're just a shill for the Republicans. If you don't like Obama now, then it's just buyers remorse, because the numbers don't lie. Like it or not, he's the next Democratic candidate for POTUS. Nothing you say can or will change that.

Hillary Clinton's killer blows could not be dealt without a complicit over the top main stream media.
Shame on all of them!

Does anyone familiar with Sen. Obama's life trajectory and policy positions truly believe he is an elitist or that he meant anything condescending in his remarks about the bitterness experienced by those living in forgotten and economically marginalized small towns? Come on, really.

Hillary Clinton is truly a Machiavellian figure who
is set on destroying the campaign of the best candidate the U.S. has had in many generations.

In front of our very eyes she could not have stooped any lower than she has during this race.

Are we going to allow her to rob us the unique opportunity to be led by someone of Senator Obama's character and stature? Do we not recognize greatness when we see it?

What a sorry spectacle Hillary and Bill Clinton have become. A runaway train...heading towards the inevitable collision. How sad.

It difficult not to feel morose and disillusioned.

You're right. My position is that it's completely ludicrous to suggest Obama, a black man, who comes from a people who are some of the most despised in America, and throughout the world - can be elitist. A U.S. Congressman from Kentucky (name?) was recently quoted calling Obama a "boy." This sentiment is pervasive. Bill Clinton has expressed it, Ferraro has expressed it, and as have countless media talking heads. The fact that Obama's every word is weighed by the media for any suggested "upityness" is a sign of the tenous social position he holds.
